To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosnrH H. PrrscHMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco, county of San Fran cisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Headlight Shield, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in general to headlights and more particularlyto shields for automobile and the like headlights to prevent the glare or'dinarily confronting the drivers of vehicles approaching one an-' other'at night on highways and streets.
The primary object of my invention is to produce a simple,' chea-p and practical device which may be conveniently installed withinthe conventional headlight and with the same presented in front of the light bulb in such a manner as to cut out all possibilities of glarejannoyance, without sacrificing any of the light rays so far as concerns an adequate illumination of the highway or street within an area suflicient for all driv ing requirements.-
I have shown a practical embodiment of the invention in the accompanying'drawing bulb; Figure 8 is a detail view in cross section of the same visor. and Figure 9 is a detail view of one of the screws used in the combination.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, A represents the headlight within which the shield is. supported in front ofthe light bulb B. The shield comprises a detachable bracket (5) fixed to the headlight as at (6) and having a key hole slot (7) in its face made to receive a screw (8), which in turn has a square cornered cut (9) adjacent its head (10) so that it will not turn in the slot mentioned. The face of the bracket around the key hole slot (7) is roughened or serrated and made to contact with a similar surface on the face of a bracket clip 11). The bracket clip (11) has an opening in one plane to receive the screw (8) so that it may be clamped to the bracket (5), and with a nut or the like (12) and a lock washer (13) holding the two together with'a limited adjustment obtained by rotating the bracket clip (11) relativelyof the bracket (5). The bracket clip has an elongated key-hole slot (14) made to receive a similar screw identified as (8) and the oblong face of the bracket clip (see Figure ti) is adapted to support the visor (15). Bracket clip' (11) will be so adjusted relative to the bracket (5) as to support the visor (15) in a horizontal angularwplane above the light bulb The visor (15) is divided as'at-(l6) with'tongue pieces (17) on one part made to slip under the straps (18) on the other part so that the meeting be made in one piece if so desired- The two parts of the visor are slotted as at (19) to receive the screw carried in the slot (14) of the bracket clip (11) so as to mount the visor to the said clip. 'If desired, the visor may be made with eyes or slots (20) to project a limited light ray but with the eyes so formed as to direct the rays downwardly.
The visor is made to block ofi? all light rays:
from the top part of the headlight and to a'fl'ect a close fit between the visor and the reflector of the headlight. A short apron (21) of felt, leather or any other kind of material may be fixed in a suitable manner to the curved perimeter as shown.
The screw which forms a medium for mounting the visor (15) is made to receive a wing nut or the like (22) with a washer (23) under the same. Fixed to the visor (15) and presented downwardly in a plane perpendicular to the horizontal axis of the light bulb is a second visor (2%), the same being so shaped as to intersect the light rays emanating from the headlight, in a planeparallel to the horizontal axis of the light bulb, or in other words, the light rays are practically cut off except those that are projected outside of the area blocked by the two visors. The visor (2 1) is made with a bifurcated tongue (25) adapted to straddle the screw presented through the opening (19) of the visor (15) and with the wing nut (22) and the washer (23) clamping the tongue to the visor (15). Thematerial of the visor is split so as to leave a flange (26) on each side of the tongue (25) so that while the tongue is presented on top of the visor (15) the flanges (26) are inserted under the same. This will make a relatively rigid connection for the visor (24) and prevent the same from tilting.
From the above it will be readily seen that my device will block all light rays which would ordinarily interfere with the vision of the driver of an approaching ve hicle and at the same time enable a sufficient illumination of the highway or street for all driving requirements.
I do not confine myself-to the details of construction shown in the drawing since various obvious changes may be made with out departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the subjoined claims.
I claim 1. In aheadlight, the combination of a shield comprising a. pair of visors supported within the headlight in front of the light bulb, one of said visors supported vertically of the axis of the light bulb and the other visor supported in horizontal angular relation relatively of the light bulb axis, the first named visor being adjustable to and from the light bulb, and the second named visor being adjustable in a horizontal angular plane relatively of the light bulb and comprising a divided arcuate shaped sheet with the divided meeting edges overlapping, and means for holding a longitudinal ad justment of the sheet.
2. In a headlight, a shield adapted to be fixed within the headlight in front of the light bulb thereof and comprising a detachable bracket, a key hole slot in said bracket, a screw in said slot having a square cornered cut adjacent the head thereof, a bracket clip having an opening in one plane to receive said screw and a key hole slot, in another plane, a screw in said last named key hole slot, said last named screw also havinga square cornered slot adjacent the head thereof, a visor having a slot made to receive the last named screw to adjustably fix the visor to the bracket clip at an angle to the horizontal axis of the light bulb, and
a second visor adjustably fixed to the first named visor and supported vertically of the bulb;
