BoswoirrH, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Means and Method of Preparing Artificial Snow, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a means and method of preparing` artilicial snow and the objects of my invention are; first, to provide a new and novel process of preparing artificial snow; second, to provide a new and novel apparatus to be used in the preparation and l5 sale of artificial snow; third, to provide an apparatus of this class which combines a device for shaving the ice'into the forni of snow and displaying it in the form offalling snow; fourth to provide an apparatus of this class which preserves the snow and reduces itsliability to melt to a minimum and fifth, to provide an apparatus of this class which is simple and economical ofconstruction, durable, easy to operate and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.

Vith these and 'other objects in vie-w as will appear hereinafter my invention consists of the novel process and certain novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions for carrying out my process as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly7 setv forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application, in which:

The lcasing l, main horizontal partition 2, vertical partition 3, casing partition 4f, door 5, compartment casing 6, scattering member 7, supporting platform knifeS, ice supporting fra-me 9, shaft l0, sheave il, sheaves 19; and 13 and belt 14e constitute the principal parts and portionsof my apparatus for preparing and displaying artiiicial snow. rlhe casing l is preferably box-shaped and the walls thereof are hollow and filled Iwith saw dust for providing insulation. lt is providwith a main longitudinal partition some distance from the upper side which is provided with an opening 2a thereinand with a vertical partition 3 extending downwardly from the partition 2 and forming a snow display compartment A, on the bottom of which is provided a plurality of small cases 6 which are provided with openings adapted to receive the snow therein and extending from the partition 8 downwardly is the inclined member 3a which is adapted to conduct the falling snow into the holel 6a. These snow compartments are each provided with a door 6b adapted to provide access from the outside to the snow. In the casing above these doors 6b is a glass la. It is desired to provide a double glass here to provide insulation and prevent the rapid melting of the snow which is displayed in falling form through this glass la so that the public may see it in the form of falling snow. Mounted above the hole 2 in the partition 2 is a scattering device consisting of frame 7C and parallel wire strands i and it is supported at each side on the upper edge of the partition over the hole 2a and it is rociprocated by means of a crank 7awhich is revolubly mounted in bearings Tb and on the upper end ofthe crank shaft 7a is a sheave 13 upon which is mounted a belt 14 which extends over another sheave 12 secured to the shaft 10. Mounted over this scattering member 7 is a supporting platform provided with knives 8a anc '8b with their cutting edge extending at an angle and mounted directly overthese knives is the frame y9 which is of the proper size to support a certain sized cake of ice which is placed within through a door 9a on one side and the ice is taken in the receptacle through the door 5 on one side. This frame 9 is revolubly mounted in the upper portion of the casing 'l by being secured to the shaft 10 and this shaft l0 extends up through the upper wall of the casing 1 and secured on the upper end is a sheave 11 which is adapted for a belt from any driving mechanism. This shaft l0 is supported by means of bearings l0EL on opposite sides of the upper wall of the casing l and it will be noted that the cake of ice is positioned in the frame 9 so that its lower edge rests upon the platform and is revolved by means of the shaft l0 which also revolves the shaft 7 for reciprocating the scattering device 7. rThe process consists of revolving the ice over knives for shaving the lower side of the cake of ice, then scatter ing the shaved ice in the form of snow so that it sprinkles downwardly through the display compartment into the box comparte ment whereit is taken and used for edible or other purposes as desired.

Thoughl have shown a particular process and a certain means and apparatus for carrying out my process for preparing artificial snow I do not wish to be limited to this particular process nor to the construction as disclosed, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the process and construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.

It is obvious that there is provided a novel process for preparing and displaying` artificial snow; that there is provided novel means of preparing and displaying said snow; that the snow will be artificially pro` vided by shaving the same by the revolution of the frame 9, carrying with it the cake of ice over the knives 8a and 8" and that the shaved particles will be scattered so that they fall from the scattering device through the display compartment in the form of falling snow; that the snow will be directed into the compartment 6 where it can be taken and fruit or flavoring added for use.

Havingthus described myinvention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The herein described method of preparing and displaying artificial s'now consisting in shaving the surface of a cake of ice, then scattering and displaying the shaved portions in the form of falling flake snow.

3. An apparatus for preparing and dis* playing artificial snow, including a casing, Vvan ice supporting `frame revolubly mounted 'in said casing, a pair of knives with their cutting edges at an Langle upon kwhich'the lower side of the cake of ice rests, means positioned below said knives for sofitteringI the shaved ice in the form' of snow and a display compartment positioned below said cake of ice.

a. An apparatus for preparing and displaying articial snow, including a casing, an ice supporting frame revolubly mounted in said casing, a platform with knives with their cutting edges `extending upwardly on an angle therethrough upon which the lower side of the' cake of ice rests, a display compartment positioned below said cake of ice and means for storing the ice shaved from said cake after it has passed through said compartment.

An apparatus of the class described, including a casing, a display compartment provided with a transparent side in said casing, a cake of ice supporting device revolubly mounted over an opening in the upper side of said display compartment, a plat form upon which said cake of ice rests, a plurality of knives with their cutting edge at an angle positioned in said platform so that the cake of ice in said frame engages said knives and a scattering device reciprocablyl mounted between said knives and vsaid display compartment.

6. An apparatus of the class described, including a casing', a display compartment provided with a transparent side in said casing, a cake of ice supporting device revolubly mounted over an opening in the upper y side of said display compartment, a plurality of knives with their cutting edge at an angle positioned so that the cakeof ice in said frame engages said knives; a scattering device reciprocably mounted between said ,knives and said display compartment and means for revolving said cakey of ice and frame support and for reciprocating said scattering device.

7. An apparatus of the class described, including an .insulated casing, a display com partment provided with transparent sides mounted in said casing, a plurality of snow receiving compartments in the lower side of said display compartment adapted to receive the vsnow passing through-said display compartment, .doors communicating with the interior of `said compartment and extending to the outside of said casinor al u u scatteringfdevice forming a portion ofthe upper wall of said display compartment and reciprocablyniounted therein, a plurality of knives positioned above said scattering .device, a cake of ice supporting frame revolubly mounted above said knives adapted to l revolve a vcake of ice on said knives.

8. An apparatus of the class described. in cluding an insulated casing, a displaycom- .partmentl provided with transparent sides mountedin saidca'sing, a plurality of snow receiving'compartments in the lower side of said display compartment adapted to receive the snow passing through said display compartment, doors communicating with Jthe interior of said compartment and olubly mounted above said knives adapted to revolve a cake of ice on Said knives, and l0 means for revolving seid frame.
