To all whom it may concern it known that T EDGAR B. SYMoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evanston in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Heads for Disk Crushing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in crushing machines and has particular refer ence to what I prefer to call a horizontal sand machine of the crushing disc type. Une object of my invention is to provide a new and improved arrangement for adjusting the distance between the crushing discs and thereby controlling the size of the output. Another object is to provide such adjusting means as will be rigid and accurate andvwill not change in their relation in wear. Another object is to provide means for easily and conveniently changing such adjusting means and the adjustment made by them and means for supporting one part upon another while such adjustment is being made. Other objects will appear from time to time in the specification.
My invention is illustrated more or less diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a section through the crushing head end of the machine;
Figure 2 is aplan view of a part of the machine, the hood shown in Figure 1 being omitted for the purpose of clearness:
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Figure 4 is a detailed plan View of one of the spacing shims.
Like parts are indicated by like characters in all the figures.
The operating, driving and controlling parts of my crushing machine have been omitted from the drawings since they form no part of my invention. They have been limited to the crushing head itself which is the subject matter of the invention.

is an annular crushing disc supporting plate. .3 is a crushing disc rigidly and permanently mounted on that plate as shown. This disc is open at the center to permit the feed chute B to discharge therethrough into the lenticular crushing zone. The flange A and the plate are both perforated about their outer peripheries and bolts B extend through said perforations. These bolts are spaced comparatively close together as shown in Figure 2 and they rigidly tie the flange and plate together about their perioheries. Mounted on these bolts are spacing sleeves B The deflector plates B, B are perforated so that the bolts B may pass through them. They are located one on either side of the sleeve 13*. The purpose is to assist in guiding the material as it is discharged centrifugally from the periphery of the lenticular crushing zone and to prevent to as great an extent as possible the discharge of the material along lines inclined to t 1e plane of the crushing zone. The sleeves ll besides acting as spacing sleeves prevent the material discharging from a crushing zone.

They are each of them slotted as shown at C iii Figure 41,. this slot being provided so that these shims may be dropped over and moved from the bolts without withdrawing the bolts. the idea being that when it is necessary to change the distance between the crushing discs either because they have worn down or because it is desired to change the size of the product these shims may after the bolts have been loosened be withdrawn without completely withdrawing the bolts and thus removing the support for the outer crushing disc.
These shims are relatively short and the shims surrounding one bolt do not come in contact with the shims surrounding another and the spacing ring B is thus doubly necessary since it covers the gas between adj acent groups of shims and presents a smooth surface for the contact of flying particles are adjusting and which may be deflected out of their normal rectilinear path. Each of these spacing shims is perforated as at C and the ring B is also perforated as well as the plate B near each of the holding bolts so that the holding pin 0 may be passed through the entire group. This pin is held in place by a cap G enclosing the head C and this cap is held down by a ca screw C the purpose of this arrangement eing to permit a ready withdrawal of this pin when it is desired to remove the shims or hold the machine in position while in operation and the purpose of the pin itself is to hold each group of shlms in position before the bolts are tightened up. It is understood that in adjusting the crushing head each bolt will be loosened. The shim will be added or withdrawn until the proper adjustment can be made and the bolts will then be tightened up. It becomes necessary, however, to rotate the crushing head while this adjustment is taking place and before the bolts are tightened and the pin co-operating with the long slot in each shim prevents the shims dropping away from the bolt when upside down.
It will be evident that while I have shown in my drawings an operative device, still many changes might be made both in size, shape and arrangement of parts without departing materially from the spirit of my 111- vention, and I wish, therefore, that my drawings be regarded as in a sense diagrammatic.
The use and operation of my invention are as tollows:-
It invariably develops in connection with my type of rotating disc crushing machines that in operation it becomes from time to time necessary to change the distances between the members supporting the two crushing discs. This change is necessitated both by the wear of the discs which must be brought from time to time closer together to compensate for their wearing it' a uniform product is to be obtained and by the desire occasionally developing for a diiierent sized product. The fullest mentioned require ment, that is to say adjustment for wear always calls for a decrease of the distance between the supporting members, The second requirement, that is to say for a varying sized product sometimes calls for a decrease and sometimes for anincrease.
It will be noted that the two supporting members are held together by a series of holding bolts which tend to force the parts together and clamp between them a series of bolt engaging sleeves together with spacing shims. These sleeves are mounted on the bolts and are never removed. The spacing shims, however, are removable and are arranged as shown in different sizes so that by adding or taking away any desired adjustment within a reasonable range may be made.
This adjustment is made in the following manner. The enclosing hood or housing is opened and the two hinged halves allowed to drop down thus exposing the crushing head. The lock nuts are then manipulated to release the holding nuts and these nuts are turned so as to permit the head parts to be separated. it is only necessary to turn these nuts a short distance suiiicient to release the pressure upon the shims and sufficient to permit the holding pins which hold the shims in position to be withdrawn. When this is done the shims are removed or others are inserted, the holding pins are replaced, the nuts are screwed up on the bolts to jam the parts together and the lock nuts are then put in place.
It will be noted that the lock nuts are pro vided with sleeves projecting upwardly and closing the ends of the bolts. This is for the purpose of protecting the threads from battering by the flying particles as they are discharged under centrifugal force form the crushing head. Obviously the power of the screw and nut is sufficient to draw the cleat supporting parts together after the adjustment has been made. Since this power is not available for separating the parts to release the pressure on the shims other means such as are "found in any shop may be used, a lever or a hammer or a jack or any other suitable arrangement.
By this arrangement it will be understood that the plate holding the heads may be easily and conveniently adjusted toward one another and that by holding these special shims in reserve any desired adjustment may be made. The discharge of material to one side is prevented so far as possible by the covering ring and obviously there will be no tendency of material to bank up between the ends of the adjacent shims because centrifugal force will prevent.
There will be no wear on the shims thei selves and no possibility of any material getting between adjacent shims because of the fact that the powerful holding screws are amply powerful to clamp the parts together and lock the shims in position and prevent any rocking of one cleat, that is of one disc supporting part with respect to the other.
I claim:
1. In a crushing machine a crushing head comprising two parallel supporting plates, means for rigidly and adjustably fastening them together, comprising a series of spacing sleeves between them, holding bolts passing through them and the sleeves, and a series of removable shims interposed between the plate and the sleeves, and crushing discs located between the plates, the shims being slotted so as to straddle the bolts there being one group of shims for each bolt, means independent of the holding bolts for holding the shims they can be tightened up.
In a crushing machine comprising two opposed supporting plates, a rotating crushing head, a pair of crushing discs within the head, and means for operating them to crush material while they rotate, a hood surrounding the head and adapted to contain the material as it is discharged from between the in position until discs by centrifugal force, holding bolts adapted to lock the supporting plates together, and mounted in the head, and means carried by said bolts for protecting their threads against battering by the impact of deflected discharged material from between the discs.
3. In a crushing machine comprising opposed compression members, adjustable spacing means between the compression members, comprising bolts passing through such compression members, spacing sleeves surrounding said bolts, adjusting shims removably supported on each bolt and means independent of said bolts for holding the shims against rotation thereabout during adjustment.

5. In a crushing machine comprising opposed compression members, adjustable spacing means between the compression members, spacing sleeves surrounding said bolts, adjusting shims removably supported on each bolt and means independent of said bolts for holding the shims against rotation thereabout during adjustment, comprising pins adjacent each bolt, connecting one oi said compression members and the shims and means for preventing the dis placement of said pins.
6. In a crushing machine comprising opposed compression members, adjustable spacing means between the compression members, spacing sleeves surrounding said bolts, adjusting shims removably supported on each bolt and means independent of said bolts for holding the shims against rotation thereabout during adjustment, comprising removable pins adjacent each bolt, connecting one of said compression members and the shims and means for preventing the displacement of said pins, comprising members secured to the compression members and removably covering the ends oi. said pins.
7. In a crushing machine comprising opposed compression members, adjustable spacing means between the compression members, comprising bolts passing through such compression members, spacing sleeves surrounding said bolts, adjusting shims removably supported on each bolt and means independent of said bolts for holding the shims against rotation thereabout during adjustment, and adeflector plate covering the shims and located between them and the discharge area about the edge of the crushing members.
8. A disk type crusher embodying two relatively movable heads, one of said heads having a peripheral shoulder, means for holding said heads in adjusted spaced relation comprising an abutment member spanning the space between said heads and adjusting means interposed between said abutment member and one of said heads and protected by said shoulder.
