Application filed August 24,1921. Serial No. 495,070.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that JosErH MonIooA and FRED MORIOCA, the former a citizen of the United States and the latter a citizen of Italy, residing at lVellsville, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Snowplows, of which the following is a specification.
This'invention relates to improvements in what may be termed, generally, snow plows, more especially means or appliances for locomotives for cleaning the tracks or rails of railways.
This invention has for its object to provide for clearing or cleaning the rallway tracks or rails especially in case of hghtfalls of snow, in a simple, expedient, effective and inexpensive manner.
A further object of the invention 1s to provide for the portability of the device in applying it for use particularly to the locomotive or when not required for use.
Other objects of the invention, together with the foregoing, will be apparent from the following description of the construction and operation of the invention.
The invention therefore consists of certain instrumentalities and features of construction substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed and pointed out by the appended claims.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the preferred embodiment or one form of my invention, wherein it Wlll be understood that various changes and mod1fications as relate to the detailed construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the claims, in which drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention, showing it as applied to the cowcatcher of a locomotive, the latter being disclosed only fragmentarily.
Figure 2 is a detached front view of my invention, with the attaching nut-equipped bolts thereof.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken through Figure 2 on the line 3-3.
Figure 4 is a vertical section taken on the line ie-4c of Figure 1.
In carrying out my invention, 1 provide a suitable support 1 preferably of general t -shape to adapt it to be conveniently applied to a locomotive-cow-catcher, or otherwise for use. The support 1 is preferably formed of an upper metallic member 2 also conforming to the above indicated shape and having suitably bolted or screwed to its inner surface preferably duplicate pieces or blocks of rubber 3, the member 2 having secured rigidly or integrally therewith a downwardly extending plate 3 which forms in combination with the outer vertically disposed portion 2 a rectangular channel adapted to embrace said rubber blocks or pieces. The rubber blocks or pieces 3 have bolted or clamped therebetween preferably steel strips 4:, or other flexible medium, adapted to extend about a couple of inches below the tops or treads of the rails and clear away snow laterally therefrom, the lower edges of the rubber blocks or pieces 3 which are inclined laterally or obliquely to render them freely yieldable, engaging and clearing the snow oil the rail tops, thus providing for readily and effectually removing all snow, which would otherwise accumulate upon the rails or track, therefrom. The metallic member 2 of the support 1 has passed or extended through orifices 5 therein threaded bolts or rods 6 whose lower ends are suitably held to the bottom rail of the cow-catcher and provided with jam nuts 7 above the member 2, adapted to engage said -member, whereby the snow cleaner as above described is adapted to be elevated when not required for service and so as to be out of the way of the cow-catcher, and yet remain portably attached thereto so as to be readily brought into service when conditions require.
In rear of the aforesaid cleaner or arrangement of parts, and also arranged at the sides of and under the platform or sup port of the cow-catcher, are additional cleaners 8 of substantially like constituent parts, the metallic members being designated as 9, the rubber blocks as 10, the steel brushes or flexible members as 11 and the elevating threaded bolts or rods as 12, the jam nut answering to the jam nuts applied to the foresaid jam nut being designated as 13, The parts or cleaners are adapted to occupy an angular position or relation to the rails as to clear snow away therefrom and ride above any otherwise obstructing railway-ties at a point between the rails.
We claim and desire to secure by Letters- Patent 1. A device of the type described comprising a cleaner for railway tracks, having an upper member formed with a downwardly opened channel, it pair of elastic members in and projecting. below said channel, and flexible members in said channel and between said elastic members, and projecting below said elastic members and into proximity with the track.
2, A device of the type described, comprising the combination of a support conforming to the cow-catcher and having spaced downwardly extending portions, of downwardly projecting elastic members within said portions, of flexible members disposed between said elastic members, and of a bolt for securing all of said members and support together. V
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures, in the presence of two witnesses.
