To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVIN H. Jns'rER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Building Construction Clip, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to building construction, and has more particular reference to a clip for locking together the tie-rods or re-inforcing rods of a concrete structure.
Prior to my invention, it has been customary to fasten the crossed re-inforced rods of concrete structures together by tying them with wires at their crossing points.
One of the primary objects of my present invention is to provide a clip for locking the re-inforcing rods together by means of which the rods can be quickly, easily and firmly locked together.
Another object of my invention is to provide a clip which can be applied to the juncture of crossed rods much more quickly than these rods could be bound together by wiring, and which will hold the rods together more securely than wiring was capable of doin Still another object of my invention is to provide a clip which will embody in its construction a locking lug, which is adapted to engage with one of the rods to efiect in conjunction with the other structure of the clip, the locking of the rods together.
In order to facilitate an understanding of my invention, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings, preferred embodiments thereof, from an inspection of which when considered in connection with the following description, my invention and many of its inherent advantages should be understood and appreciated.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a clip for locking crossed rods together;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the manner of application of the clip;
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the clip in operative position; and
Fig. 4 is an end view of this clip.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail, and particularly Figs. 1 to 4 thereof Reference characters 11 and 12 indicate respectively a pair of crossed reinforcing rods such as are customarily employed in concrete building construction. The clip employed for locking such rods together at their junction consists of a metal member,
designated generally by reference character 13, and comprising parallel side Walls 14 and 15, united along one edge by an outwardly the rod 11. The walls 14. and 15 are provid-' ed respectively With inclined slots 18 extending rearwardly and downwardly from the front edges of the clip, the slot being of suiiicient width to accommodate the rod 12, and the rear end of the slot being terminated at a point substantially beneath but slightly rearwardly of the dog 17, as will be evident from Fig. 3.
In order to apply this dip, it is first dropped over the rod 11 and then tilted upon the lug 17 into the inclined position indicated in Fig. 2, from which it will be observed that the upper and lower edges of the slot 18 are disposed substantially parallel with the rod 11 so that as the clip is moved along the rod 11 to the right, viewing Fig. 2, the rod 12 will enter the slots 18 in the side walls of the clip. 'When the clip has been slid along the rod 11 until the rod 12 approaches the rear ends of the slots, the clip is then swung in a counter-clockwise direction about the lug 17 as a pivot, into the position shown in Fig. 3. This swinging movement brings the parallel edges of the slots 18 from a position parallel with the rod 11 to a position inclined thereto, so that the rod 11 now intersects the slots with the result that the bottom of this rod in conjunction with the now upwardly inclined bottoms of the slots, serve to lock the rod 12 against displacement from the clip, and the binding action exerted upon thev rod 11 by the lug 17 at the top and the rod 12 at the bottom serves to clamp the rods together and prevent movement of the clip and the rod 12 longitudinally of the rod 11. It will be apparent that so long as the clip remains in the vertical position shown in Fig. 3, the rods are firmly clamped together and they can be released only by swinging the clip from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 2. For the purpose of precluding accidental release of the clip, I
have perforated the side Walls of the clip as indicated at 19 and when the clip is positioned on the rods to secure them together, I prefer to insert throu h these apertures a lockin member in the orm of a suitable pin 21, which may be simply a nail or other preferred type of pin.
From the foregoing, it should be manifest that this clip While simple in construction and cheap to manufacture, can be very quickly applied to the rods and when once applied, securely locks the rods together. Furthermore, accidental release of the rods is effectually prevented, so that they are permanently retained in locked relation.
It is believed that my invention, its construction and mode of operation will be understood from the foregoing without further description, but it should be manifest that my invention is not limited by the structural details illustrated and described and it is only circumscribed by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A building construction clip comprising a U-shaped member provided at the arch thereof intermediate its ends with an inwardly projecting lug, the side walls of said member being slotted inwardly from one end at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the member, whereby said member may be moved longitudinally to embrace a pair of crossed rods and then tilted about said lug as a fulcrum to lock said rods together.
2. A buildin construction clip com rising a U-shaped member, the sidewal s of which are provided with open ended slots extending at an angle to the longitudinal axis of said member and the arch of said member being provided intermediate the ends thereof with an inwardly projecting lug spaced from said slots a distance approximately equal to the diameter of the rod over which said member is disposed, said member being adapted to be tilted about said lug relative to said rod to permit its movement longitudinally of the rod to dispose a crossed rod in said slots whereupon said member is tilted in the opposite direction about said lug to thereby lock said rods together.
3. A buildin construction clip comprising a U-shape member provided with an inwardly projecting lug and with a pair of longitudinally extending slots disposed at an angle to the longitudinal axis of said member, said member being adapted to be tilted about said lug as a fulcrum to lock a plurality of crossed rods together, and means engagable with one of said rods on the opposite side thereof from said lug for locking said member in said tilted position to prevent disengagement of said rods.
