LOM PTCKJEIR-RETATNTNG DEVICE.
.application tiled May 9, 1922.
if 'o ctt fac/tom c' may conce/Mt lie .it known that l, lloiuunn ll. liannoiv, a citizen oit the United States, residing" at lledhani, in the colmty olf Norfolk, tltate ot' ll/lzissacliusetts, have invented a certain new and 'us-tol improvement in Loom Picker- Retaining lhiviees, oi which, the following is a specification, roterence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.`
'il/[y intention has relation to devices ot the class designed 'for retaining or assisting' in retaining' Aj'iichers in proper Working1 posi'- tion upon the piclrersticks oit looms. lt has tor its objet the provision oli a positive, sirnple. and inexpensi ve device by means of vwhimh iooseness and play ot' a picker oit loop Atorni relative to the jjiiclrei'sticlr upon which it mounted, the tearing' loose et the-picker 'trom its customary securing screw, and the Working oit the piclrer out o't' its proper place upon "the picker-stick, shall be prevented.
'llie common type ot' loop picker which 'is illustrated Ain the accompanying drawings has been :tound to worlr loose upon the screw commonly employed for securing' it in place upon a pi.cltersticln or even to tear away tlieri-rtrom, under the severe poundingr action to whichit is subjected by the shuttle. This is due to the rlctlectingor tilting action oit the tip of the shuttle with which it cooperates, resultingq from such tip strikingr one portion or another ott the inclined sides ot the conical hole which 'forms .in the tace ot the piclrer, the said tip striking;n new high, now low, or at the r'orvvard side or rearward side ol' the said depression and tending to twist the picker on its picker-stick in the corresponding direction. Also, the usual piclrer-securing` screw sometimes Works out, permitting the picker to shift .its position or be thrown clit.
illy invention comprises essentially a picker-retainer comprising a metal strip having' at one end a. bend flaring' away from the pickeosticlr, and a reverse bend, the extremity adjacent such latter bend being arranged to take against the back` ot the piclreisticlr; pret'erably terminating at such extremity in a point or points adapted to be "l "yen into the pickersticlr.

screw, and also by an illustrative embodinient of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view oi said illustrative embodiment.
Having reference to the drawingsf* The picker l is a loop picker of common type and construction7 comprising a plurality of layers 4l of` leather and a filler-piece 2 which also may be of heavy leather. The loop of the picker adapts it, as usual, to encircle the pickerfstick 3. A screw 5 is shown as driven through the plies 4-1 at the back ot the loop, and into `the picker-stick; at the .back thereof', such screw being a means usually employed in prior practice tor retaining the `picker'in place.
The improveddevice Which l provide for securing a loop picker in place upon picker-stick, and for taking up looseness and pla-y ot the picker upon a picker-stick, coinprises in its present embodiment a strip oit metal 6 adapted to be driven in between the lback ot the piclrer-stick 3 and the adjacent inner surface ol theloop of the picker, that is, in contact with the inner of the plies all. The lower end of the device is formed `with a chisel edge Gl to facilitateentering the strip between the piclrer-sticlrand the loop in applying it in the case o't a tightlydittino; picker Without injury to the picker-stick or the .loop oi'.= the piclrer.
T form the upper end oi' my picker-retaining device with a portion 62 which is bent at an inclination relative to the plane of the lower portion of the device, so that when the device is applied as in Fig. l, at the back of a picker-stick such portion 62 dares away from the pickereticlr. lli terminal portion 63 adjoining.;` said portion 62 is bent at an acute angle with the portion 62, so that it lies atright angles, or it may be only approximately so, to the line ot the main part of the device, and f :orrespondingly to the rear face of the pickerstick.. This portion 63 affords a face easily struck by a hammer in driving' the pickerretainer down into position. This portion 63 is adapted to engage at its free extreinity with the back ot the picker-stick. Pret erably, the said extremity is provided with one or more points 64 to enter the material of `the piclrer stiel( 3. Tn applying' the device, atter it has been driven down along the back oit' the picker-stick until it has ico arrived at the desired position, fitting tightly in betweenithe back of the `pickerstick and the loop of the picker, a blow of the hammer against the outstanding angle above the loop of the picker then serves to embed the point or points 64 in the wood, where they are held by the stillness orf the metal strip. This engagement of the point or points with the picker-stick prevents displacement upwardly of the picker-retainer 6, while the outwardly bent portion 62 precludes the possibility7 ot the picker rising upon the picker-stick. The entry ot the ontharing inclined portion between the picker-stick and the inside or the loop serves as described to wedge the loop lirmly upon the pickerfstick.
In the present embodiment of my invention, I have shown the picker-retainer provided with a hole 65 through which the pieker-retaining screw passes to reach the wood. As this screw often worls out of the wood, as stated hereinbefore, especially so after it been turned out and replaced a few times in renewing the picker, l contemplate in some instances a provision 'for further security in the form of a serewthread in the hole 65 to engage the thread of screw and serve somewhat as a loclrnnt to prevent its working loose.
Since my picker-retaining device acts independently of the picker-retaining screw 5 and is adequate to hold the A iclrer on, may in some cases dispense with the said screw 5 or equivalent means, using my device a lone to retain the picker.
Vhat l claim is 1. The combination with a picker-stick, a loop picker mounted thereon, and a pickersecuring` screw, of a picker-retainer com- Qrising` 1a metal. strip interposed between the said picker-stick and picker, having at its upper end a bend liaring away from the picker-stick, and a reverse bend, terminating in a point or points adapted to be 'forced into engagement with the pickerestick.
2. The vcombination with a. picker-stick,
a. loop picker mounted thereon, and a pickersecuring screw, ot a picker-retainer coniprising a metal strip having at one end a bend flaring away from the picker-stick. and a reverse bend terminating in a point or points adapted to be driven into the picker-stick, and a hole to acconnnodato the picker-sccuring screw.
3. The combination with a picker-stick. a loop picker mounted thereon, and a pickcrsecuring screw. ot a picker-retainor coinprising: a metal strip having at one end a bend flaring away from the picker-stick. and a reverse bend terminating .in a point or points adapter to he driven into the picker-stick, and a hole provided with a screw-thread to engage with the said pickerretaining screw.
il. The combination with a picker-stick, a loop picker mounted thereon, and a` pickersecuring screw, ot a picker-retainer coniprisingv a metal strip having at onei end a bend flaring away 'from the picker-stick. and a reverse bendI` tcrn'linatinnr in a point or points adapted to he driven into theI pickerstick.
The combination with a pickewstick. and a loop picker mounted thereonl` of a pieher-retainer comprisinglr a metal strip having at one end a. bend flaring away from the pickerfiitick, and a reverse bend. termin@ ng; in a point or points adapted to be driven into the @cker-stick.
t?, The combination with a. picker-Stich, and a loop picker `mounted thereon. of a piclear-retainer comprising' a` metal strip haring at one end a bond flaring awaiY from the picker-:stick and a` reverso bend. terminating in an ond which takes against the hack ot the picker-stick.
ln testimony whereof l aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
lilitnesses Cintas. F. RANDALL, ELLEN O. SPRING.
