ANGLE-IRDN-BENDING MACHINE.
Application filed January 25, 1921. Serial No. 439,759;
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST G. SLA'rnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Angle-Tron- Bending Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an angle iron bending machine for bending the ends of angle irons so that they will engage other structural members.
Referring to the annexed drawing in which my invention is illustrated and which forms a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of my invention with the upper press removed.
Figure 3 is a cross section of my invention taken on line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a side view of an angle iron bent by my bending machine.
In the drawing 1 indicates a base on which is mounted a block 2, an upper hydraulic press 3, a side hydraulic press 4, and an end hydraulic bending vise 5. The press 4 includes a hydraulic cylinder 6, a piston 7 operable in said cylinder and a press block 8 secured on the outer end of said piston opposite the block 2 and slidable on the base 1 with its left end against a slide 9 secured to the base. The right end 10 of press block 8 extends at an angle. The vise 5 includes a hydraulic cylinder 11, a piston 12 operable in said cylinder, a triangular jaw 13 secured to the outer end of said piston, a jaw 14, a hydraulic cylinder located. in jaw 13 and a piston .16 operable in said cylinder and extending from the gripping face of jaw 13 into the jaw 14 and secured therein. The cylinder 11 and piston 12 are arranged at an angle of 45 degrees to the cylinder 6 and piston 7 while the cylinder 15 and piston 16 are arranged parallel to the cylinder 6 and piston 7. The jaw 13 is slidable on the base 1 with one side 17 adjacent the end 10 of press block 8 and has a horizontal wall 18 extending from its lower inner edge under the jaw 14 forming a bearing on which said block slides, the left end of said jaw being located adjacent the right end of block 2. A vertical wall 18 is secured to the base 1 at the rear of block 2 and jaw 14 and has an undercut 19 on its inner side to receive the edge of wall 18. An angle iron 20 is secured to the base 1 adjacent the left end of block 2. The press 3 includes a standard 21, a vertical hydraulic cylinder 22, a piston 23 operable in said cylinder and a press plate 24 secured to the lower end of said piston directly over the blocks 2 and 8, and the jaws 13 and 14.
Tubes 25 and 26 lead into the respective ends of cylinder 6 and connect to a double gauge valve 27 to which is connected water supply pipe 28 and 29 which lead from a source of water under pressure (not shown). Pipes 30 and 31 lead from a double gauge valve 32 into the ends respectively of the cylinder 11; said valve being connected to pipes 33 and 34 which connect to a source of water under pressure (not shown). A pipe 35 leads from a source of water under pressure (not shown) into the cylinder 15 and a valve 36 controls said pipe. Pipes 37 and 38 lead respectively into the ends of cylinder 22 and connect to a double gauge valve 39 which is connected to a pipe 40 leadin from a source of water under pressure not shown).
The angle iron 41 is placed in the machine with its vertical flange resting between the blocks 2 and 8 and the jaws 13 and 14 and its horizontal flange resting on top of the block 2 and jaw 14. The block 8 is moved toward block 2 by hydraulic pressure in the cylinder 6 until the vertical flange of the angle iron 41 is firmly gripped by the blocks 2 and 8. The press block 24 is then moved down upon the upper horizontal flange of the angle iron 41 by hydraulic pressure in cylinder 22 until said flange is firmly gripped by said block and the block 2 and jaw 14. The jaw 14 is then moved toward jaw 13 by piston 16 under hydraulic pressure in cylinder 15 until the end of the vertical flange of the angle iron 41 is gripped by the jaws 13 and 14. The jaws 13 and 14 are then moved by hydraulic pressure in cylinder 11 toward the right end of press block 2 on an angle of 45 degrees with relation to the main portion of the angle iron held by blocks 2 and 8, and the end of the angle iron is bent until it is ofiset to one side as shown in Fig. 4, the bend in the angle iron being bent against the right end of the block'2 at right angles to the main portion and the olfset end of the angle iron.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. An angle iron bending machine including a pair of blocks, means for moving one block toward another to grip the vertical flange of the main portion of the angle iron, another block, means for moving said latter block upon the horizontal flange of the main portion of the angle iron to grip the same against one of said pair of blocks, and means for gripping one end of the angle iron and bendingit until it is offset from the main portion of the angle iron.
2. An angle iron bending machine including means for gripping the main portion of the angle iron, and means for gripping the" end of said angle iron and moving at an angle or" 45 degrees to the main portion of the angle iron to bend the end until it is offset with relation to said main portioni 3. An angle iron bending machine including a stationary blocln a movable block, means for moving said movable block toward said stationary block to cause said blocks to grip the main portion of an angle iron, one end of said movable block extending at an angle of substantially 45 degrees, a vise including a triangular jaw one side of which slides against the angular end of said movable block a second jaw, means for drawing said second jaw toward said tri-- angular jaw to grip the end of the angle iron, and means for moving the jaws of" the vise 45 degrees toward said stationary jaw to bend the end'of the angle iron until offset from the main portion of the angle iron.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. I
ERNEST G; SLATEN.
