G. B. COLUNS gLIP FORMING MACHINE 5 sheets-Sheet .3
Filed Mar. 31, 1920 CLIP-3T0 To all whom it ant (4y concern:
Be it known that 4 once B. 'Connrns, citizen l J T rates of r'tmerira, and a resident or ...\1ol1l,ll' in the county of Jefferson and l'ltate of le:;as, have invented certain new and use improvements in flip-Fermi: Machines of which the iollowin v is specification, eference a to the it rination or rich 1s a '1 clip or the hinging a handle ching or can or container.
@ne object of my invention is to a simple and eilectire machine ada producing clips the at'cresaid c n. in large quantities from circular lolanks, which constitute scrap material and are hole is provided for in the top of the can. in the'manu acture of cans from tin plate usually required to be hinged or pivotally attached to the top of the can. it frequently has the form of a wire loop vi lich 1S tened to provide a straight sloe which engages the can and another straight side to rying the by the handle. The wire loop may conveniently he aiffixed to the can b7,
corrur ion is formed to receive the handle irrn'oved inacline for quickly and eiiectivel v producing clips suitable tor this put produced when the usual filling or pouring or other sheet metal a carrying handle is 1 ilatengage the lingers oi the person who is carsolderin thereto a clip in which a 51.0 or
it has been my aim to provide an ti-om circular blanks which are cut pose from the tops of the cans. to insert screw top for example, and constitnte scr p ma terial.
Other objects and ail anages of my invention will he set will now desmab the drawings ain. point out turcs thereof in ihe appended claim.

9 is a sectional view er the clip with portions of the forming rolls, ing their cooperative action in the arion off the clip. ,gure 10 is sectional elevation in detail showing the chute." for carrying the blanks to the trimmer and forming rollers, re spectively.
Figure 11 is a plan detail of the chutes showing the arrangementfor ejecting the blanlrs from the cutting rollers.
Figure 12 is a cross section of one 01" the chutes.
Like parts designated by the same reference characters in each of the figures.
The handle clip forming machine illus trated comprises a frame 10 which supports a pluralilw of she ts 11, l2, l3 and 14. As clearly shown in Figure 3 the shaft 11 proviiled with tight and loose belt pulleys 15 and 16, the operation or the machine being d by shifter 17. Athxed to the shaft 11 is a forming wheel 18 which cooperates with the forming wheel on the shaft 12, one of the wheels-being provided with annular projections producing a central iead 20 and flat shoulders 21 adjacent thereto and the other being provided with correspondingly formed depressions or grooves.
The shafts 11 and 12 are supported by hearing blocks 29, and 28 adjustahly mounted in the "frame 10 ot the machine, which is composed of spaced end brackets in the usual manner. The position of the bearing; lilOClISiH determined by suitable adjusting-1* screws :24 and 2?). The center distance be shatts ll and 12 can thus he adjust -;l to suit the thickness of the sheet metal oi which the clips are to he formed.
The shaft 14; is driven from the shaft it by means of a sprocket chain 26 which en hrs 29 end 30 and cooperating pairs oi out rug wheels iii, and 32 are eiiixed to the s-tiietts l3 and 14-.
[l ne bhinlrs ot' which the clips are formed are fed into :i hopper 35 of a chute 86 which delivers the blanks one by one to the cutting wheels where they are trimmedalone the lines 254-, the "form o't each clip sein changed from that of Figure 6 to that or Figure The chute 36 is provided with ribs 3'? to reduce the friction in the sliding movement of the hlen 's, end with a top or guide n'iember 38 torn-sing e passageway 39 for the passage of the clips, as clearly shown in i igure The cop may have an observe-- tion. slot h) in order that the operator can see it the hlenl'rs are feeding 'n'operly.
There would be tendency for the blanks of Figure l to lodge in the depression of the "cinele cutting roller and in order to prevent this an ejector 5&1 is provided which consists of e; finger or extension oi? the top member The ejector extends between the i, rollers and after each blank has been trimmed ejects it onto a chute 42 which conducts the bl nhs one by one to the forming rollers 18 and 19.
The chute 4:2 is constructed in much the some form as the chute 3K3; it is provided with at top or guide member 4-3 and with friction reducing ribs. The passageway tor the trimmed blanks may obviously be of a LUA.
somewhat sin width thenthirt of the pathway 39 oi chute 3G. The trimmed blanks delivered to the roiiers i8 and are operated upon by the forming wheels and are allowed to drop into at bin (not shown), the clips being in the final term as shown in Figure 8.
Attention is particularly directed to the feet thet the mechite in simple and direct manner changes a circular disc of sheet metzii which is scrap materiel into iinished clip, having parallel edges adopted to be soldered on to can for securing a loop handle thereto.
l l hat I claim is:
A handle clip forming machine comprising a pair oi cooperating; sl'ieering; wheels, ii chute tor s ding a. succession of circular blanks to the shearing; wheels. at porterrated guide or cover mar ier for the chute having :1 narrow longitudinal projection ex tending into the groove oi one o the sheering wheels tor the trin'nned hlenlrs to rein, a. pair of forming wheels, and a relatively 'isrrow chute adapted to receive the trimmed blanks "from the shearing wheels and to carry the bi wheels in n fixed position.
in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of March, 1920.
