Description
Patented Mar. 27, 1923.
ELCONE LUSTGARTEN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
CLOTHESLINE BUCKLE.
Application filed October 18, 1921. Serial No. 508,439.
To all who/m t may concern.'
Be it known that ELooNn LUsreAnrnN, citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, New Jersey, has invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothesline Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a grip device and has reference more particularly to a buckle used in connection with a clothes-line to conneet two ends of a rope or wire.
The object of this invention is to construct a device of this character which is inexpensive to manufacture and very effective in operation and which may be used in connection with either a straight ground line or with the common pulley lines now in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the gripped end of a rope maybe held tangentially to the axis of t-he remaining portion of the rope so as to be acted upon by a slidable gripping member movable axially of the said remaining portion of the rope.
The invention is illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the buckle showing a rope engaged.
F ig. 2 is a substantially longitudinal sectional view through the buckle.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the lines 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1() denotes the cylindrical body portion of the buckle at one end of which is a raised annular portion 11 provided with wing holders 12 disposed at diametrically opposite sides thereof. A rope 13 is threaded through an eye 14 which is provided in a rearwardly projecting portion 15 of the annular portion 11 and which is axially in line with the axis of the body 10. rlhe end of this rope 13 is knotted which is adapted to seat against the inner face of the projection 15. The body portion 1() is provided with an axial bore 16 extending therethrough, the lower wall of which isl parallel with the body axis and the upper wall of which is inclined upwardly from one end towards the face of the annular portion 11. In cross-section this bore 16 increases from a round opening at one end to an elongated ellipse at the opposite end. Mounted in parallel elongated openings 17 extending axially of the body portion 10 and substantially parallel with the bottom wall of the bore 16 is a gripping pin 18 projecting from opposite sides ot the body 10 and provided with upset outer ends 19.
In operation one end oit a rope is threaded through the bore 16 from the round end, thence over the pin 18 and thereafter drawn outwardly through the elliptical end a short distance. The opposite end of the rope 13 being secured in position as hereinbefore explained, may or may not be the same piece of rope extending through the bore 16, it depending upon the installation. However, in order to tighten the rope the fingers'ot one hand are hooked over the wing grips 12 and the end of the rope projecting from the bore 16 is drawn outwardly. In doing this the pin 18 releases its grip and allows the line to be pulled taut, whereupon the line is then released and moves backward slightly carrying the pin 18 until the space between the upper surface of the latter and the adjacent surface of the inclined wall of the bore 16 becomes suiliciently small to grip the strand of rope. It will be noted that any increased tension brought to bear upon the portion of the rope beyond the round end of the bore 16 will only tend to further increase the gripping action of the pin against the rope.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
I claim:
1. A grip buckle of the character described, comprising a cylindrical body portion provided with longitudinal parallel transverse openings in the wall thereof and a through axial bore to receive a portion o1 rope to be adjusted to the axis of the bore, one wall of the latter being' disposed at an inclination with respect to the longitudinal axes of said transverse openings, the body portion being further provided with an enlarged annular section having radially and oppositely disposed holder members, whereby the latter may be held by the fingers of one hand while the adjustable portion of the rope is being drawn through the bore by the other hand, and a pin supported in and movable longitudinally of said transverse openings and at an angle to one wall of said bore and against the said rope to grip or release the latter from engagement between the pin and the inclined wall of the said bore.
2. A grip buckle of the character described, comprising' acylindricalibody p01*'- tion provided with longitudinal parallel transverse openings in the Wall thereof and a through axial bore t0 receive a portion of rope to be adjusted to the aXis ofthe bore7 one Wall of the latter being disposed at an incline With respect tothe longitudinal axes of said transverse openings, the cylindrical body portion being :further 4provided ywith an angular projectionhaving an opening to receivea fixed end ofa rope, the y said opening being substantially aligned With the axis'of'the cylindrical body portion, and a. pin supported in and movable longitudinally of said transverse openings and at an angle to one Wall of said bore and against the said rope to grip or release the latter from engagement between the pin and the inclined Wall lof the said bore.
In testimony whereof, ELooNE LUsT GARTEN has signed his name Ato this specification7 this 7th day of October, 1921.
