BENCH BLOCK.
Application filed October 27, 1921. Serial No. 510,995.
T 0 @ZZ w hom t may concern Be it lrnovvn that l, ARTHUR H. Srnnnn'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at i-rthol, in the county of 1lWorcester, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain neufv and useful Improvements in Bench Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to machinists bench blocks and has for its object to provide a simple and convenient article of this character.
The construction of my bench block, together With a selected embodiment Which has been found satisfactory in use and Well adapted to the requirements of manufacture,
is described and illustrated in the accompanying specification and drawings,
throughout Which like reference characters are correspondingly applied, and the ycharacteristic features of novelty are particularly pointed out in the appended claims. ln the drawings:
Fig. l is a plan view of a bench block in accordance With my invention,
`Fig. 2 is a section on the line lil-4H, Fiff. l, and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
.My bench block consists of a 'casting having a flat horizontal top l and a depending annular rim 2. lThe depth of the rim is suiiicient to dispose the top of the bench block at some little distance above the bench or other surface upon which the blocl; rests. Preferably the rim 2 is lrnurled or otherwise roughened, as indicated at 8 to facilitate handling the block.
Let vertically through the top of the block is a plurality of holes 4.- of different diameters. These holes may be spaced about the top of the block in any manner, but are preferably arranged in the symmetrical manner disclosed in Fig. l. intersecting certain of the holes is a diametrical centering groove 5, preferably `vshaped as indicated in Fig. 3.
My block has avery Wide field of utility and is adapted to a great variety of operations ivhich it facilitates and improves. For all operations such as the driving in or driving out of pins of either flat or round Work or for removing collars or rings or stripping other pieces of Work, the block is of the greatest assistance. This is especially true Where an operation is being performed on a iinished piece of Work which must not be scarred or marred. The intersection of the groove 5 with the three sizes of holes makes it possible to or remove a pin from a. finished cylindrical object without danger of having its slip or dent, While the predominant `Hat top of the block will support any flat object. The block can be used flat on the bench or can be clamped by its lrnurling in a vise Where rods or pins of greate.' length than the depth of the skirt makes it necessary. lli/*hen used flat on the bench the cavity at the bottom of the block acts as a retainer for pins or other small parts which may be driven through and which might otherwise fly out and become lost.
The above uses are merely set forth as suggestive as each mechanic according to the variety and nature of his ivorl; and his own manner of doing it Will utilize the possibilities atiorded by the combinations of Hat and inclined surfaces with the apertures of various sizes and the ability to Work on and through the block.
Various modifications in the form and construction of my device may obviously be sorted to all Without departing from the spirit of my invention if Within the limi ts of the appended claims.
1i/Vhat l therefore claim and desire to sec-ure by Letters Patent is l. A. bench bloei; having a horizontally disposed top and a depending annular riin providing a continuous edge upon which he block may stand upright upon a support with its top spaced from the support, and said top having a plurality of openings let vertically therein and of different diameters, said rim conining any articles projected through said openings into the space beneath the top.
2. A bench block having a horizontally disposed top and a depending annular rim providing a 'continuous edge upon which the block may stand upright upon a support with its top spaced from the support, said top having a plurality of openings let vertically therein and of different diameters and having a groove extending diametrically thereacross and intersecting certain of said openings.
3. A bench block having a horizontally dis )osed ton and a de ending annular rim providing continuous edge upon which mea-ns of which the block may be readily 10` the bleek may stand upright upon a suplifted. port with its top spaced from the support, In testimony whereof I ax my signature said top having a. plurality of openings let in presence of two Witnesses.
5 `vertically therein and of different diameters and having a Lf-shaped groove extending ARTHUR HERMONE STRRETT' diametri'cally thereaeross and intersecting Witnesses: certain of said openings, said rim being vV/fLLIAivI E. CRAMER, roughened to provide a finger grasp by WALTER L. MAYHEW.
