Description
Patented ec. 19,l i922.
UNITED STATES PATENT' OFFICE.
PAIUL E. HOHL, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
INCNDESCENT nm.
Application led May 4, 192,1.
and useful Improvements in Incandescent Lamps, of which I hereby decla-re the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Thel objects of the invention are-to provide means .for constructing 4the bulb of an incandescent lamp, and specifically relate to a bulb, the attaching extremity of which, adjacent to the socket end, is separated into two portions, to facilitate the insertion' and renewal of the filament.
One of these portions contains the column to which the filaments are attached, and the other portion includes the globular outer extremity of the bulb.
rIhe invention is particularly designed to provide a bulb for enclosing a column to which metallic filaments are attached which require a large bulb that must be attached to a relatively small socket, andA also includes a dome portion having a dome reduced extremity to which the socket is attached, and means for detachably securing and hermetically sealing the said dome portion to the outer or bulb portion.
The invention and its mode of construc tion are hereinaftermore fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In these drawings Fig. l, is a side elevation of the invention; Fig. 2, is an end elevation showing the socket dome, and bulb; Fig. 3, is a longitudinal section enlarged showing the dome, and its reduced extremity, the sockets and the screw threaded extremities of the dome and the bulb and sealing means therefor.
In these views A. is the bulb portion, which is provided with the screw threaded attaching extremity B, which is slightly' drawn in at the line of connection with the bulb to form an annular shoulder C.'
D, is the screw threaded metal socket of standard size which is smaller in diameter than the attaching extremity of the bulb, and E, is the dome, to the reduced extremity E of which the glass column, F, and rod G, are secured. To these the filaments H, are attached.
seran No. 466,764. l
The reduced lextremity of the dome is annularly recessed at I, and the annular edge of the metal socketis inserted in the recess and retains the dome in place, J and K are the leading in wires attached in the usual manner.
The dome is provided. with a screw threaded portion L, of less diameter than the screw threaded portion of the bulb and spaced' therefrom.
The dome is provided with a projecting fiange orl projecting annular'shoulder M,
and whenA the parts are assembled, a thin metal screw threadedtsleeve N, is first secured over the screw threaded portion the glass dome, and the screw threaded portion of the glass bulb, is secured over it.
An exterior screw threaded band or sleeve O, is first passed over .the outer side of the screw threaded portion of the bulb, washers P and Q are positioned upon the shoulders upon the dome and the bulb.
rlfhe washers are composed of soft resilient material preferably heat resisting, and when the parts are screwed together the edges of the glass-and metal portions make air tight joints therewith.
The washers can be coated with some cementing material such as lead'paste or thin rubber cement to prevent the atmospheric pressure from forcing air into the bulb. This coating may extend along the screw threaded portions if desired.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with a bulb, said bulbI provided with a screw threaded portion open at its inner end, of a separate dome therefor, said -dome provided with a filament carrying column, said dome provided with a screw threaded portion of less diameter than that of the screw threaded portion of said bulb, and spaced therefrom, and also pro vided with an external annular shoulder, a thin metal screw threaded sleeve mounted upon the screw threaded portion of said dome, the screw threaded portion of said bulb, being mounted upon said sleeve, and an enclosing screw threaded metal sleeve mounted upon said screw threaded portion of said bulb.
2. The combination with a bulb, said bulb provided with a screw threaded portion open at its inner end, of a separate dome therefor, said dome provided with a filament carrying column, said dome provided with a` screw threaded portion of less diameter than that of the screw threaded portion of said bulb, and spaced therefrom, and also provided with an external annular shoulder, a thin metal screw threaded sleeve mounted upon the screw threaded portion of said dome, the screw threaded portion of said bulb, being mounted upon said sleeve, and an enclosing screw threaded metal sleeve mounted upon said screw threaded portion of said bulb, said bulb being provided with an annular shoulder adjacent to the screw threaded portion thereof.
3. The combination with a bulb, said bulb provided with a screw threaded portion open at its inner end, of a separate dome therefor, said dome provided with a filament carrying column, said dome provided with a screw threaded portion of less diameter than that of the screw threaded portion of said bulb, and spaced therefrom, and also provided with an external annular shoulder, a thin metal screw threaded sleeve mounted upon the screw threaded portion of said dome, the screw threaded portion of said bulb, being mounted upon said sleeve, and an enclosing screw threaded metal sleeve mounted upon said screw threaded portion of said bulb, said bulb being provided with an annular shoulder adjacent to the screw threaded-portion thereof, hereinafter mentioned and resilient washers secured upon said hereinbefore mentioned shoulders.
4. In a divided lamp, a bulb provided with a screw threaded portion, a separate dome therefor said dome provided with a corresponding screw threaded portion, a screw threaded metal sleeve interposed between the screw threaded portions of said bulb and dome and an external sleeve, said dome provided with an annular attaching means, and a socket secured to said annular attaching means.
5. In a divided lamp, a bulb provided with a screw threaded portion, a separate dome therefor said dome provided with a corresponding screw threaded portion, a screw threaded metal sleeve interposed between the screw threaded portions of said bulb and dome and an external sleeve, said -dome provided with an annular attaching means, and a socket secured to said annular attaching means, said attaching means upon said dome being of less diameter than that of the screw threaded portion of'said dome.
6. In a divided lamp, a bulb provided with a screw threaded portion, a separate dome therefor said dome provided with a corresponding screw threaded portion, a shoulder upon one member against which the other member abuts, and a metallic screw threaded reinforcing sleeve for the said screw threaded portions of said bulb and dome.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto set hand this 23d day of April, 1921.
PAUL E. HOHL.
In presence of- WVM. M. Mormon, CHAS. F. Siria.
