MECHANISM FOR FORMING- BALLS.
Application filed. May 16, 1921. Serial No. 470,156.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT lV. ALBRECHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Mechanism for Forming Balls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mechanism for forming balls.
An object of the invention is to provide a device for stamping balls out of irregularly shaped bodies.
Another object of the invention is to provide a die whereby balls may be formed by a punching operation from irregularly shaped bodies.
Additional advantages will appear from the following detailed description of the invention taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. l is an elevation, partially in section, illustrating the device.
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the structure at the completion of the ball-forming operation.
As illustrated in the drawing the invention includes a die-block 1 having a cylindrical cavity 2 arranged therein. The dieblock 1 is arranged to be mounted on the bed of a punch press, any suitable connecting means being utilized for that purpose.
In the bottom wall of the cavity 2 is an upstanding projection 3, the upper wall of which is hollowed out to form a hemispherical cavity a. An opening from the bottom of the cavity t extends through the body of the die-block l and an ejector in the form of a rod 5 is mounted in said opening. The upper face of said rod has a dished portion 6 conforming to the contour of the plane of the opening into the bottom of the cavity 4.
A plunger adapted to be mounted in the reciprocating head of the punch press, has a cavity 8 formed in the end thereof, the cavity 8 being so formed that when the end of the plunger rests in the cavity 2 and against the bottom wall thereof, the upper part of the cavity 8 will form a complete spherical cavity with the cavity 4.
A vent opening 9, to prevent compression so that the plunger may properly seat in the cavity 2, extends from the upper wall of the cavity 8 to the side of the plunger.
In utilizing the device the irregularly named cavity shaped bodies are fed into the cavity 2 in the die-block and the plunger reciprocated downwardly, the walls of the cavity 8 seating in the space between the side walls of the cavity 2 and the exterior walls of the cylindrical. Lip-standing projection 3, thus forming the irregularly shaped body into a perfeet sphere. The ejector device 5 may be operated through any suitable mechanism to force the ball or sphere out of the cavity 4: after the forming operation has been completed.
I am aware that the invention may be modified in certain particulars without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. 1 do not limit myself, therefore, to the exact construction shown and described, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class described, comprising a die-block having a cylindrical cavity therein, an Lip-standing cylindrical projection in the center of said cavity and having a hemispherical cavity in its upper end, and a plunger adapted to seat in said first-named cavity and having a cavity in its end to form with said second-named cavity a complete spherical cavity.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a die-block having a cylindrical cavity therein, an Lip-standing cylindrical projection in the center of said cavity having a hemispherical cavity in its upper end, and a plunger adapted to seat in said first i and having a cavity in its end to form with said second-named cavity a complete. spherical cavity and having a vent opening communicating with the cavity in said plunger.v
3. A device of the character described, comprising a die block having a cavity therein, an rip-standing projection in the center of said cavity having a hemispherical cavity in its upper end, and a plunger adapted to extend into said first-named cavity and having a cavity in its lower end to receive said projection, the upper end of said lastnamed cavity being helm-spherical to form with the second-named cavity a complete spherical cavity, said plunger having a vent opening from the hen'ii-spherical portion of said cavity in it to a point above the portion of the plunger that enters the die block.
