HILL, OF ROANOKE, VIRGINIA.
maven PATENT orricn.
RAYMOND E.
COAL AUGEB.
Application filed September 27, 1920. Serial No. 412,917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE E. l/VIL- LIAMS, JUBAL E. STULTZ, and RAYMOND E. HILL, citizens of the United States, residents, respectively, of- Stone, Kentucky, Stone, Kentucky, and Roanoke, Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal Angers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to coal angers and particularly to portable devices of this character adapted to be manipulated and operated by hand.
The object of our invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned which shall be comparatively light in weight and easy to operate to the end that a miner may accomplish more work in a given length of time and with greater ease and less exhaustion to himself than with devices now in general use. A further object of our invention is to provide a device as mentioned adapted to be operated by both hands, but which may be arranged to operate with but one hand when in position. inconvenient to work with both. A further object of our invention is to irovide a device as mentioned which shall be of simple construction and which will not readily get out of order. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view our invention consists generally in a suitable frame, a bit spindle and operating shaft rotatably mounted therein, anti-friction bearings for said spindle and shaft and a crank on one end of said. shaft. Our invention further consists in a device as mentioned in combination. with a crank detachably mounted on the free end of said shaft to the end that the device may be operated in position where the last mentioned. crank would interfere with the operation of the device. Our invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim. Our invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specific-ation and in which- Fig, 1 is a plan view of the device, portions being shown in section, and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Referring now to the drawings 1 indicates the frame of the device which comprises a pair of longitudinal portions 2-2, end portions 3 and 4 and intermediate transverse portion 5 adjacent the end 4. A handle 6 is provided on one of the portions 2 to facilitate manipulating and positioning the device. Thisis particularly advantageous in places where both cranks, hereinafter described, can be used. Fixed to the portion 3 is a stem. H upon which is mounted a breast yoke 8.
Rotatably mounted in the portions 4: and 5 is a spindle 9 provided at its outer end with a coupling 10 to receive the ordinary drill bit. 11 indicates an anti-friction bearmg in the portion 4 for the spindle. The spindle is provided with a collar 12 between which and the frame is arranged an anti-friction thrust bearing 13- Ball-bearings 14 are provided between the spindle and the member 5.
Mounted transversely of the frame is the operating shaft 15, and anti-friction bushings 16 are provided for the same in the pertions 2. One end of the shaft 15 is formed with a-preferably integral crank 17. The opposite end of the shaft is squared as at 18, and detachably mounted on the square end is a crank 19. By having this crank detachable, it may be removed when operating in places where only one crank may be conveniently used, and at such times the device may be held or steadied by means of the handle 6.
The spindle 9 and shaft 15 are provided with intermeshing gears 21 and thrust ballbearings 22 are provided between the gear 21 and the adjacent portion 2 of the frame. The operation of the device is obvious to any one skilled in the art, and it has been proved by actual tests that a miner with the aid of the auger above described may upon the opposite side of the device from said handle, a detachable crank on the shaft adjacent said handle and intermeshing gears on the spindle and shaft, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this speclficatlon 1n the presence of tWo subscribmg witnesses.
