To all whom it'may concern Be it known that I, CLINTON WV. I'IOWE, a citizen of the United States and a resident of the city ofChicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Phonograph Driving Mechanism; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates more particularly to an improved type of phonograph driving mechanism wherein the top plate of the phonograph casing is provided with a plurality of brackets integrally formed thereon to permit the various operating parts of the device to be mounted in place permitting independent removal when necessary, of the encased motor, the encased governor mechanism, and the transmitting mechanisms, connecting the motor with the governor. N0 claims are made to the conventional type of the motor gearing disclosed.
Objects.
It is an object of the invention to provide a phonograph driving mechanism. wherein the motor and governor are in dependently removable.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a phonograph driving mechanism with an encased independently removable governor mechanism, the axis of which is disposed at right angles to the axis of the phonograph motor.
A further object of the invention is the construction of a phonograph mechanism wherein atop plate is provided with integral mechanism supporting brackets to form a one piece support for the phonograph operating parts.
Another object of this invention is the construction of a phonograph driving mechanism wherein the motor is independently removable.
It is a further object of the invention to construct a phonograph drivingdevice having the various shafts independently removable.
"It is furthermore an object of the invention to provide a phonograph driving mech anism with a spring pawl having the spring members thereof frictionally engaged on opposite sides of a ratchet wheel to permit control of the direction of rotation of the winding shaft.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a phonograph driving device of simple and effective construction wherein the motor mechanism, the encased governor mechanism and the connecting shaft between said mechanisms are all independently removable from the supporting brackets of a one piece supporting plate.
Other and further important objects of this inventionwill be apparent from the disclosure in the s eoification and drawings.

Description.
The reference numeral 1, indicates a phonograph top or mounting plate, having integrally formed on the'bottom or under surface thereof a plurality of supportinglugs or brackets to form a'one piece metal sup- Lil l thereof.
port for the operating parts of the device. Tntegrally formed at right angles on one end of the top plate 1, is a wide arm or bracket plate 2, longer at one side and provided with an aperture. The shorter side of the bracket 2, is also provided with an opening which is disposed in alignment with an opening formed in a downwardly projecting bracket or arm 3, integrally formed on the under surface of the top plate 1, opposite the short portion of the bracket plate 2.
The brackets 2 and 3 are adapted to rotatably receive the inner end portion of a crank or motor winding shaft 4. A gear 5, is secured on the crank shaft 4, adjacent the inner surface of the bracket 2. Keyed or otherwise secured on the crank shaft 4, to the outside of the bracket 2, is a ratchet wheel 6. A pivot pin 7, is secured to. the bracket 2, above the crank shaft 4, and pivotally mounted on said pin 7, is the upper end of a pawl 8, disposed in the plane of the ratchet wheel to engage the teeth A pair of curved strap springs 9, have the upper ends thereof secured on opposite sides of the pawl 8, by rivets 10, or other means, and the lower ends of said springs 9, extend beyond the lower end of said pawl, and frictionally engage the opposite surfaces of the ratchet-wheel 6.
Integrally formed on the under surface of the top plate 1, and directly opposite the long portion of the bracket 2, is an apertured arm or bracket 11, the aperture of which is aligned with the openings in the lower portion of the bracket 2, to permit a motor supporting shaft 12, to be removably supported by said brackets 2 and 11. To removably hold the motor supporting shaft 12, locked in position, a retaining or set screw 13, is threaded through the lower end of the bracket 11, to engage against the shaft 12. Mounted on the shaft 12, is the sleeve 14, of an encased spring motor 15, having a large worm-wheel 16, secured adjacent one side thereof to rotate therewith. Rotatably mounted on the motor sleeve 14, is a gear sleeve 17, which projects-into themotor and has the inner end of the motor spring secured thereto to permit winding of the motor. The outer end of the motor spring is secured to the motor casing. Secured on the outer end of the sleeve 14, between the motor and the bracket 2, is a gear 18, which meshes with the winding gear 5, to permit winding of the motor., As clearly shown in Figure ,7, the motor mechanism is independently removable by simply releasing the set screw 13, from its engagement with the shaft .12, thereby permitting said shaft and and the motor to be removed from the supporting brackets 2 and,11.
Integrally formed on the under surface of the top plate 1;..and atright angles to the motor brackets 2 and 11, are two parallel oppositely disposed governor supporting arms or brackets 19 and 20, each provided with a passage in which is removably engaged a longitudinally passaged journal sleeve 21, closed at the outer end. A retaining or setscrew 22, is threaded upwardly in the lower end of each of the brackets 19 and 20', to engage and hold the respective journal sleeves 21, locked in position. Each journal sleeve 21, has a bearing ball 23, seated therein, against which the reduced ends 24, of a governor shaft 25, are adapted to bear. The governor shaft is disposed at right angles to the motor supporting shaft 12. Formed on one end portion of the governor shaft 25, is a worm 26. The governor comprises a collar 27, rigidly secured on the governor shaft 25, to the inside of the worm 26. Slidably mounted on the governor shaft 25, is a sleeve 28, the outer end of which is enlarged to form a collar or head 29. Attached to the collars 27 and 29, to connect the same, are a plurality of leaf-springs 30, each carrying a weight 31. Integrally formed on the inner end of the sleeve 28, is a governor casing section embracing a friction disk 32, and an integral flange or rim 33. The friction disk 32, which forms one end wall of the governor casing is provided with a plurality of radial slots 34, through which the governor leaf-springs 30, project. The second half of the governor casing comprises a flange or rim portion 35, which interfits with the casing flange 33, and is removably secured thereto by screws 36, or other suitable means. The outer end of the second half of the governor casing is closed by means of an outwardly tapering or conical hood 37, which is integral with the flange portion 35, and has the reduced; outer end secured to the sleeve collar 29. It will thus be seen, by referring to Figure 6, that the governor weights are enclosed by the casing which. is slidable with the governor sleeve 28, when the governor weights ar moved Inn outwardly away from the shaft 25, by cen trifugal force.
Integrally formed on the bottom surfaceof the top plate 1, is a bracket 38, the lower end of which is bent to form an arm, 39, disposed parallel to the plate 1., The bracket arm is provided with anaXial passage be mounted thereon. The lower portion of the shaft 42, has a worm 43, integrally formed thereon, which meshes with the large worm-wheel 16. A worm-gear 44, is
secured on the shaft 42, above the worm 43, and said worm-gear 44, meshes with'a worm-gear 45, disposed at right angles thereto and mounted upon a connecting shaft 46. The connecting shaft 46, has the ends thereof reduced to permit one end of the shaft to be supported in a passage formed in a bracket arm 47, integrally formed on one side of the bracket 38. A bearing ball 48, is seated in the passage of the bracket arm 47, to permit one end of the shaft 46, to rest thereagainst. The other reduced end of the shaft 46, is j ournalled in a journal sleeve 49, against a bearing ball 50. The journal sleeve 49, is removably engaged in a passage formed in the lower end i of an arm or bracket 51, which is integrally formed on the top plate 1. A retaining or set screw 52, is used to hold the journal sleeve 49, removably locked in place. Also formed or secured on the shaft 46, near the bracket arm 49, isa larger worm-gear 53, which is in mesh with the governor worm 26. The shaft 46, together with the wormgears 45 and 53, is independently removable when the set screw 52, is loosened.
A passaged bracket 54, is integrally formed on the bottom of the top plate 1, and projecting through said bracket is a brake rod 55, the inner end 56, of which has a friction brake shoe 57 secured thereon adjacent the governor friction disc 32. Secured on the brake rod 55, is a collar 58, having integral arms 59. To hold the brake shoe 57, out of frictional engagement with the governor friction disc 32, when the phonograph is playing, a coiled spring 60, is seated against the inner surface of the phonograph plate 1. The lower end of the coiled spring 60, is engaged against one of the arms 59, of the collar 58.
Operation.
lVith the parts assembled as shown and described, the motor is adapted to be wound by turning the crank shaft 4, by means of a suitable crank handle adapted to be attached thereto. Rotation of the crank shaft 4, is permitted in one direction only due to the pawl and ratchet mechanism shown in Figure 9. The ratchet-wheel 6, is rotatable with the crank shaft 4, and the teeth thereof act to force the pawl 8, outwardly therefrom. The pawl springs 9, frictionally engage the opposite sides of the ratchetwheel, and serve to hold the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel when the motor is being wound. After the motor has been suliiciently wound the motor spring acts to reverse the rotation of the ratchet-wheel (i. This reverse rotation acts to frictionally draw the pawl springs inwardly toward the crank-shaft 4, thereby simultaneously moving the toothed end of the pawl 8, into looking engagement with one of the ratchetwheel teeth to lock the motor sleeve 17, against a reverse rotation.

Operation of the governor causes the weights 31, to be moved outwardly by centrifugal force, thus causing the governor casing to slidably move toward the collar 27. The governor springs 30, are permitted to move in the slots 34, of the friction disc 32, forming a part of the governor casing. The governor casing serves to muffle the noise produced by the governor when it is in operation.
Particular attention is called to the construction of the one piece support for the various mechanisms comprising the phonograph driving device. All of the supporting brackets are integral with the top plate 1. The motor mechanism, the encased governor mechanism disposed at right angles thereto, and the connecting shaft mechanism are all independently removable, to facilitate replacement of parts or the making of necessary repairs. The various shaft supported mechanisms are removable by simply releasing the set screw-s which hold the same in proper operating positions.
I am aware that various details of con struction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
Claims.
1. In a phonograph driving device, a onepiece support, a motor mounted on a shaft, a turn-table driving shaft geared to the first shaft, an auxiliary intermediate driving shaft geared to the turn-table shaft, and a governor mounted on a shaft geared to the intermediate shaft, all of said shafts having demountable hearings in the support, whereby any shaft can be independently removed.
2.
