To 'alliw'zomt may` co'ncema Beit knovv'n that I, HAROLD BLYn, a citizen ofthe United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hardware Constructions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will -enable others skilled in the art to which lit appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a hardware construction, being particularly concerned with a novel construction and method of making the same which is applicable in many places in different hardware articles of manufacture. For instance, the present invention is concerned with the attachment of a cylindrical sleeve to a face platesuch as is u sed in locksand latches, one example of which is shown in Patent No. 1,327,695, issued J an.
13 cation Ser. No. 970,936, filed Jan. is, 1919. In each, a cylindrical sleeve is attachedto a face plate which is adapted to set against a vertical edge -of adoor, the sleeve having the lock or latch housing connected therewith. My invention has for its primary object and purpose, a novel and particularly eective means of attachmentof the sleeve and plate, whereby an opening for the passage of the latch or lo'ck bolt is made in the face plate, and an especially secure connection of the sleeve and plate made which requires no cutting away or polishing away of projectin parts in order to make a smooth and finished article', and in which the vconnecting joint between the vparts is of exceptional strength. Various otherobjects and purposes than those above enumerated will appear fully and in detail as understanding of the invention is had from the following description, taken in 4connection with the accompanying drawing, in which, p'
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the connected sleeve and face plate, taken from the rear and to one side thereof.
Fig. 2 isa transverse section through the plate and sleeve.
Fig. 3 is `a longitudinali section therethrough. i i y Fig. 4: is a rear elevation of the connected plate and sleeve, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the plate alone before attachment of the sleeve, the
1920, and another in my pending appliview being tal'env` from `the rear and to one side'fof-fthesame. y
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figuresV of the drawing. The face plate 1 is of the usual'form, bemg rectangular in outline and relatively thm. Between its ends, at substantially its middle an annular flange 2 is made extendmg to the rear, there being an opening 4 made through the plate around which the flange` 2 is located. Adjacent each end of the plate an opening 3 is made for the passage `of screws or other equivalent securing devices for attaching the plate to a door at its free vertical'edge.
The sleeve 5 has an inner diameter somewhat greater than the outer diameter of flange 2 and at one end is pressed or spun inwardly as indicated at 6, so that the openmg at such. end of the sleeve is but'little larger than the outer diameter of fia-nge 2. The sleeve is placed over the flange. anda punch brought against the ilange at oppo site sides thereof, the effect of which is to divide the iiange into fourv parts', two of which, indicated at 7 are crushed and bent outwardly against the inturned end 6 of the sleeve, while the other parts 4 remain in position to serve as guides for the lock or latch bolt. The parts 7 are at opposite sides of the flange, and the parts 2a between them are also at opposite sides as shown.
With the above described construction, a
very secure connection. of the sleeve andv structure coming within the scope thereof.
I claim: f
1. In combination a at metal plate having an opening therein with a flange struck and projecting from the plate around the opening, and a sleeve formed atone end with an inturned portion which is located around the flange, parts of said flange being pressed rvagainst the inturned portion of the sleeve'to permanently secure the sleeve to the plate, substantially as described.
2. In combination, a iat plate having an opening therethrough and a flangevstrucky and projecting from the plate around-the opening, and a sleeve formed at one end withl an inturned curved portion which 1s located around the iange, the flange being pressed against said intnrned portion y ot the sleeve to permanently secure theeleeve to the pla-te, substantially as described. ,y
3. In combination, a flat plate having an opening ytherein Wit-h a flange projecting from the. plate around the opening, said Linnea flange being divided vertically at a plurality of separated points, and a sleeve formed at one. end With-an intuined portion which is located around the flange, sepaiated parts of the ange' being pressed against the iny turned portion of the sleeve to permanently secure the ysleeve to the plate andthe remaining parts of the flange extending into the sleeve, substantially as and for the purposes described. ln 'testimony wher-eet I atlix my signature.
