LOCK;
Application filed `.Tune 26, 1922. Serial No. 570,779.
To all 107mm t may concer/li Be it known that l, Vrc'ron VVAizNnLo, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in locks, and has particular reference to a lock embodying a casing and a hinged shackle bolt supported thereon with a tensioned'lockingdogr engaging the keeper end of the shackle bolt for retaining the same in locked position relative to the casing.
The primary object of the invention rcsides in the provision of a lock having the peculiar releasing mechanism for the shackle bolt, the shackle bolt being released by a hingedly mounted bar simulatinga brace bar for the lock casing, said casing being provided with a key hole opening that does not enter into the operation of the shackle bolt.
lfVith the above general objects in view and others that' will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
ln the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a padlock constructed in accordance with the present invention showing the operating),r bar for the shackle bolt keeper shifted to its releasing dotted line position, t
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line Il--II of Fig. 3 showing the lock casing, the tensioned shackle bolt and the pivotally mounted tensioned keeper for the shackle bolt, the' shackle bolt and tensioned keeper being shown by dotted lines shifted to their releasing position,
`Figure 3 is an edge elevational view of the lock,
Figure i is a sectional view taken on line lV-IV of Fig. 1 showing the lug carried by the ope vating bar for releasing the shackle bolt keeper, and
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line V-V of Fig.` 1.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, there is illustrated a padlock embodying' a casing comprising a rear wall 1, `side and upper and lower end walls 2 and 3 respectively, the upper end wall being cut away as at i and 5 respectively `to accommodate the pivotal mounting of one end of the shackle bolt 6 and also providing an openingfor receiving,r the swinging end of said shacklebolt. A cover 7 is secured to the body casing by corner pins 8 shown more through' the cover and body of the lock as rshown in Fig. 5 and anchored by brace bars 9 arranged adjacent opposite endsv of the lock casinO.
clearly in Fig. 2, the corner pins extending The shzckle bolt 6 is pivotally mounted 12, the leg` 13 thereof carrying a keeper hook 14 for engagement with lthe hook 11 upon the adjacent swinging` end of the `shackle bolt 6, the other leg- 15 of' the bell crank keeper lever carrying a vdepending lug 16 for purposes presently to appear. A band spring bent into substantially V-shaped formation is disposed within the casing, the loop 17 thereof being' supported upon the pin 18, one leg 19 of said spring havingf the free end thereof extendingif into thebifurcated end of the shackle bolt 6, and engagin g the pin 20 for increasing tension thereof, the other leg 21 of said spring engagingir the adjacent rear face of the keeper lever leg 13 as shown in Fig. 2, moving the keeper lever upon its pivot pin 12, which movement is limited by the leg 13 engaging the pin 22.
A pivotally mounted bar 23 mounted upon the lock casing cover 7 adjacent one end thereof, in simulation of a brace bar 9 is pivoted adjacent the upper end thereof upon the pin 24 and carries a false retaining pin 25 in the lower swinging end thereof. T he casing' cover 7 is slotted as at 26, shown more clearly in Figi. 5, a finger 27 carried by the inner face of the pivoted bar 23 extending through said slot 26 for engagement with the depending lug or finger upon the lower leg 15 of the bell crank keeper lever. The
and the inner end 10 of said shackle lock casing cover 17 is provided with a'key hole opening 28 tending to confuse and in no 'manner effect an operation of the lock.
. Assuming that the shackle bolt Gis in the locked position shown in Fig. 1, and it being desired to release the same to permit shift;- ing'to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2, the pivoted bar 23 is' shifted to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1, causing the finger 27 carried thereby to engage the lug 1,6 upon the bell crank keeper lever to shift said lever upon its pivot pin 12 and release the keeper hook 14 from engagement with the hook 11 upon the free swinging end of said shackle bolt. `The outer end ofthe y spring arm 19 beingunder tension by engaging ,the pin 20, as shown in Fig. 2, said spring arm 19 engaging the bifurcated end 10 of the shackle bolt will shift the shackle bolt upon the pin 8 and cause the same to vmoveto the dotted line position, and when Y so disposed, and when pressure is relieved upon the pivoted bar 23, the spring armv 21 engaging the upper leg 13 of the keeper lever will restore the keeper lever to its set 'posi tion engaging the stop pin 22 and causing the ,lug 1G carried by the lower leg 15 to if" `shiftthe nger27 .and pivoted bar 23 to its ters into' the operation of said lock.
plicated nature, there being comparatively` few parts embodying'the operating mechanism thereof .andsuch partsbeingofa na-l ture 'that are not liable to damage.
lVhile there is'herein shown and described a the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing'from the Aspirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is :e
lIn a lock of the type described, va casing,
two pairsl off longitudinally extending bars carried by said casing, each pair beingpositioned Von opposite faces of the casing and adjacent the side walls thereof, one of the vbars carried by the front facev of said casing beingpivotally attached thereto, a shackle bolt having a bifurcated end pivoted within the casing and having a hook upon the other end adapted toenter the casing, a tensioned` keeper lever pivoted within theicasing engaging the hook end of the shacklebolt, and means for shifting the keeper lever to free the same from engagement with said shackle bolt hook, vsaid means comprising a finger 'carried by said l, pivoted bar extending through a slot provided 1n said casingand .engaging with said keeper lever for shifting thesame to free the hook end ofthe shackle bolt` the tensioned means foi-'said keeperlever embodying asubstantiallyV-shaped flat
