METAL ROLL.
Application nled April i2, 1921.
` To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, EMIL M. Rnrion, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal.
Rolls, of whichthe following is a specifica tion'.
" Ihis invention `relates to forming and i0 shaping rolls and more particularly to those used for rolling objects the cross sectional area of which is varied throughout the length thereof and where necessary are geared or meshed to insure their holding and to cause the impressions in the rolls to match as they revolve.
The object of the invention is to so construct a set of rolls that objects of special shape or round, square,.lat, hexagon or any other` section or combination of sections or where the cross sectional area is not retained throughout the length of the vbar to be rolled may be formed and' the excess metal which overflows or is pressed out from the impressionor die at points where smaller cross sectional areas are produced will be caught in depressions or utters formed in the faces of the rolls, the ash or excess metal to be trimmed or cut or hot or cold after the bar has been rolled.
`Another object is to so position and conneet the gutters above referred to that the overflow therein may be readily trimmed or cut from the rolled article.
With .these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. l,
2, 4, 5, and 6 a pair of forming rolls i vand 2' are shown which are mounted to revolve in unison with their periplieries in contact, (see Fig. 2). These rolls are provided with a groove, impression or die conforming to the shape of the article to be formed or rolled by feeding the bar or billet 10 between them. These grooves, impressions or dies compris ing a plurality of large grooves 3, four being here lshown spaced peripherally equal distances apart and having arranged between and connecting them grooves 4 of smaller cross sectional area, said smaller grooves being flared at their opposite ends as' shown' at 5. The flared ends of the smaller grooves merge into the larger grooves 3 whereby inclined or tapered shoulders 13 are formed at the junction of the larger parts ll and the smaller parts 12 of the bar or billet l0 being rolled. y Y Y vIt is to be understood that while the above described form of die or impression is herein shown any other form may be employed, portions of which vary in cross sectional Formed in the peripheral faces of the rolls on opposite sides of each of the smallei` grooves 4 and spaced laterally therefrom are flash gutters or troughs 6' corresponding in length to the length of said grooves 4 and connected by shallow -conduits 7. These conduits 7 are designed to permit the excess metal produced by the bar l0 passing through the smaller grooves 4 to flow or be pressed out through said conduits into the gutters 6 and form a thin iin of metal 14 which connects the metal in the gutters with the smaller cross sectional part 12 of the bar and is designed to be trimmed or cut off either hot or cold after the bar isl taken from thevrolls. l
In the operation of the rolls a bar 10 is fed between them while they are revolving and the mating dies cr grooves. in the faces thereof produce the desired shape in the bar so rolled, the excess material which is pressed out when the barpasses through the smaller grooves 4 being caught in the gutters 6. This 1 excess material will provide scrap of a desirable quality withoutin anyway interfering with the proper rolling of the bar andthe bar after being rolled may be readily'sepalio ` in the other figures, three oniy of the larger grooves being here showin connected lIcy v'smaller grooves e of different lengths other# Wisethis form thesanie as that shown in the other ligures.
The preferred embodiment of the inven tion isdisclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it Will he understood that any modifications Within the scope of the claimed invention v-may be made in the construction Without departing from the principle ofthe invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

A set of rolls-having opposed faces, each of the opposed faces provided With sets of registering Vforining cavities, each set comprising a cylindrical cavity, oppositely disposed taperingforming cavities projecting from the termini `of said cylindrical'cavity, an elongated cylindrical: 'forining cavity leading to one of the ta ering cavities, and the said faces of said rols further provided with a recess atleach side of and connected with said elongated `cylindrical forming cavity by a lateral conduit.

A set of rolls having op .osed faces, each of the opposed faces provic ed with sets of registering forming cavities,;each set coinprising a cylindricall cavity, oppositely disposed tapering forniing cavitiesprojecting from the `termini of said cylindrical cavity, an elongated cylindrical forming cavity leading to one of the .tapering cavities,A andV the said faces of said rolls furtherprovided Witha recess at each side of and connected with said elongatedcylndrical forming cav` ity by alateral `conduit, said elongated cy` lindrical Cavity shallovver than "said iiapering cavities and short cylindrical cavities.
