TALKING DOLL. FILED 0m. 2a. 1922.
IN VEN TOR 54172216] Haj/re]? A TTORNE Y SAMUEL HASKELL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
TALKING DOLL.
Application filed October 23; 1922. Serial 110. 596,365.
To aillwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL HAs'KELL, a citizen of Russia, residing at Brooklyn, Kings County, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Talking Dolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to talking dolls and in particular to one from which the sound will issue intermittently.
A particular object of the invention is toprovide a doll or toy figure with a mechanism which when set will operate continuously a voice member, the latter emitting at intervals in its rotary movement a word such as Mama.
Another object is to provide a mechanism Y which can be placed within thebody of the doll where it will be concealed.
Referring to'the drawings wherein one embodiment of my invention is illustrated;
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a doll partly in section showing the relative position of the operating mechanism and the voice member and; p
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. "L showing a front view of the mechanism and its associated member as seen in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, in which I have used a doll for illustration and do not wish to be limited to any particular figure, 10 denotes the doll which is preferably of hollow construction and is mounted upon a suitable base 11. Inside the doll and suspended in its mid-portion as by the bolts 12 is a frame 13 in which is held the spring 14 used in operating the driving gear 15 through a suitable reducing gear train denoted generallyby 16. The spring is wound through the turning movement of its shaft 17 which carries a small bevel pinion 18 which meshes with and is revolved by a similar pinion 19. The latter pinion is carried on the end of a key shaft 20 which extends obli uely rearward through the emit a sound which closely imitates that of indicates a conventional voice producing mechanism which is automatically operated by the sliding weight 29. Secured'on the opposite side of the member 23 and having its center diametrically opposite that of the pivot point of the arm 24 is a driven gear 25 which meshes with andis turned by the driving gear 15.- The ratio between the gears 25 and 15 allows of a slow even-turning movement of the latter which revolves the voice member 23 and causes it to emit at regular intervals a voice sound.
' In order that the sound may escape from the interior of the doll, I provide a perforated plate 26 which. maybe secured at any convenient point in the doll, preferably adjacent the voice member 23.
The doll or figure will be suitably covered with a garment 27 which will conceal the perforated plate 26 and thekey 21.
In combination with a toy figure, a voice member rotatable with respect to said figure and adapted to intermittently produce a word sound at a point in its rotation, a spring operated mechanism for revolving said voice member, means connecting said voice member and said mechanism whereby the formerv will be given a slow rotary movement and a governor for regulating the turning speed of said voice member.
2. In combination with a doll or like figure, a voice member rotatably mounted therein, said voice member being adapted to. emit a voice sound at a point in its rotation, a spring operated 'mechanism contained within said figure, means connecting said voice member and said mechanism whereby theformer will be given a slow rotary movement a frame in which said mechanism is retained, and means connected with the walls of said figure for maintaining said frame in position within said back ofthe do 1 and carries exteriorly therefi re. I 3. In combination with a hollow doll or like figure, a voice member within said figure said voice member being adapted to emit a voice sound at a point in its rotation, a spring driven mechanism contained within said figure and adjacent said voice member, a frame for said mechanism, an arm associated with said frame and adapted to pivotally support said voice member, and means connecting said voice member and said mechanism whereby the former will be given a slow rotary movement.
4. In combination with a hollow doll or like figure, a voice member within said figure, a spring driven mechanism contained within said figure and adjacent said voice member, a frame for said mechanism, an arm associated with said frame and adapted to pivotally support said voice member said voice member being adapted to emit a voice sound at a point in its rotation, and means connecting said voice member and said mechanism whereby the former will be given a slow rotary movement, said means comprising a driven gear fixed to said voice I member diametrically opposite its pivot 7 point and a driving gear operated by said mechanism.
5. In combination with a doll or like figure, a voice member rotatably mounted therein, said voice member being adapted to emit a voice sound at a point in its rotation, a spring operated mechanism contained within said figure, means connecting said voice member and said mechanism whereby the former will be given a slow rotary movement a frame in which said mechanism is retained, and means connected with the Walls of said figure for maintaining said'frame in positionwithin said figure,'-a spring winding shaft adapted to extend from said mechanism through the wall of said figure, and a key on said shaft exteriorly of said figure.
6. In combination with a doll or like figure a voice member rotatably mounted thereframe in position within said figure, and a' perforated plate fixed in the wall of the figure through which the voice sound may pass to the exterior of :aid figure.
7. In combination with a toy figure, a voice' member continuously rotatable in one direction and adapted to periodically produce a word sound at a point in its rotation, and means disposed within said figure for rotating the voice member.
8. In combination with a toy figure, a voice member continuously rotatable in one direction with respect to said toy figure, said voice member being adapted to periodically produce a word sound during its cycle of rotation, and means for rotating the voice member.
9. In combination with a toy figure, a rotatable-member, a voice member rotatable therewith and adapted to produce a Word sound at a point in its rotation, actuating means for said voice member, and meanssepar-ate from said actuating means for rotating said rotatable member.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
SAMUEL HASKELL.
