0F AMESBURY, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOB TO POWOW MANU- EYE SHADE FORJHOTDR-CAR DRIVERS.
Application flied December 8, 1921. Serial No. 520,962.
To all whom it may concern: j
Be it known that I, Gnonon WELLS, a citizen of the United States, resident of Amesbury, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have made a certain new e Shades for Motor-Car Drivers; and I eclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as, will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures ofreference marked there- ,on, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is an edge view of the invention as applied.
Figtire 2 is a face view of the invention. Figure 3 a central longitudinal section of the same partly broken away.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4- -4 Figure 3. I l
The invention has relation to means for shading the eyes of the drivers of motor cars when suddenly drivin vinto'the sunlight, or when driving at nig 1t facing strong 1 lights, especiallyin the rain,'a'n' object being to providean improved eye'shade, attachable to the. bottom of the forward edge portion of the roofof a closed car or to the lower face of the front bow of the top of an open the inside of the car, and the device being foldable out of the way to a position parallel with'the roof or top of the car.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth. v
In the accompanying drawings, illustratng the invention, the numeral 1 designates vertical end brackets, having horizontal top flanges wherein are provided perforations 2 for vertical screws or bolts 3, whereby the brackets are secured to the forward portion of the roof or top of the car, each bracket bein provided with a horizontal frusto-conica? extension 4 engaging similarly formed recesses F of plugs 6, one of which is securedin place within each end portion of a' cylindrical enlurgcn'icnt 7 of the eyeshade 8.
The plugs 6 are horizontally perforated at 9, and engaged with said perforations and passing through the hollow cylindrical milargement 7 of the eyeshade is a hinge rod 10, one end of said rod being externally threaded at 11 and having en agement with the internal thread of a per oration or recess 12 of one of the frusto-conical extensions 4, and the other end of the rod engaging the perforation 90f the other plug and terminating at the smaller end, of the frusto-conical recess thereof and having an internally threaded recess 13, a screw 14 engaging the same and the horizontal perforation of the other extension 4, which perforation is extended through the related bracket 1 and enlarged thereat to receive the head of the screw.
The enlargement 15 of the aforesaid perforation is made sufiiciently deep to receive a coiled spring 16, against which the head 17 of the screw bears to compress the same and hold it under tension, the result being that the screw is prevented from being adjusted to cause too tight a wedging engagement of the frusto-conical extensions 4 with the frusto-conical recesses of the plugs, the I tensioned, spring bearing against the head of the screw also serving to hold the screw in position as adjusted. V p
The end bracketsd are stationary, and the plugs 6 are fast to the hinge-enlargement of the eyeshade, whereby when the eyeshade is grasped by the hahd of the operator and adjusted to the pr'o er angle for shading purposes, or folde ack' or upwardly out of the way, the frusto-conical recess Walls of the In s will have frictional engagement with t e rusto-conical walls of the extensions 4. In this way the eyeshade will be held in position as adjusted and rattling of the parts will be prevented. Any wear may be taken up by adjustment of the screw 14.
The device is of simple nature, capable of economical manufacture, readily assembled and takenapart, and being attachable interiorly of and adjustable within the interior of the car, is especially convenient for the operator or driver.
In an eyeshade for motor car drivers, vertical end brackets attachable to -the tops and roofs of cars and having-frus'to-conical horizontal extensions one of which has a threaded recess and the other of which has a perforation one end of which is enlarged, a hinge rod having. a t. readed end engagin said threaded recess and at its other en having athreaded recess, a screw engaging extensions, said shade being foldable to a said perforation and the threaded end of position parallel to the said tops and roofs. 10 said recess of said rod, a coiled spring seated In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the enlarged portion of said perforation in presence of two witnesses.
5 and 'bearingagainst the head of said screw, GEORGE W. WELLS.
and a horizontal shade mounted upon said Witnesses: hinge rod and having end plugs provided MARTIN F. Commnm',
with frusto-conicalrecesses engaging said HARRJE'I'I'E B. Goomuon.
