Be it known that l, ALL-nx L. VVooD, a citizen of the United States. residing.y at Beardstown, in the county of Cass and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain Doors for Freight Cars, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to a removable grain door for freight cars, and, more particularly to a grain door section having a grain release door and to means for retaining` the door section in position in the car door opening.
The object of my invention is to provide a grain door section which is simple in construction, durable, readily removable after the pressure of the grain within the car has been released from against it, and, which is provided with a sliding door for releasing the pressure of the grain within the car from against the grain door sections.
A further object of the invention is the provision of simple and durable door posts for supporting the grain door sections in position for closing the car door opening.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, arrangement and combina-- tion of parts hereinafter more fully den scribed and finally pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like characters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views:

In carrying out the aim of my present invention, I employ a pair of door posts each comprising a wooden post 1 to which is fixed a suitable metallic channel -iron member 2 by means of suitable fastening members 3. These two posts members 1 and 2 are further provided with a U-shaped metallic member 11 forming the inner face of each door post. These two door posts are fixed to the wall of the car upon each side of the car door opening 5 by means of suitable fazatening members as shown in Figs. 1 and 1. These posts are fixed to the inside face of the wall, as is manifest. These posts do not extend upward to the roof of the car, but only extend upward to a point where it will be possible to remove the door sections from between the posts by raising them, as is manifest from 3.
The grain door proper consists of a plurality of door sections 7 and 8. Only one door section 7 is employed while several door sections S may be employed according to their width.
The lower door section 7, which is removable, consists of a suitable board member, or members and is provided with a suitable opening 9, as shown in Fig. t. rllhe outer face of the door section 7 is provided with a pair of suitably spaced horizontally disposed channel iron members 10. These channel iron members are embedded in the outer face of the door section 7 so that t-he outer face of the flanges lie in a plane with the outer face of the door section. The members 10 are iixed to the door section by means of suitable fastening members 11 and the members serve to strengthen the door section 7 and to prevent warping thereof, as is manifest.
The door section 7 is provided with a metallic plate 12 having an opening 13 bounded by a rearwardly extending flange 14s receivable in the opening 9 of thc door section 7. The plate 12 is fixed to the door section 7 by means of suitable fastening members 15.
Extending forwardly from the upper and lower edges of the plate 12 are a pair of angular members 16 to provide the ways 17 for receiving `the sliding metallic door 18, which door acts as a closure for the grain release opening 13 when in its closed position. The door 18 is provided with a suitable staple shaped member 19 and the plate 12 provided at one end with a suitable hasp member 2O having an opening 21 to receive the staple member 19 when it is desired to seal the sliding door 18.
The removable door sections 7 and 8 are slidably held in the ways 22 of the opposed channel iron members 2 of the door posts. Each door section 7 is held from upward displacement from any cause by means of suitable removable lock pins 23, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. In assembling the door sections 7 and 8, the door section 7 is placed in position first and it rests upon the floor 24 of the car, as shown. After the door section 7 has been positioned, as many plain door sections 8 may be employed as desired to hold the grain within the car.
By the employment of a door section constructed in accordance with door section 7, it will be observed, that by using it as the lowermost door section, the pressure of the grain from within the car may be relieved against the door sections 7 and S so that they may be easily removed. his is accomplished by first manipulating the sliding door 18 of door section 7 so as to uncover the opening -13 of the door section 7 and allow a suitable amount of grain within the car to be rst discharged through this opening` 13 to relieve the pressure of the grain from against the inside face of door sections 7 and 8. After this pressure hasbeen relieved suiiciently, the door sections can be easily removed by being lifted upwardly in the ways 25 of the door posts, as is manifest.

rllhe many advantages of the hereindescribed invention will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
1 do not wish to be understood as having limited myself to the exact details of construction shown and described, but desire to have it understood that the invention I have shown in the drawings ismerely illustrative, as it ismanifest that various minor changes may be made in the form, shape and particular arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, hence 1 reserve the right to 'make any such changes, or modifications as may fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims when fairly construed.
ihat I claim is:
1. In a. grain door for freight cars having a side door opening'7 the combination of a pair of vertically disposed post members fixed to the inner face of the car wall in opposed relation adjacent each vertical side of the door opening and extending from the 4floor to a point somewhat below the upper edge of the door opening, a channeled guide member fixed to the inner side face of each post member to face vone another, a chann eled facing' member applied to the inner face of both the post member and channeled guide member with the flanges of said facing member engaging the exposed side faces of the post member and the channeled guide member, said facing member being held in position by means of fastening devices which pass through the post members for securing same to the wall of the car and both of said channeled members extending .to the top only of each post member, a plurality of grain door sections slidably mounted between said channeled guide members, one of said door sections being rovided with a 'relatively small centrally dpisposed open ing to act as a grain release section, a metallic plate having an opening fixed to .the outer face of said grain release ,door section, an integral flange directed rearwardly from said Aplate and receivable infthe opening of said door section for protecting the walls of said opening and adding rigidity to said door section, an upper and lower angular guide member extending from the outer face of said plate, a horizontally disposed grain release door slidably supported bymmeans of said guide member, and a pair of horizontally disposed channeled members embedded in the outer face of said release grain door section and fixed thereto, one of said channeled members being positioned above the grain release door plate and the other channeled member being positioned below said plate for reinforcing said door to preventl warping thereof and the aforesaid first mentioned channeled guide membersv and ,facing members being providedy with an opening for each door section for receiving a lock pin adapted to pass through an opening at `the ends of each door section to prevent upward displacement of the door section until the lock pins have been withdrawn from the openings.
2. In a grain door for freight cars having a. side door opening, the combination of a pair of vertically disposed ypost inembers fixed to the inner facie ofthe car wall in opposed relation adjacent each vertical side of they door opening and extending from the floor to a kpoint somewhat below the upper edge of the door opening, a channeled guide member fixed tothe inner side face of each post member to face one another, a. channeled facing member applied to the inner face of both the post member and channeled guide member withlthe flanges of said facing member engaging the exposed side faces of the post member and the channeled guide member, said facing member being' held in position by means of fastening devices which pass through the post members for securing samefto the `wall of the car and both of said channeled members extending to the top only ofea-cli post member, said post and channeled members being arranged for slidably and 'removably supporting a plurality of'grain' door sections to the rear of the car door openmg.
