Be it known that I, JOHN S. Kenna, a citizen-of Czechoslovakia, residing in the city and county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Device for Treating the Ear, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a method and means for treating the ear, and has for its object the cure of deafness, of ear-ache, and

other diseases and aii'ections of the car.

A further object of this invention is to cure abscess of the ear, and to remove hardened ear-wax and foreign substances from th ctr, and to give relief from gatherings in the ear.

Heretofore in the. treatment of diseases of the ear, the method usuall employed by physician, is to insert pro ing implements in the ear, thereby causing discomfort and annoyance to the person operated upon, and in some cases, causing injury to the ear passage by the pressure from the probe and other instruments.

I avoid all these objections in the treatment of the ear, by the use of my improved device and the method of using the same.

The device illustrated herein and embodying my invention is quick to manipulate, simple to construct. and is well adapted to serve the purposes for which it is intended.

In the drawings: Figure 1 isa perspective view of my improve-ddevice for treatment of the car. Fig.2 is a perspective view showing the device applied. to the ear and in use.

Referring to the drawings, my device for treating the ear consists of a hollow cone 11, having a bod 12 open at each end, and made preferably 02 a light but closely woven cloth fabric 13, coated with wax 14. The wax is medicated, and may contain any preferred substances which would be of benefit in treating the ear. The small end 15, is of a size allowing the same to be inserted in the ear a suilicient depth so that the air within the cone cannot escape therefrom, after the device has been applied for use.

In constructing this device, I use a light weight cloth fabric having a close weave, so that the air when heated within the cone cannot readily escape therefrom. This cloth fabric is wrap ed in one or more layers to form a cone. he cloth is very lightly irnpre nated with a wax substance, preferably candle wan, to which has been added the ensures, cannons-m.

medicinal agents desired. The cone, after being formed, is then given an additional and very thin coat of the war.

In my improved method for treating the ear, I first place in the ear a small quantity of pure olive oil which may be left in the ear for a short time, and serving to soften the ear-wax, or any similar substance, but in many cases the irrigation of the ear with the olive oil may be dispensed with if desired. The next step in tr atrnent of the ear consists in inserting the cone within the ear, and then lighting the outer end of the cone. and allowing the same to burn to within two inches of the ear. The burning wax creates a medicated smoke within the cone, and this lis driven into the ear, and, in connection with the heat generated by the combustion of the wax, e ear-wax and other substances within the ear, will be drawn into the small end of the cone. At the normal rate of'conr bustion of the wax, the'same will require about ten minutes to reach to within two inches of the ar. Upon the initial COl'llbllS- tion, the wax being burned from the clothfabric, the cone will collapse atthe outer end and thus close the open bore of the cone. Further combustion of the wax and collapsing of the cloth fabric serves to drive the heated air and smoke into the ear, and. this, combined with the generated heat, serves to fully clean the ear, and is eiiect' alike, for cure of surplus ear wax, deafnt gatherings and abcesses. and for removing foreign substances from the ear. This treat ment is psinles and all danger of iniury to the ear is eliminated by its use. When the was component of the cone has been turned from the cloth fabric to within t-Wo inches of the car, the cone is then removed from the ear. For each treatment of the ear. a new cone is required.

1. An instrument for treatment of the car. which consists of a hollow cone having the apex of a size to enter well within the and formed from a light and tightly woven cloth fabric, and a coating of combustible wax on the cloth fabric.

2. A device for treatment of the car, con.- sisting of a cloth fabric cone, having open ends and a hollow interior, a combustion wax incorporated with the cloth fabric, and. a cost of wax on the exterior of the cone.
