DOVZELING MACHINE.
Application filed August 13, 1921. Serial No. 492,023.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FVALTER J. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doweling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to doweling machines and more particularly to an apparatus to be used by wood workers for boring two holes at one setting in a manner that will cause the holes to be accurately located.
Another object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character which will have adjustable guide blocks provided with a series of holes whereby the blocks may be moved to aline the holes for causing the drills to be properly centered whereby the holes in the work will be properly located.
()ther objects of the invention will appear upon consideration of the following detail description and accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a transverse section,
Figure 3 is a plan view,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the adjustable guide blocks,
Figure 5 is a detail section through one edge of the structure.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the plate 1 is rectangular in formation and is provided at one edge with a longitudinal slot 2 within which an adjustable bracket 3, is mounted, the bottom of the slot 2 being equipped with a longitudinal opening to receive a fastening bolt 4 having a knurled head 5 and a removable nut 6 whereby the bracket 3 may be fastened in position on one edge of the bed plate. The bracket 3 as will be noted in Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawing is provided with a right angularly extending portion 7 having a dove tailed groove 8 adapted to receive one of the guide blocks 9 which is equipped with a dove tailed tongue 10 adapted to fit the groove 8 so that the block 9 may be vertically adjusted. The block 9 is provided with a series of holes ranging from one-quarter of an inch in diameter to one-half inch in diameter and these holes serve to guide the drill used for forming the dowel hole. The
upstanding vertical portion 7 of the bracket is connected to a retaining bar ll'which has one end mounted in a guide member 12 equipped with a set screw 13 whereby the retaining member 11 may be held in the desired position after the guide block 9 has been set. Adapted for co-operation with the guide block 9 is a complementary guide block is which is disposed in reverse position with respect to the guide block 9 and, as shown in Fig. 1, the openings are graduated in the opposite direction and the block is mounted in a supporting bracket 15 equipped with the dove tailed groove adapted to receive the tongue 16 on the guide block 14-. Set screws 1? are employed to secure the block in adjusted position.
It will be noted that the two blocks 9 and let are beveled on their proximate faces so that relative adjustment of the two blocks 9 and 14 will dispose the guide holes in the proper position for guiding the drill.
Suitable graduations are provided for permitting the user to measure the distances whereby accurate work may be performed. The longitudinal slot may be employed in connection with a movable slide 18 against which the work may be placed when the machine is in use.
The upper end of the bracket 15 is provided with a lug 19 through which a turn screw 20 is extended, the latter being provided wit-h a hand wheel 21 whereby the turn screw may be vertically adjusted. The lower end of the turn screw is equipped with a clamp plate 21 for holding the work in position when the drilling is being accomplished.
What is claimed is j 1. An apparatus of the character described comprising a bed plate, brackets mounted upon the bed plate, one of the said brackets being adjustable toward and away from the other bracket, each bracket having its approximate face provided with a groove, vertically adjustable guide blocks mounted in the said grooves, each guide block being provided with a series of standard drill size holes, the holes-in one block being graduated in size in a direction opposite to that of the opposite block, means to hold the blocks in adjusted position, and means to secure the adjustable bracket in adjusted position.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, a bed plate, one edge of the bed plate being provided with a longitudinal groove, a bracket longitudinally adjustable in the said groove, a stationary bracket, each of the said brackets being provided with dove tailed grooves, adjustable guide blocks provided with tongues located in the said dove tailed grooves whereby the said blocks may be vertically adjusted in the said bracket, each of the said blocks being provided with a series of graduated openings, the opening in one block being disposed reversely to the order of the openings in the other block, and means to lock the said guide blocks in adjused position.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, a bed plate, one edge of the bed plate being provided with a longitudinal groove, a bracket longitudinally adjustable in the said grooye, a stationary bracket, each 01. the said brackets being provided with. dove tailed grooves, adjustable guide blocks provided with tongues located in the said dove-tailed grooves whereby the said blocks may be vertically adjusted in the said bracket, each of the said blocks being provided with a series of graduated openings,;the openings in one block being disposed reversely to the order of the openings in the other block, and means to lock the said guide blocks in adjusted position, the said bed plate being provided with graduations and a longitudinally adjustable member adapted to engage the work disposed in position i'r receiving a drill in the openings in the said block.
4. In an apparatus of the character described a bed plate, longitudinally adjustable brackets mounted upon the bed plate, a stationary bracket, guide blocks including beveled members, each having a series
