T 0 all whom t may cof/wem Be it known that I, AUGUST HoLMQUIs'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoopeston, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pulping Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to pulping machines and it has particular relation to machines of the character designated wherein are embodied preliminary cutting means and a screen through which material is forced, the latter being capable' of removal from the machine by simple andexpeditious means.
One object of my invention is to provide, in combination with a machine of the character designated, preliminary cutting knives .l
in a particular type of screw conveyor. As' screw conveyor and` crushing means 1s a plain screw conveyor' sociated with the which receives the material after it has been given a to force the material through the screen.
The crushing means heretofore referred to is also formed so that it operates to convey the refuse, which is not forced through the screen, to the end of the pulping"`cham ber' where it discharges through a suitable outlet. Mea-ns are provided in combination with the screen to collect the pulped material and provide for its proper discharge.
Still another object of my invention is to provide an end closure member for''the pulping machine which has associated therewith4 means for securing the cylindrical screens at one end. Thls end member 1s so mounted on the machlne that 1t may be disengaged reliminary slicing and feeds it to--` the crus ing means, the latter operating from the screen and theend of the chamber in such manner that the screen may be withdrawn from the interior of the machine. The provision of such means is quite advantageous in a machine of this character since it' is essential that the screen be readily 'accessible and removable 'for purposes of cleaning and repairing.

-Ibt will be observed that thev latter member functions to close the right-hand end of the casing and that it has formed therein an annular channel 18. A substantially cylindrical screen 19 extends longitudinally are mounted on the shafts in the modified within the casing and surrounds the shaft 15, boing secured at one end in the portion l1, as shown, and at the other end in the annular channel 18 of the member 17.
Immediately above the chamber 11 is positioned a hopper 20v into which the material to be pulped may be fed. At the bottom of the hopper is arrange? a plurality of preliminary cutting knives 21 which slice the fruit with a chopping motion prior to its falling through into its chamber 11. These knives will be more particularly hereinafter described. Guards 20a extend downwardly from the hopper and in juxtaposition with the shafts upon which the knives are mounted whereby whatever material is fed into thehopper is forced to pass between the said shafts and be thereby subjected to the cutting edges of both sets of knives.
Secured to the shaft 15 in the chamber 11 is a plain screw conveyor 22 which serves to move the material, falling thereinto after being cut by the knives 21, to the right into the interior of the screen. Attached to the shaft 15 and within the screen 19, is a specially formed screw 23 which functions to crush the material and squeeze it outwardly through openings in the screen 19 and, at the same time, to urge the refuse, which does not pass through the screen, to the right and outwardly through a discharged spout 24 which is formed integrally with the end member 17. The shaft 15 and its associated conveyor and crushing screws are rotated by any suitable means, here represented as a belt driven wheel 25.
Keyed to the shaft 15 is a gear wheel 26 which meshes with a gear 27 secured to a shaft 28. The gear 27 in turn meshes with a gear 29 secured to a shaft 30 whereby the shafts 28 and 30 rotate oppositely with respect to each other. The plurality of cutting knives 21 are eccentrically mounted on the shafts 28 and 30 in such manner that upon rotation they interleave (see Fig. 4) and thus function to chop the material which settles down thereupon after being fed into the hopper 20.
Reference to Fig. 6 will illustrate the manner in which these knives are mounted to interleave with each other and to perform the chopping function.
The knives heretofore described are keyed to the shafts 28 and 30 in such manner that the knives on one shaft are eccentrically mounted thereupon and are superposed when viewed from the end of said shaft. Thisl particular disposition of the knives results in their being interleaved to the maximum extent at the time when their maximum eccentricities are crossing the plane of the shafts and having their cutting edges substantially adjacent a line midway between said shafts where said knives are 180 degrees from the point of maximum interleaving. As will be noted, the distance between the shafts is substantially equal to the maximum eccentricity of the knives.
It may be desirable in some instances to so arrange the eccentrically mounted knives that there is no point during their combined rotation when some of the blades are not interleaved. I accomplish this by disposing the knives on the shafts as illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8. From a consideration of Fig. 7 it will be noted that the knives on one shaft are not superposed when viewed from the end of said shaft as they are in Fig. 6, that is to say the centers of the circular knife blades on any one shaft lie on the surface of a cylinder the axis of which is the aforesaid shaft.- In other words, the knives are not only mounted eccentrically upon the shaft but are also eccentric to each other by reason of being keyed to the shaft in different angular directions.
The result of such dispositioning of the' knives is shown in Fig. 8. It will be observed that there is no period during thel combined rotation of the knives that some of them do not interleave with some ofthe knives on the other shaft. I find that the latter method of mounting the knives is desirable under some particular circumstances.
The end closure member 17 is positioned adjacent a beam 31 which has formed centrally thereof a journalled portion 32 supporting the right-hand of the shaft 15. The beam 31 is pivotally mounted on one of the standards 10 as at 33 and is formed at its' other end with an ear 34 whereby it may be maintained in fixed relation to the frame by a bolt 85. The beam 81 is slidable along its point of pivotal support in such manner that itmay be disengaged from the screen end of the shaft 15 and, after being moved sufiiciently far to the right, may be swung out of the way of the closure member 17 as shown in Fig. 5, after the beam 31 has been disengaged from the end of the shaft 15 and swung out of the way of the closure member 17, the closure member 11 may be disengaged from the end of the screen 19 and the pulping chamber 12 and slipped off from the end of the shaft 15. A nut 36 may be threaded onto portion of the shaft between the journal portion 32 and the closure member 17, in order to holdthe closure member 17 snugly in engagement with the end of the screen 19. This particular type of closure and supporting member admits of thev removal of the screen 19 from the interior of the machine whereby said screen may be very simply detached and cleaned or repaired.
Having described my machine' in detail, the operation thereof is more or less apparent. Y
The material to be pulped is fed into the hopper 2O and, as it settles down on the oppositely rotating `knives 21, is chopped or sliced, after which it falls into the chamber l1. It is moved to the right by the screw conveyor 22 into contact with the conveying and crushing screws 23 by means of which it is crushed and the usable material squeezed outwardly through the openings in the screen 1S) whereby a satisfactory pulping is secured. The refuse which does not pass through the screen is moved to the right by the conveying action of the screw 23 and is finally discharged through the spout 24. T he pulp is received on the surface 13 and may be gathered through the spout 14.
vWhile I have described but two embodi- .ments of my improved preliminary cutting therefore, that my invention be given a broad interpretation and be limited only by the showing of the prior art dnd by the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a pulping machine, a main chamber1 a cylindrical screen centrally positioned longitudinally therein, an end member closing said chamber and provided with means for maintaining said screen in position, said member having an outlet associated therewith through which refuse from inside said screen may be discharged, and means for withdrawing said member from engagement with said screen and swinging it aside to permit the removal thereof from said chamber.
2. In a pulping machine, a pulping chamber, a cylindrical screen centrally positioned therein, a material supply hopper, a receiving chamber beneath said hopper and in co-extensive relationl with said screen, preliminary cutting means between the hopper and chamber, a shaft extending through said co-extensive portions, a screw on said shaft in said receiving chamber operating to convey said material to said screen portion, and a screw on said shaft within said screen so shaped that the material is crushed and forced through said screen l'and the refuse is conveyed to the end of the'screen remote from said receiving end.
3. In a pulping machine, a pulping chamber, a material-receiving hopper. and cutting means therebetween comprising a plurality of eccentrically mounted rotatingl knives.
4. In a pulping machine, a pulping chamber, amaterial-receiving hopper, and cutting means therebetween comprising agplurality ting means disposed in the opening theref between and comprising a plurality of oppositely rotatable shafts and circular knives eccentrically mounted thereupon whereby the material passing between said shafts is subjected to a chopping operation.

In a Lulping machine, a pulping chamber, a material-receiving hopper, and cutting means disposed in the opening therebetween and comprising a plurality of oppositely rotatable shafts and circular knives eccentrically mounted thereupon whereby the material passing between said shafts is subjected to a chopping' operation, the locus of the centers of said knives on each shaft being a circle whose center is said shaft.
8. In a pulping machine, a pulping chamber, a material receiving hopper and cutting means therebetween comprising a plurality of eccentrically mounted rotating knives, said knives being so mounted that they are not superposed when viewed from the ends thereof. l

In a pulping machine, a pulping chamber, a material receiving hopper and cutting means therebetween comprising a plurality j of oppositely rotating knives mounted upon shafts, the knives on any one shaft being mounted thereupon eccentrically and being so mounted that they are angularly vdisposed about said shaft with respect to each other. i
l0.l In a pulping machine, a pulping chamber, a screen disposed therein, a shaft on which material treating instrumentalities are positioned extending through said screen, an end closure member for said chamber embodying means for holdingsaid screen and a journal for one end of said shaft, means whereby said journal may be disengaged from said shaft and swung aside to 'l permit removal of the closure member and screen from said chamber.
11. In a pulping machine,a pulping cha-1nber, a screen disposed therein, a shaft on which material treating instrumentalitiesi are positioned extending through said screen, an end closure member tor said cham ber embodying means for holding said screen,`a journal for one end of said shaft,
a supporting beam for said journal, and
means on which said beam is slidably and pivotally mounted whereby said journal may be disengaged from said shaft and swung aside to permit removal of the closure member and screen from said chamber.
12. A pulping machine comprising a horizontal substantially cylindrical casing, a cylindrical screen in said casing substantially co-axial therewith, means for feeding material to be pulped to said screen, rotatable means in said screen and co-axial therewith for pulping the material in said screen, and forcing it through the mesh thereof into the casing surrounding said screen, driving mechanism for said rotatable means at one end of said cylindrical casing, a head for closing the other end of the casing and one end of the screen, said head being mounted for ready attachment and detachment with respect to said cylindrical casing and screen., and said screen being mounted for ready attachment and detachment with respect to said casing, whereby said head can be readily detached from the casing and screen, and the screen then readily withdrawn lengthwise through the open end of the casing.

A pulping'machine comprising a horizontal substantially cylindrical casing, a cylindrical screen in said casing substantially co-axial therewith, means for feeding material to be pulped to said screen, a rotatable shaft extending through said screen and casing co-axial therewith, means mounted on said shaft and rotatable therewith for pulping the material in the screen and forcing it ,through lthe mesh thereof into the casing surrounding the screen, driving `mechanism for said rotatable lshaft at one end of said cylindrical casing, a head for closing the other end of the casing and one end of the screen, said head being mounted for ready attachment and detachment with respect to said cylindrical casing and fscreen, and said screen being mounted for ready attachment and detachment with respect to said casing, said shaft extending through said head, a bearing bracket for the extending part of said shaft, and means for mounting said hearing bracket so that it can be readily disengaged from said shaft, whereby the bearing bracket can be readily disengaged from the shaft, the head readily detached from the casing and screen and the screen readily withdrawn lengthwise through the open end of the casing.

A pulping machine comprising a horizontal substantially cylindrical casing,` a( cylindrical screen in said casing substantially co-axial therewith, means for feeding the material to be pulped to said screen, a rotatable shaft extending through said screen and casing and co-axial therewith, means mounted on said shaft and rotatable therewith for pulping the material in the screen and forcing it through the mesh thereof in the casing surrounding said screen, driving mechanism for said rotatable shaft at one end of said cylindrical casing, a head for closing the other end of said casing and one end of said screen, said head being mounted for, ready attachment and detachment with respect to said cylindrical casing `and screen, and said screen being mounted for ready attachment and detachment with respect to said casing, said shaft extending throughfsaid head, a bearing for the extending part of said shaft, means for mounting said bearing for sliding movement and also for swinging movement, whereby said bearing can be slipped off the extending part of said shaft, and swung laterally out of the way of said screen, whereby when said bearing and headv have beenl detached, said screen can be readily withdrawn lengthwise through open end of the casing.

A pulping machine comprising a horizontal substantially cylindrical casing, a cylindrical screen in saidV casing substantially co-axial therewith, means for feeding material to be pulped to said: screen, rotatable` means in said screen and codaxiai therewith for pulping the material in said screen, and forcing it through the mesh thereof .into the casing surrounding said screen, driving mechanism for said rotatable means at one end of said cylindrical casing,
a head fo-r closing the other end of said casing and one end of the screen, said head having a discharge opening therein for the refuse which is not forced through the mesh of screen, said head being mounted for ready attachment and detachment with respect to said cylindrical casing and screen, and said screen being mounted for ready attachment and detachment with respect to said casing,
whereby said head can be readily detached and said screen readily withdrawn lengthwise through the open end of casing.
16. A pulping machine comprising two sets of knives, the knives of one set co-operating with knives of the other set, to cut the material, means whereby the material is caused to pass between the twosets of knives, each set of knives being rotatably mounted, a cylindrical screen, means whereby the material is caused to pass from the `knives to said screen and rotatable means in said screen and co-axial therewith for pulping the material in the screen and forcing it through the mesh thereof, the axes of the two sets of knives and of the rotatable pulping means being parallel to each other.
