Be it known that I, 'HARRY S. BER, a i
citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Tube Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in v a tube holder, and particularly to a holder for collapsible tubes containin tooth paste,
shaving cream, glue, paint an the like.
The object of m invention is to construct a tube holder whlch is adapted to receive tubes of various sizes, and which may be readily 'inserted and removed from the holder; a further object is to provide a tube holder comprising a base and a carriage movably mounted thereon, having novel features ofv construction and arrangement of the parts which increase the usefulness of the device, simplify its operation, and reduce the cost of manufacture; a further object is to provide a spring for retarding the movement of the carriage, which is moved by the winding of the collapsible end of the tube upon a shaft, whereby the tube will be tightly wound upon said shaft and thus completely discharge the contents of the tube, and a still further object of my invention is to provide a handle upon the de-` vice which is capable of having two separate movements, one for turning a shaft for compressing the tube and the other movement for opening and closing a valve controlling the discharge end o f the tube.
Referring to the drawing ,-Fig. 1, is a front elevation of my improved tube holder showing the valve in the open position; Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the tube holder; Fig. 3, is avertical section of the tube holder showing the valve closed; Fig. 4, is a plan view of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the tube holder with the parts shown inthe position to close the valve; and Fig. 7, is an inverted plan view of the tube holder .showing the valve in the closed position.
ln the accompanying drawing, in which like reference characters refer to like parts, 1 represents base which is of channel formation, having a plane surface or back 2,
adapted to be secured upon` a vertical wall.
Secured to the lower end of the base 1 is i a bracket 7 having an a erture 8 formed through the same for the? insertion of the discharge end or nozzle 9 of the tube 10. Said aperture 8 is made lar e in diameter so as to .receive the largest s1ze tubewhich may be used upon the holder. The end or nozzle 9 of the tube is securedfin the bracket 7 by -a thumb-screw 12 /mountedin a threaded aperture formed in the bracket T.
The carriage 6 consists of two side plates 14 and 15 having inwardl turned edges 16 which project under the anges 3 and 4 of the base 1. Said side plates 14 and 15 are held togetherv in spaced relation to each other by a cross-piece 18, secured to said plates. Secured upon the cross piece 18 is:

side plates 1-4 and 15 of the carriage. The shaft 22 is provided with a longitudinalslot 23 formed through the same for the reception of the iat end of the tube 10, which is to be wound around the shaft. The ends of the shaft 22 project beyond the plates 14 and 15. The shaft 22 is held against longitudinal movement by` a fastening device, such as a pin 25 located at one end of the shaft, and by a shoulder 26 formed by the enlarged square portion 28 upon the opposite end of the shaft 22. A handle 30, in the form of a wheel, 1s slidably mounted upon the square portion 2 8 of the shaft 22.4 By turning the handle the shaft will be rotated and the tube may he wound thereon for compressing the latter.l
valve 35 is in the form of a spring plate which is mounted below the under side of the bracket 7, and is adapted to press tightly against the bracket and cover the aperture 8 formed through the bracket. The valve plate 35 is secured, at its rear end, to the lower end of a rod 36, which latter is rotatably mounted in the bracket 7 and in an angle plate 38, eXtending from the top of the base 1. By turning the rod 36 the valve plate 35 may be moved into the position shown in Figs. 1, 4 and 5, so as to open the saidaperture 8 formed in the bracket 7 and also open the end or nozzle 9 of the tube which latter may be secured in the bracket 7 so that the lower end surface ofthe nozzle 9 will be iiush with the valve plate 35 and the latter will thus form an air tight closure for the tube, when the f valve 35 is in the closed position as shown side in Figs. 2, 3, 6 and 7. l
The valve 35 may be opened and closed by a sliding movement of the handle 3() upon the square end 28 of the shaft 22. The handle 30 is provided with a flange 40, which forms an annular groove into which extends the turned end 41 of a sliding plate 42, slidably mounted in the side lates 14 and 15 of the carriage 6. The sliding platel 42 is provided with a wider portion between the lates of the carriage which forms shoul er' 44 and 45, adapted to take against said side plates 14 and 15 and thus limit thel movement of the slidin plate 42 and also prevent the handle 80 rom coming oil' the shaft 28.
The sliding plate 42 is provided with a portion forming a lug 46 extendin at right an les to the main `part of the sli( ing plate. Said lu r 46 provides a hearing for the link 48, wliic i is pivotally attached to the lug 46, b the pin or rivet 49. The link 48 is provided with a rectangular aperture 50 formed through the same and through which aperture extends the rod 36, also of rectangular formation throughout the llength of travel of the carria e 6 upon the base 1. The link 48 slides free y upon the square rod36 and the link will act as a crank arm and turn the rod when the sliding plate 42 is moved hy sliding the handle 3() upon the shaft 22 and thev rod 36 will actuate the valve 35.
The operation of my invention is as follows: 'llie base is secured in a fixed position upon a suitable support; the carriage is slid upon the base to a position at the upper end o the base where it is held by the action of the spr ng 20; a tube, having the screw cap removed is now )laced upon the bracket so that the nozzle will extend through the aperture formed in the bracket and its end surface will rest upon the valve )late 35, in which position the tube is secured in the bracket by the thumb screw 12: the carriage is now moved downwardly until the flat end of the tube will enter the slot formed in the shaft 22; by turning the handle 30 the shaft will cause the tube to be wound around it; as the tube sliortens the carriage will be drawn towards the fixed bracket 7 and the spring on the carria e will press against the base -and retard tie movement of the carriage suiciently to insure the tube being tightly wound upon the shaft and thus discharge all the contents of the tube, thus eliminating any waste of material. The dischargeI end of the tube is conveniently opened and closed by simply slidin' the handle 30 upon the shaft which will operatethe valve .through the medium of the rod pivotally mounted upon the hase and carr in the valve.
Having thus descriie my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:'-
1. A tube holding device comprisin', a base, a part secured to the base for holding oneI end of a collapsible tube, a part movable upon the base for holding the opposite end o said tube, mechanism for compressing the tube and discharging the contents thereof, a valve for controlling the discharge opening of the tube, and a handle operatively mounted upon the device for controlling the movement of the said mechanism for coinpressing.v the tube and for controlling the movement of the said valve.
2. A tube holding device comprisin r, a base, a part secured to the base for holding one end of a collapsible tube, a part movable upon the base for holding the opposite end or said tube, mechanism for compressing the tube and discharging the contents thereof, a' valve for controlling the discharge opening of the tube, and a handle o ieratively mounted upon the device and ca ia ile of two separate movements, one of said movements for actuating the said mechanism for compressing the tube and the other movement for actuating the said valve.
3. A tube holding device comprising, a base, a part secured to the base for holdin f one end of a collapsible tube, a part movab e upon the base for holding the opposite end of said tube, mechanism for compressing the tube and discharging the contents thereof, a valve for controllin the discharge openin of the tube, a han le operatively mounterfx upon the device whereby a rectilinear movement of the handle opens and closes the valve and a rotary movement of the handle operates the said mechanism for compressing the tube.
4. A tube holder comprisin r a base, a part secured to the base for hoh ing one end of a tube, a iai-t movable upon sind hase, a shaft rotatalil, mounted in the said movable part, said shaft adapted to engage and wind one end of a. collapsible tube thereon, a handle, upon the shaft for rotating the shaft, said handle being slidably mounted upon the shaft, u valve for openin and closing the discharge end of said tage, and actuating means connecting the valve with the handle whereby a sliding movement of the handle upon the shaft will actuate the valve.
5. A tube holder comprising a base, a part secured to the base for holdin one end of a tube, a part movable u on sai base, a shaft rotatably mounted in t e said movable art, said shaft adapted to engage and win one end of a collapsible tube thereon, a handle upon the shaft for rotating the shaft, said handle being slidably mounted upon the shaft, a valve for opening and closing the discharge end of said tube, a rod rotatably mounted upon the base and adapted to actuate the valve and mechanism operatively mounted between the rod and the handle whereby a sliding movement of the handle upon said shaft will rotate the rod and actuate the valve.
6. A tube holder comprising a base, a part secured to the base for holding one end of a tube, a part movable upon said base, a shaft rotatably mounted in the said movable part, said shaft adapted to engage and wind one end of a collapsible tube thereon, a handle upon the shaft for rotating the shaft, said handle being slidably mounted upon the shaft, a valve for opening and closing the discharge end of said tube, a rod rotatably mounted upon the base and adapted to actuate the valve, a member slidably mounted upon the rod adapted to reciprocate the latter and mechanism operatively mounted between the said member and the handle whereby a sliding movement. of the handle upon said shaft will operate the rod and the valve.
7. A tube holder comprising a base, a part secured to the base for holding one end of a tube, a part movable upon said base, a shaft rotatably mounted in the said movable part, said shaft adapted to engage and wind one end of a collapsible tube thereon, a handle upon the shaft for rotating the shaft` said handle being slidably mounted upon the shaft, a valve for opening and closing the discharge end of said tube, a plate slidably mounted in the part carrying the said shaft, said plate. and said handle being in operative engagement whereby a sliding movement of the handle upon the shaft will move the plate, a link pivotally connected with the said plate, a rod rotatably mounted upon the base and adapted to actuate the valve and said link slidably mounted upon said rod and secured against rotation upon the latter.
8. A tube holder comprising a base, a part secured to the base for holding one end of a tube, a part movable upon said base, a shaft rotatably mounted in the said movable part, said shaft adapted to engage and wind one end of a collapsible tube thereon, a handle upon the shaft. for rotating the shaft, said handle being slidably mounted upon the shaft, a valve for opening and closing the discharge end of said tube, a plate slidably mounted in the part carrying the said shaft, said plate and said handle being in operative engagement whereby a sliding movement of the handle upon the shaft will move the plate, a square rod rotatably mounted in the base and extending at right angles to the plane of the movement of the plate, a link pivotally attached to the said plate and having a square aperture formed therein through which the square rod freely passes and is adapted to be rotated by the link and a valve actuated by the said rod.
9. A tube holder comprising a base, a part secured to the base for holding one end of a tube, a part movable upon said base, a shaft rotatably mounted in the said movable part, said shaft adapted to engage and wind one end of a collapsible tube thereon, a handle upon the shaft for rotating the shaft, said handle being slidably mounted upon the shaft, a valve for opening and closing the discharge end of said tube, a plate slidably mounted in the part carrying the said shaft, said plate and said handle being in operative engagement whereby a sliding movement of the handle upon the shaft will moveth'e plate, a stop formed upon said plate to limit the movement of the handle upon the shaft, a valve for opening and closing the discharge end of the tube and mechanism operatively connecting the said plate with the valve.

A tube holder comprising a base, a carriage slidably mounted upon the base, a spring upon the carria e to retard the movement of the carriage, a racket upon the base for securing the discharge end of a collapsible tube, a shaft rotatably mounted in the carriage and adapted to have the tube wound around the same, a handle for rotating the shaft, a valve for closing the discharge end 0f the tube, a rod for operating the valve, a link for turning the rod to operate the valve, said link mounted upon the carriage and slidable upon the rod, and connecting mechanism between the link and the handle for operating the valve by the handle.
