Description

Patented Feb. 27, 3.923.
SAFETY RAZOR.
Application filed July 15,
To all 20 710m it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT A. OsBURN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Safety Razors, of which the followlng 1s a specification.
My inventiton relates toan improved type of safety razor and contemplates providlng an old style razor handle with a holder for a standard safety razor blade, thereby enabling such blades to be utilized in that style of razor. I
A distinctive feature of my invention relates to the improved type of blade holder having novel means for effectively clamping the blade in operating position therein.
A further feature of my invention relates to the formation of the handle to receive the screw sleeve which applies the clamp holder to the razor blade so that the blade holder may fold down sufliciently to house the cutting edge of the razor blade in the handle.
My invention further comprises the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, which in their preferred embodiment only are illustratedin the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved razor.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. l with the handle partly broken away.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the blade holder detached from the handle and having the safety guard removed.
Fig. 4. is a detail perspective view of the reversible safety guard which can be applied to either side of the razor blade as may be desired.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
My razor, as illustrated, comprises a hen dle portion 1, of the general character used in old style razors, and I have pivotally attached to the handle by a rivet a holder 3 for a safety razor blade 4: which may be of any standard type. Such blades are usually provided with one or more openings or slots in their center and with these are adapted to interlock bosses 5 on one wing 7 of the blade holder 3, which holder is formed from a single sheet of metal formed to provide a tubular base portion 6 and opposed clamping wings 7 in one of which the bosses 5 are 1921. Serial no. 485,059.
formed, and in the otherofwhich I form openings 8 opposite the bosses. The clamp 3 has formed integral therewith a split tapering tubular threaded "shank 9 and beyond suchthreaded 'portionthi's shank is flattened to form the rear'handle portion 10 of the blade holder and'it is this shank to disengage from the blade when the sleeve is run down the threaded shank 9 towards the handle. In order to adapt my razor for use as a safety razor, I provide a reversible safety guard formed of bent metal shaped to form a tubular base 12 of equal size throughout and adapted toslip endwise with a snug fit onto the tubular portion 6 of the blade holder 3. One endof the tubular portion is extended about the cutting edge of the razor blade and serrated to form the guard 13 while the other end 14; terminates just above the level of the wings 7 on the blade clamp. Being symmetrical this guard can be reversed and have either end slipped onto the blade holder, thus bringing the guard to the right hand or the left hand of the razor blade as may be desired for either right or left hand shaving.
In order that the blade holder may be folded down into the handle the latter is grooved out to form a recess or seat 15 adapted to receive a screw sleeve 11 at least sufliciently to permit the exposed cuttin edge of the blade to be housed in thehandle.
n operation, by unscrewing the sleeve 11 the holder wings 7 expand apart, a safety razor blade is inserted in place between the Wings and the screw is run up on the shank v 9 until the blade is rigidly clamped in position. The guard is then applied as desired to either right or left hand side of the blade and the razor is thereupon available for use like an old fashioned razor but with all advantages of a safety razor. By removing the guard the razor may be stropped or honed like an old style razor blade.
My construction permits of a very cheap an inexpensive production ,of an old style razor utilizing'safety blades and its. details of construction may be variously modified Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus describedmy inventiong'what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A safety razor comprising v a blade. holder formed of a metal "sheet shaped to form a blade clamp With a tubular, ta oered and threaded, split shank, a 'nut' in thread ed engagement on said shank; and a handle attached the shank;thefshankgloeing flattened beyond its threaded" portion and 'pivoted to the handl'el 2. A safety razor Gaming Made holder formed .o f jnietal '"sheetbent .to pro-'- vide a blade clamp shaped toco'nform substantially to the transverse crosssection of handle having a bifurcated end, and means to pivot the flattened end of said shank at an intermediate point in the bifurcated end of thehandle.
3. A safety razo r as described in claim 2, i wh h hend er a' i .l irQWppening to hoiise the blade 'and an alargggdmeess to receive the fnnt o n the beyond the threads, a nut screwed on the tapered threaded portion of said shank, a
