Be it known that. I, MARSHALL T. Goronrri, a citizen of -the United States, residingat Sugarland, in the county of Fort Bend and State of Texas, have invented a new and ing is a specification. V
This lnventlon relates. to presses or cotton'packing machines, the primary ob ect Qfthe invention being to provide a press having a vertically reciprocating plunger wherein the construction of the device is such as to eliminate any side motion of the plunger during the operation thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a press of this character wherein the plunger operates in a true vertical plane to cause the cotton engaging extremity thereof, to exert an even pressure on the cot-;
ton during the packing operation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which Will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, itbeing understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing c Figure 1 illustrates a side elevational view of a press constructed in accordance with the present invention.

Figure 5 is a diagrammatical View disclosing the positions of the operating gear and shaft connecting the operating gear with the connecting rod at the initial movement of the operating gear. Figure 7 is a diagrammatical view disclosing the positions of the operating gear and its shaft when the operating gear has moved one half of the distance. Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the base of the frame which includes uprights 6 that have the horizontal bars 7 mounted thereon, which bars 7 support the operating means to be hereinafter more fully described.
Bolted to the base 5 is the bale form 8 which comprises a plurality of spaced members secured together by means of the bars 9, so that when pressure is brought to bear on the cotton within the form 8, any possibility of bulging of the form is absolutely prevented.
V A plate v10 is secured to one of the bars 7, and as shown, this plate is provided with an internal gear 11, which gear meshes with the teeth of the pinion 12 mounted on the shaft 13 that is carried on one-end of the arm 14, which in turn is secured to the shaft 15. The number of teeth of the plate 10. and pinion 12 may be varied according to the size of the machine, but it is to be understood that the ratio of teeth should be two to one.
This arm 14: is weighted at its free end, to cause an even and steady rotation of the pinion 12 within the stationary plate 10. A pinion '16 is also mounted on the shaft 15, and this pinion 16 meshes with a rela tively small pinion 17, which is mounted on the inner extremity of the shaft 18 which also supports the pulleys 19 and 20, the pulley 20 being loosely mounted on the shaft so that the belt 21, when operating over the pulley 20 will cause the machine to idle. but when the belt is shifted to the pulley 19 as by means of the belt shift lever 22, the machine is brought into operation.
A support 23 carrying a shaft 23 is carried by the pinion 12 and this bearing member provides means of connection between the connecting rod 2 1 and the arm 14, mounted on the opposite side of the plate 10 so that movement of the arm 1 1 will produce a relative movement of the connecting rod 24. This connecting rod 2 1 has its lower extremity bolted to the plunger 25, which plunger is of a size to move within the form 8, when the same descends, there being provided guide rods 26 operating through suitable tubular guideways 27 supported by the horizontal bars 7 thereby insuring a true vertical movement of the plunger.
The operation of the device is as follows:
Rotary motion is imparted to the shaft 18, through the belt 21 operating over the pulley 19 which in turn rotates the pinion 17 which is in mesh with pinion 16 carried on the shaft 15. As the pinion 16 rotates, the arm 14 carried thereby revolves, and
since the arm 14: carries the pinion 12, it will be seen that the pinion 12 revolves Within the plate 10. Since the plunger is supported by the support 23 carried by the pinion 12, it is obvious that as the pinion 12 is revolved within the plate 10, the plunger 25 reciprocates within the form 8.
From the foregoing it is obvious that due to the construction of the arm 14 andbearing member 23, the connecting rod moves in a true vertical plane to the end that an even pressure is exerted throughout the entire surface of the cotton under operation, and that a rotary movement of a relatively short arm is converted into a reciprocating movement. diagrammatical figures illustrates the movement of the shaft 23 while the arrow as indicated by the letter B designates the direction of rotation of the gear 12.
