To all 107mm t 'may con/eww l Be it known that I, BRYAN l?. JOYCE, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a. resident ot Davenport, county of Scott, and State ot loivz., have invented an improvement in Couplings, of which the tolloiving'is a Specification.
The invention described herein may be used by the Government., or any of its oticers or employees in prosecution of Work for the Government, or by any other person in the United States, Without payment to me i any royalty thereon. t l
This invention relates to a connection 1ntended primarily for connecting a gun barrelv with its recoil piston rod.
The main object of the invention is the provision of a connection through Which the members may be readily assembled and disassembled.
i lfurther object ot the invention is the pl'oVSOll of a simple, cheap and etticient connection. i
lV ith these and otherl objects in vieiv which will appear' as the description proceeds, my inx'fention resides in the novel arangenientand combination of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be madeA Within the scope of what is claimed Without departingfrom the spirit ol the invention. y
A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. l is a view in side elevation of a connection constructed in accordance with the invention g Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawing by numerals ot reference: i
The breech end of a gun barrel is :tormed with a recoil lug 11 provided Wit-h a bore l) for the' reception of the end ot' a recoil piston rod 13, which rod has cut therein an annular groove 14.-.
The lugl1 is provided with a transverse slot 1.5 communicating; With the bore 1Q, in `which is mounted a slide 1G formed with a keyhole slot or Opening 1T the enlarged portion otl which slot is ot' suflicieiut. diameter to permit the passage therethrough et therediiced end ot the piston rod 13 and the smaller or restricted portion ot which. embraces that portion ot the rod forming .the bot-tom oit' 'the groove 14 when the slide is pushed to its left hand position, as shown inbreken and dotted lines in Fig. 2. For the purpose of locking' the slide at either its right hand or left hand positions.v I pro vide a key i8 urged toward locking` position by means such as the coil springl) and provided'vvith a knob 20 to permit of manual release ot' the key. This key 18 seats in the largeportion of the key hole slot when the .slide is in .its lett hand position, asl seen most clearly in Fig. 2 and, by Contact with the such slot, holds the slide against displacementto the right, while, With the slide moved to the right, the key seats in the aperture 2l termed in the slide and so holds the slide against movement.
To permit the slide to be easily moved from one position to the other I provide snugly ears or lugs 22 and 23 on respective ends thereof which serve to limit lthe movementot the slide to the right or left.
The reduction of the end oit the rod 13, While not essential forl .the purpose ol this invention, is a great convenience as it forms a shoulder on the rod adapted to Contact the slide and so properly position the members for couplingA engagement.`
l claim:
1.. The combination with a gun barrel formed with having a transverse .slot communic'atingr With the aperture and a rod adapted to enter the aperture, said rod provided. With an apertured connecting lugv an annular' groove, of a slide in the slot -Forme( vvitli a key hole opening the enlarged portion' oitl such opening permitting` the` pase therethrough 0i the end ot the rod when the slide is in unlocked position and the restricted portion of the opening adapted to seat in the groove to loelc the rod to the lug when the slide is moved to locked position and a spring* pressed plunger' mounted in the lug and operable to releasably hold the slide in locked or unlocked positions.
2. The combination with a connecting lug havingan aperture and a slot eominunicating; with the aperture, .of Va rod adapted to enter the aperture and formed with an annular zgroove, a. slide in the'slot 'formed With a l-ey hole opening therein to permit `passhdo anflmeans 'for releasably holding Save of thel'od when in one position and to Sozlt in the groove-M1911 nanot-her position, )#9102115 for limiting the 'movement Of" the the slide in either position. y
2. connect-ing lug 'formed with un (r1-ture and a slot commumcating with apthe yi-pe1"tu1.e, arod adapted tochter the apefture und formed with av g'oowje: a slide in the slot and embracing the 1odm0'vab1e to one p0- siton t0 release the rod and to another position no enter the groove and 100k thvr www P.
