EMERGENCY OPENER FOR C A-R DOORS.V
Application ledvMarch 10, 1919'. Serial No. 281,626.
To all eu/lofm, tf/nay concern: v Be it known that l, Lnii iYNias, a citizen ot the UnitedStates, residing at Albany,
in the county ot Albany and State ot' Neiv forli, have invented certain new and lusetul improvements in Emergency Gpeners tor (lar loors, the following beingat'uli, clear, and exact disclosure ot the one :torni otvmy invention which l at present deem preferable.r
F or a detailed description of the present form ot my invention, reference may be had` to the following vspecification and to theaccompanying drawing forming a partrthereof, wherein F ig. l is a side view ot my construction; F ig. 2 is a section on line .2f-2 ot' Figui; Figs. 3, i and 5 show details. My invention relates to car. ated by a motor and is for the purpose of opening such a' door in the event ot the motor being disabled and the door thereby left in a locked condition. l l
Referring to the drawing, A' represents the Sliding door and B1 B2 the walls of the recess in which the door moves.`y C isv the door-motor and D isthe ordinary,door-op-` erating arm extending radially from the mo-` tor shaft. This arm is jointed to a blockvl arranged to slide on a rod F secured to and parallel to the rear edge of the door. Inthe use of such an arrangement the door, when closed, is locked in that position by the arm D'which, in its door-closing operation, comes vdown nearly to a horizontal position, so that the baclrthrust of the` door is transmitted through the arm to the motor shaft with no eifective tendency to rotate the arm backward. It the motor becomes disabled when in this condition 'the door will be permanently locked and, to meet that contingency, I rovide the following expedient: To lthe inside of the wall B1 l attach a sortoidouble barrelled sheathing H, the same being stamped out ot sheet metal with a flat back adapted to rest against the wall and be secured thereto by means of rivets 7L, as appears inFig. 2. Un the front side the metal sheet is bent up as appears in Fig. 5` to form the two parallel barrels or tubes g. Within the flat portion of the casing H slides a lifter G, the lower end of which is bent at rightangles to form a hook which normally stands just below the arm D as appears in Figs. l and 2. ln the two barrels are coiled springs torc ?e 'the lifter downward into its Ainactive 2 `position with itshookedfend underneath thev doors oper- A 1,440,605 PnTFiaT'fn-- K which at their upperends abut against a Y pin L which passes through both of the bar.-
-rels while at their lowerends the springs bear` against'blocks O which are riveted to!` the litter Gr and which rest againstga, stop` rivet P which passes through'bothloarrelsv llilre the rivet L. Obviously, whentheparts areV in their normal condition, the springs K door-operating arm D, To the upper end of the lifter is secured a rod R 'and to the upper end of'this rodgare attachedtwo chains@1L Si; y
whichpass over pulleys secured inthe re-` handles 'll-1 T2., one ot which is'inside and the i other outside .of the walls ,of the car. Inthe event oft the door motor being disabled, as l i heretofore described, itis'onlynecessarymto y reach up and pull one ofthe ballhandles Tf T? which will f'draw up thef'flitter G against the torce of the-springs Kandtheref;v` l by raise` thearm D-out ot its locking position. l,Then thedoor. can :be moved lback by.l hand, the arm fD. being now free to yieldrtof' door. y
lWhat I claim as new anddesire to secure y y byLetters Patent is :L I
