Be it known that I, Gnonen l Annnnorrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wooneocket, in the county of Providence, State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain. new and useful Improvement in Cap Bars for Roving and Spinning Frames, Etc,
oil. which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to the cap-bar devices oi roving and spinning machines, and the like, and more particularly to the socalled nebs which are mounted upon the cap-bar fingers of such devices. and used for keeping the top rolls of a set oidrawing rolls in proper working relations with the bottom rolls. j
iiheinvention comprises :nebs of novel and improved construction made oi sheet metal stamped and pressed to shape, and means for lining the same in the desired. adjusted positions upon the cap-bar lingers.

which are applied thereto. Ordinarily heretofore such nebs have been constituted of small metal blocks that are bored to fit upon the cap-bar finger 25, the said blocks having their lateral portions or ends formed with lateral grooves to receive the end-journals,

certain drawbacks and disadvantages which i the present invention obviates.
Nebs: constructed according'to the present invention are made of sheet metal. each of a single piece constituted b a blank stamped or punched from such material and bent by pressure into the required shape of nob. Each neb is formed with a top plate. 1. having a central hole 2; also with.
front and rear transversely extending); vertical walls 3, 3, parallel with each other,
having intermediately located holes 4, l,
ta-ngs 5, 5, extending down between the opposite pairs of lateral extensions or wings of the front and rear vwalls 3, 3 from the opposite sides of the top plate 1. The holes 4:, 4:, in the said walls are shaped and proportioned to receive within them a cap-bar linger 25, so as to enable the ueb to he slipped upon such finger. The distance from the under side of plate 1 down to the said holes is sufficient toaccommodate the thickness of a nut 6 interposed between said top plate and the top of the cap-bar finger, and occupying the space enclosed by the front and rear walls 3, 3, and. the opposite side-tangs 5, The said nut is one element of themeans for fixing. the neb in the desired adjusted position in the length of the finger. The other element of the said means is a screw 7,.the head of which is located above the plate 1 whilethe stem the eof extends down through central hole 2 ct said plate and through the nut (3, with its lower end resting upon the fiat top of the. cap-bar finger 25.
After a neb has been slipped into place upon a cap-bar finger 25 with the. corresponding nut 6 and screw 7 in proper assembled relation therewith; and also, with the said, screwentered into the said nut, the nebis fixedly secured at the desired point in the length of the finger 25 by turning down the screw 7 to cause its tip to bear against the top of the finger 25. The turning of the screw alsov causes the nut 6 to work upwardly upon the threaded stem of the screw so that the nut by pressing upwardly against. the underside of the top plate, 1 otthe neb raises the neb in its entirety, thereby causing the bottoms of the holes Al, 4:, in the vertical walls 3, 3, of the neb to take bearing against the under side of the finger. Through the engagement elf the top of the screw with the top of the finger 25 and of the bottoms of the said. holes 4, 4, with the under side oi the finger, the neb is effectually clamped in place. Adjusti'nent of the neb in the direction oi the length of the linger is readily accomplished by turning the screw to loosen the engagement with the linger, sliding the neb in the one'direction or the otheras required, and then tightening up the screw again.
The parallel lateral extensions or wings of the front .and rear walls 3, 3, form vertical front and rear guides between which the endejournals of the. top-rolls are received, and by which the top-rolls are restrained from loss of position either for wardly or rearwardly. The depending 7 rolls cooperate.
tangs 5, 5, form end guides or stops by which. the positions of the top-rolls lonn'itudinally are controlled.
As a means of supporting the front end oil. the cap-bar linger 25, to sustain the said linger when it is turned down into its working position shown in Fin. 1, 1 term tlm back-wall 3 of the neb oi the trout toproll with a rearwardly projecting ioot ill, Figs. 1, 6, and S, which is adapted to rest upon the elevatea'l rxar portion 2 2] of the support 22 for the if out bottom roll 23.

The invention remedies the drawbacks and disadvantages already rcferred to herein ol such nebs, and przwidcs improved nebs of less cost, greater accuracy of shape and proportions, and more comcompletely interchangeable upon the fingers upon which they are mounted than the solid machined nebs.
The accuracy and uniformity of shape which renders my nebs completely interchangeable is secured as a result oi iorminp them of sheet metal stamped to shape. The
saving in cost results from the fact that this process of manufacture is far less expensive than the usual processes involving cutting and machining comparatively heavy pieces of metal, and also provides for a much higher rate of production. Less highly trained and skilled workmen can be utilized for the manufacturing.
In the case of the production of nebs by cutting, machining, etc., bars and blocks of metal, various causes have resulted in inaccuracies in the grooved ends by which toproll journals are controlled. These inaccuracies sometimes involve want of'registration of the grooves at opposite ends ol :1 neb, from which results an improper positioning of one of the associated top-rolls upon the bottom rolls with which such top- That is to say, it the two grooves do not correspond with each other exactly in position, the longitudinal axis ol. one of the associated top-rolls may incline slightly in a direction from. front to rear in relation to the axis of the bottom roll upon which it rests. The outcome of this is greater compression and wear ol the intermediate portions of the top-roll bosses than ot the ends of such bosses, so that sometimes after the top-rolls have been taken away from the cap-bars, as on the occasions on which cleaning of the machine is effected. it iollows from failure to re-apply the top-rolls to exactly the same nebs with which they were combined previous to the removal. a top-roll boss will rest by its relatively enlarged end-portions upon the corresponding Leeann i {ll are all exactly alike when applied to the fingers 25. Hence, a top roll taken from its place in connection with one pair of the nebs and applied in connection with another pair thereof will work in its new position exactly as it did in its prior position,
because the accuracy of the form and proportions of the nebs, combined with accurate setting of the nebs upon the fingers 25, will enable each top roll to be placed and maintained in true working relations with the coresponding bottom roll by every pair of nelos towhich it may be applied, and hence when the top roll is shifted from one bottom roll to another by accident or design, no difference in the working relations will ensue.
What is claimed as the invention is,
1. In cap-bar devices for roving and spinning frames, a top-roll neb composed of a single piece of sheet metal stamped or pressed into shape and comprising a topplate; front and rear Walls having registering holes therethrough to receive a cap-bar finger, the said walls having also lateral extensions or wings constitutitng vertical guides for top-roll journals; and depending tangs between such walls constituting endguides for said journals.
2. In cap-bar devices for roving and spinnin frames, the combination with a neb according to claim 1, having a hole through its top-plate, of a nut occupying the enclosure of said walls and tangs, between the topplate and the top of a cap-bar finger, and a screw passing through the said hole and the nut and adapted to bear by its lower end. against the top of the cap-bar finger.
3. A top-roll neb according to claim 1, having a r'earwardly bent flange upon its rear wall constituting a foot adapted to support in working position a cap-bar finger and the nebs carried thereby.
