Description

N. A. ELLIN.
CLASP. F1 LED APR. 24, 1922.
lllgllllll INVENTOR. MM 425@ ATTORNEY Patented Dee. 2d, i922.
,hasta y NICHOLAS A. ELLIN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE lISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO EKELUND BRGTHEBS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, A FIRM.
CLASP.
Application filed April 24,
To all 'Lofi/0m t may concerti.'
.Be it known that l', Nici-roms A.. ELLIN, a citizen of the llnited States, residing at Providence, y.in the county ot Providence and 5 State ot' Rhode lsland, have invented certain new and use'lul lmprovements in Clasps, oit which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a clasp for necklaces rand other articles `of jewelry, and has for its essential objects the prevention ot complete detachment ot the clasp parts when the parts are accidentally partially disen-` gaged, and to the attainment ot this end in an inexpensively constructed, strong, sightlyk device.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and in such combinations ot parts as tall within the scope ot the appended claim.
ln the accompanying drawings which torni a part oit this syriecilication,
lligures l, 2, and 3 are a iront elevation, ay rear elevation, and a plan view respectively o1c a clasp embodying my invention,
'Figures 4l and 5, sectionson line l--l olf `Figure 3, showing the parts in locked and .in semiengaged positions resigiectively, and
Figure 6, a section on line 6-6 ot llligure 5.
Like reference characters indicate` like parts throughout the views. In its present and preferred form of embodiment my invention comprises a housing casing 8 comprising a iront wall 9, a rear wall l0, and an elliptical periphery or side wall ll uniting the same.
ll ast to oneend ci the casing 8 by sclde` or otherwise is an attaching ring 13. At the other casing end is a slot l5 in the side ll. 40 This slot isi contnnious with a longitudinal opening); 16 in the rear wall communicating centi-elly ot a transverse opening i7. The openings .lll and 17 constitute a T shaped slot, y
The locking member 19 of the clasp comprises a transverse strip 20 centrally of whose edge extend two normally spaced laterally resilient preferably diverging arms 2l 1922.` Serial No. 556,218.
having upon their tree ends lateral lingers 23, upon one of which is an attaching ring 24C. The parts 20', 2l, 23,and 24e are integrally connected and cut from a single thin metal blank. The laterally projecting lockingstrip 2O is initially insertable into the casing by passing 'through the opening ll which is narrower than the strip but of slightly greater length. Hence in inserting thev strip the arm Ql'must be disposed at an angle tothe plane ot the back' 10. Alfter the portion 2O` enters the casing the arms 2l next moved into the plane of the casing through the slot 16, which is slightly broader than the combined width ot the arms, and into slot l5. lllhe member 19 is next pushed inwardly through the slot l5 whereby the arms 21 are compressed by the bounding edges 27 oit the side wall until said edges snap `into the notches 26, whereby the parts are retained in locked position.
Il the parts are accidentally detached such detachment is incomplete as shown in Figure 5, because the strip 2() engages the interior ot the side wall ll. The lingers 23 are manually compressed where itis sought to` detach the parts, and a reversal ci the above described steps completely separat/es the clasp parts.
l claim ln ajewelry clasp, a casing comprising a Jfront wall, a back wall provided with a T shaped slot, and a peripheral wall provided with a transverse slot registering with the first slot, and a locking member comprising a transverse strip within the casing, laterally yielding arms integral with one lateral edge of the str-ip slidable through the transverse` slot andprovided with lateral notches adapted to receive portions or' the peripheral wall bounding said slot, hlngers on the rtree ends ot' the arms, an attaching ring supported by one of the arms, and au attaching ring on the casing.
ln testimony whereof l have affixed my signature.
NICHOLAS A. ELLIN.
