I Application fileddMay s, i922. Serial no. 559,402
To all wlzomit may concern: The inventiouwill be further described Be it known that I, HERBERT RAND Fnirri, with the, aid of the accompanying drawing a citizen of the Dominion of New Zealand, wherein I i and residing at ArawaStreet, Birkenhead, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the 55 Aucklanchin the Provincial District of Auckimproved bucket or piston, while a land, have invented certaiunew and useful Figure 2 is a part plan view and part Improvements in Pump Buckets or Pistons, seetionalplan view of same, the part section of which the following is a specification. being takenon theline AA, Figure 1.
This invention relates to buckets and pis- Figure 3 is an elevation of the locking pin 60 tons of pumps, engines and the like, and its or stop; I
object is to provide an improved construction The bucket or piston comprises an eX- ,1 thereof, capable of being expeditiously and ternally screwed boss, 1, formed, with a accurately adjusted, with comparative ease, flange 2, and secured on the rod 3by any in cylinders, barrels and the like. approvedimeans. V e
According to the invention, rings capable An inverted cone or tapered ring 4 screws of expansion are placed around segment onto the externally threaded boss 1, and is which encircle an inverted cone or a tapered encircled by segments 5 which in turn are ring the latter screwing onto an externally surrounded by expansible rings 6. threaded boss. This boss is formed integral The lowermost expanding rings 6 and seg- 20 with that portion of the bucket or piston, a ments 5 are held between the flange 2 on the fixture on the bucket or piston rod, the latter boss 1 and an intermediate solid or non-ex being secured in said boss. paneling ring 7 surrounding the inverted The expanding rings and the segments cone or tapered ringet, whilethe uppermost are held between a flangeon the fixed porexpanding ring 6 and segments 5 are held 25 tion of thebucket or piston and solid nonbetween the intermediate ring? and an upexpanding rings. 1 I P Solid g -i a Bolts screwed into the aforesaid flange l 8 which S w 0' the gfi T I pass through the solid rings and also pass th oug the solid r g 7 a d 7a and through radial slots, or holes in the segments th rough radial slots 9 in-the segments 5 and 3o elongated radially of the bucket or piston, are providedwith adjusting nuts 10 adapted Adjusting nuts on the bolts are recessed to lie, in recesses 11in. the upper or outer into the uppermost or outer solid rings. non-expanding ring '7'. i l i p The inverted cone or tapered ring, the en 'lhe inverted cone or tapered ring t, the I ternal diameter of which decreases towards external diameter of which decreases to- 35 the flange on the fixed "portionot the bucket :wardsthe flange 201; the boss 1, has its outer or piston, has its outer surface formed with surface termed with two or more separate a number of separate tapered portions tapered portions 12, each of which is eneach of which is encircled by a separate set circled by a separate set of segments 5.

The pin it is held in position by means of a screw or nut 17 which secures the flat portion 14 of the stop 14 to the upper or outer end of the inverted cone or tapered ring 4L. i I
To expand the ringsf6, the inverted coneor tapered ring dis unlocked from the upper or outer ring 7 by removing the stop ltfrom out of the registering recesses l and16,

Upon the desired adjustment being made the stop pin 14 is inserted in registering recesses 15 and 16 and secured, thereby locking theinverted coneiet against turning on the boss '1, while the nuts 10 on the bolts 8 are tightened to clamp the parts together.
If desired more than'two'expanding rings 6 and sets of segments 5 can be employed, additional non-expandingrings 7 being provided, in order that each ring and set of segments 5 will be located between two nonexpanding rings or between a non-expanding ringand the flange 2.
WV hat I do clai'm'and desire to obtain by LettersPatent ofthe United States of Amer-v ica 1s:
1. A pump bucket or piston comprising a fixed portion with-a flange thereon; a tapered ring screwing onsaid fixed portion; a non-expanding ring; a' ring of expansible material "enclosing 'segments which surround the taperedring; and means for clamping the nonfexpanding ring, the expansiblering,
the segments and the flange together.
2. A pump bucket or piston, comprising a fixed portion with aflange thereon; a tapered ring screwing on said'fixed portion; a v non-expanding ring; a ring of expansible material enclosing segments which surround the tapered ring, and which contain radial slots bolts screwin into said flan e and passing through said radial slots and the non-expanding r1ng;'and nuts on sand bolts outside the non-expanding ring. I
A pump bucket or piston comprising a fixed portion with a flange thereon; a ring having two ormore tapered portions, screwing on said fixedportion; rings of expansible material enclosing sets-of segments which surround said tapered portions, and contain radial slots; non-expanding rings between said sets of segments and between the expansible rings; an outer non-expanding ring; bolts screwing into said flangeand passing through said radial slots and the non-expanding rings, and nuts on said bolts outside the outer of the latter.
i. A pump bucket or piston comprising an vexternallythreaded fixed boss with a flange at one end; a tapered ring screwing on said fixed" boss a ncn erpanding ring surrounding said tapered ring; a ring of expansible material between said non-expanding ring and said flange segments containing radial slots, enclosed by said expansible ring and surrounding said tapered ring; bolts and nuts tor clamping the flange, the expansible ring the nonexpanding ring and the segments together; andcmeans fitted to the tapered ring for preventing turning movement of same on'said boss.
5. A pump bucket or piston comprising a fix edportion with a fiange thereon; a tapered ring with a verticalrecessin its outer edge screwing on said fixed portion; anonexpanding ring with vertical recesses in its inner edge; a ring of expansible material enclosing segments-which surround the tapered ring; a fitting secured to the tapered ring having a downwardly projecting pin ,taining vertical recesses in its inner edge;
and a fitting provided with a pin adapted to be-inserted in a hole formed by the recess in the tapered ring registering with a recess in the non expanding ring. 7
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence or two witnesses.
