To allwhomitmay concern:
Beit known that I Cmaimcn W. Dioxin# nited States, and resident of Warren, in the county of 'Ifrumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Im rovem'ents in Methods of Producin Riblbe 4iication. v
My present. invention relates to an' iinprovedvmethod of producing expanded metal lathing and aims to provide a4 simple and eliicient rocess which will roduce a lath having o ngitudinal paralle ortions inclinedto the general plane of t e sheet and 'other intervening connecting portions disposed substantially ipendicu ar to the plane of the vsheet all o said portions being forma4 streamlined man. The mici@ whichis produced 'by mi method is' dsclosed in and forms the su ject f an 'a plication led. by me on the 2nd day of une, 192e, No. ;as5,s9c, .Patenti No. 1,372,741, dated-March 29, 1921.
The inventionv includes` tlieiio'vel method hereinafter'more ullydescribed and particularly defined the appended claims.
An embodimentof my invention' is illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings in 4which-- Figure'l isa planviewof an expanded sheet vbefore corrugatii'i.. i
Fig. 2 s a section on i'ne 22 of Fig. 1.
' Fig. 3 is aplan view of the corru'ga sheet. Fig. 4 is and 5 is an elevation, partly in section, dieseaeapable of use in ca outny im rnv procesa llltylvlizll be readi y underdoood that my method may1 be carried out by hand, if de aired, but I prefer to use coactlng dies, and preferably roller dies.
In proceeding according to my invention, I first provide a sheet of vmetal with longitudinally disposed rows of staggered slits which may b e pnoduced in the ordinary or any desired manner, these slits boing uniforinly distributed throughout the entire area of the sheet between the in arg'lns thereof.
The sheet is thenexpandedby any ysluitd Expanded` -Metal Lathing, of w ich tle" following is a speci-V ,natnre being formed ofithe Fi ted and 1, 'ofw ich powermaybea a section on line 4--4 of Fig. 3,
extending in a able* method or means produce the form of ex ended-sheet shown in Fig. 1.
I t en dellect certain of the strands a" 'and a in op osite directions vertically along eguidistant. ongitudinal parallel lines, or lines .parallel with the edges .or-mar ins of the sheet thus producin .substantia y' ver4 tical portions 4or ribs o V i:et'iculated nature,
and at the same time carrygdraw orpress the intervening portions intoV planes which are inclined to the general lane of the sheet and which portions are a of reticulated openeii or expanded strands desi ted a',
'.Ihe resulting'glat `may` 'besaid to cemprise a plurali "of longitudinal open work sections 1' whi lie in lanes oblique to the general surface offthe ath, which sections are formed of sinuous strands extending len wise of the sections and connected toget er at separated alternating oints, the adjacent edges of the sections ing connected to one anotherby other sinuous strands extending between said adjacent edges and lying =in planes substantially` per- Isprefer to deflect the strands 'as above described by means-of coacting dies, preferablyroller dies, as indicated at 2 and 2*, 5, journaled in suitable- bearings 3, 3*
ared to rotate in unison and to one plied in any suitable manner. Tliedie aces are provided with meeting -faces which Acomprise substantially vertical' portions o r portions lyiiin a plane substantially perpendicular to e axis of the die,` and other portions diagonal or inclined direction from the inner' edge of one vertical porti'onto the outer edge of' the next adjacentv portion.
Havi thus described my invention, whatlcaim'is:
1. The hereindescribed method 4of producing a ribbed expanded metal sheet from an ex' anded metal sheet formed of sinuous stran s extending lengthwise of the sheet and connected together at separate alternating` points whichconsists in deilectin certam lstrands in opposite directions su stanmul taneous vteneouel'y carryingfthe-mtevenmg tially vertically of the sheet along equidistant longitudinal palallel lines, and .si- V ca i e interveni E ontions of the heeis'liynthgplanes inclinedngtogthe. general plane of thesheet. i A 2."The hereindecxibed, method ducing a ribbed expanded 'metal sheet an ex stran extending lengthwiee of the .sheet and connected together at lsepiufate, alternating points which consists in .dellecti een. n
vtam strands in 'opgiositedirectionsss tially vertically o the sheet f along equidiatant lon gitudinal: parallel lines and v ilulof the sheets into planeeilined to tlgenff Y.oo'risists in expanding 'sue mm.. ended metal sheet for 1ne d of sinuons:
. dies glane ofthe sheet and other poigtions f i teased A ing portions inclin' I3. The hereindescribed method lof form- `ing oorxugted lathing f om a sheet having parallel longitudinal stag red slitsJ whic y sheet .and then feeding it longitudinally between ecacting having longitudinally disposed ressing surfaces arranged at an obtuse ang e to the intervening suraces substantially vertical to the general plane of the sheet.
