HINGE STRUCTURE FOR TRAVELING BAGS; 7
Application filedMarch 15, 1920. Serial No. seam.
To all whomit may concern:
, Be it known that 1', ARTHUR KAHLOW, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee,in the county ofMilwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinge Structures for Traveling Bags; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in traveling bags or the like receptacles more particularly of that type including a somewhat flexible body having a pair of U- shaped mouth frames secured to the free edges thereof, the ends of the legs of said frames being hinged together to provide for opening and closing the receptacle, my invention being directed more particularly to these hinge connections for the mouth frames.
It is in general the obj ect of my invention to simplify and otherwise improve the construction and to increase the efficiency and the attractive appearance of hinge c0nnec-.
more provides for entirely covering the ex? posed portion of the hinge structure by the sheathing for the body material of the receptacle.
of an arrangement which prevents looseness of the hinge connection and insures proper closing engagement of the mouth frames of the receptacle.
With the above and other objects and ad- I vantages in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of the parts as hereinafter described and defined by the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a sectional view through the hinge connection of a pair of frame legs, embodying my invention, the plane of this section being indicated by the line 1--1 of Figure 4, and the frame legs being shown in open position.
Figure 2 is a somewhat similar view showing the frame legs in closed position.
Figure 8 1s a plan view of the hinge struc- A further object resides in the provision ture with thebody material of the receptacle removed.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view through the intermediate member of the hinge structure and associated body material, and
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view on the line 5+5 of Figure 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings'a'l: show only one of the hinge connections for the frame legs of a traveling bag or like receptacle, since both connections are identical. 1' thus show a pair of inner and outer frame legs, the'outer frame leg comprlsing a channel portion 5 open toward the exterior of the bag and having a flange portion 6 extending laterallytherefrom and adapted to embrace the corre sponding flange portion 7 of the corresponding channel-8 of the inner frame leg, whereby the frames may be disposed somewhat in nested relation when closed, asis usual in structures of this character.
In my improved structure, the inner flange carrying sides of the leg channels are pivotally connected at their extremities with an intermediate hinge section 9, thisv pivotal connection being effected in the present instance by interfitting setszofears 10 on the ends of the channel sides and hinge section 9 which receive hinge pins 11. The ends of the channel sides are adapted to abut on the hinge connection 9 as shown in Figure 2 whereby to prevent movement of said portions together past an angle of.
ninety degrees thuspreventing looseness of the hinge structure and insuring proper nesting engagement of the frames when closed. The intermediate hinge section 9 carries a flange portion 12 adapted for disposition at the outer side of the flanges 6 and 7 of the frame legs when they are swung together, this flange 12 thus extending upwardly from the outer edge of the hinge section. A tongue 13 is extended from the inner side edge of the section 9 and bent under said section to form a short channel in conjunction therewith. I thus provide what may be termed an intermediate channel section hingedly connecting the main leg channel sections. I
The body material 14: of the receptacle, which may be formed of any suitable flexible board is cut in a generally conventional manner to fit the mouth frames and the; corresponding free edges of the body material are tucked into channel sections 5 and 8 of the frame legs, as shown particularly in Figure 5. T he outer sheathing 15 or the body material is also tucked into the channels and the free edge of the inner sheathing material 16 is also tucked into the channels. The sides of the channel are then clamped together preferably by means of the rivets 17 passed therethrough. The inner sheathing material is then bent about and pasted to the inner and outer sides of the leg flange portions 6' and is continued about the channel portions and 8, covering the rivets 17, and then extended over the inner face of the body material. An exceedingly simple, attractive and durable structure is thus provided, this general arrangement being shown in the Patent No. 860,806, granted to me July 23, 190?. The body material adjacent the intermediate hinge section 9 is tucked between said section and its channel tongue 13, as is also the inner and outer covering portions. The sections 9 and 13 are then clampedtoge'ther by a rivet 18 and the inner covering material is extended about the flange 12 and over the intermediate section 9 between the frame legs and then extended under the tongue section 13 and downwardly at the inner face of the body material.
- An exceedingly effective and readily constructed hinge structure is thus provided which is exceedingly attractive in appearance, which forms a complete closure at the hinge portion of the traveling bag or other receptacle and which will prove durable in continued use.
While I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be appreciated that various changes and modifications of structure may be employed to meet difiering conditions of use and manufacture, without departing in any manner from the spirit of my invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In a receptacle of the class described,
messes the combination with a pair of mouth frame legs, of an intermediate hinge section pivotally secured to each of said legs, each leg being channel-shaped with the open side of the channel disposed outwardly to receive the body material of the receptacle, the
hinge section also having a similarly disposed channel portion for receiving the intermediate portion of said body material, and means for securing said body'material in said channels.
2. In a receptacle of the class described, the combination with a pair of mouth frame legs, of an intermediate hinge section pivotally secured to each of said legs, each leg being channel shaped with the open side of the channel disposed outwardly, the hinged section also having a similarly disposed channel portion, said channels having the edges of the body material of the re ceptacle secured therein, and inner covering material secured in said channels and ere tending about said channels and then over the inner surface of the body material.
3.'In a receptacle of the class described, the combination with a pair of mouth frame legs, of an intermediate hinge section pivotally secured to each of said legs, each leg being channel shaped with the open side of the channel disposed outwardly, the
hinged section also having a'similarly di posed channel portion, said channels having the edges of the body material of the receptacle secured therein, inner covering material secured in said channels and extend ing about said channels and then over the inner surface of the body material, each of said legs and said hinged section having a flange angularly directed therefrom, said flanges being adapted to overlie each other when the receptacle is closed.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the'county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
