To` all whom` t may concern:
Beit known that I, MICHAEL E. DALY, a citizen of `the United States, residing at Cincinnati in the county of Hamilton and State of hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latch Bolts, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to latch bolts such as are used upon doors for washing machine cylinders and in many other places. The
. invention has particular relation to latches used on doors where there is pressure `upon the bolt or where other factors cause wear of the bolt and thereby prevent the door from being held solidly or tightly in place. n prior constructions such wear has required renewal of the entire bolt.
The object of this invention is to provide a latch having a bolt provided with an ad-y justable and renewable toe, so that upon Wear across the bolt toe it can be adjusted to take up the wear and ultimately can be replaced with a new toe without discarding the entire bolt.
Further objects of the invention are in part obvious and in part will appear more in detail hereinafter.
Tn the drawings, which represent one suitable embodiment of the invention, Fig. 1 is a plan view, illustrating a portion of a door with the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a perspective `view of the bolt; 'F ig. 3 is a side elevation thereof, illustrating a new position of the toe after adjustment; Fig. 4; is a sectional elevation on the line Jr-4, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a similar view on the line 5-5, Fig. 1.
1 indicates a portion of a door, such' as the hinged door of the cylinder of a washing machine, although it is to be understood that the invention is notlimited to such use. Said door is provided with a frame member 2, one portion of which is provided with or formed as a latch casing. In the construction shown member 2 is provided with an inner chamber 3 in which the bolt slides, and at one end of which chamber is a hollow extension 4.
e The bolt comprises a body portion 5 of rectangular form in plan view, said body portion having a recess or open space 6 at its center and being provided with a hol* low tubular rearward extension 7 in which is a pin 8. The body of the bolt slides in the chamber 3 and its cylindrical extension Said bolt is the compres 7 in the hollowextension 4L.` normally pressed outwardly by sion spring 9, said outward ing limited by the screw abutment 10, which passes through a slot 11 of the bolt. Removal of screw 10 permits the bolt pin and spring to be wholly withdrawn from the latch chamber.
At its outer end the bolt is provided with a toe 12 having a straight face 13 engaging the latch keeper la in latched position, and the usual inclined face 15 whose engagement with the keeper pushes back the bolt into its cavity. This toe in struction is adjustable relative to the bolt body, for which purpose its rear face is provided with a series of closely spaced ribs or `teeth 16, extending and which interlock with and t a series of like teeth on the otherwise square end face on the bolt. The toe is held in position in any suitable manner, such as by a pair of screws 17 threaded into said toe and which extend through opening 18 in the bolt. Access tothe screw heads may be had through openings 19 in the back of the bolt body.
Figs. 4land 5 illustrate the position of the parts when first assembled. The toe is solidly held to the bolt in its initial position. If wear occurs the screw 10 is withdrawnand the bolt is taken out of its cavity.
y inserting a screw driver through the holes 19 the screws 17 may be loosened and the toe 12 raised to a new position, as shown in Fig. 3, which brings a renewed surface of the toe to the original position of the keeper engaging toe surface. The screws 17 c'an then be tightened up and the bolt restored to its cavity. This adjustment can be made from time to time to take upl wear and if the toe becomes too worn to be further used it may be replaced by another toe.
lf the keeper engaging surface toe wearsv olf irregularly so that adjustment of the toe to a new position interferes with rearward movement of the bolt into the latch cavity. the toe surface can be liled od flat or along a plane parallel tothe top surface of the .bolt so that it slides back easily into the latch cavity.
`What l claim is 1. A latch having a bolt comprising a body portion having a transverse end face,
movement bethe present conlengthwise of the toe 3. A latch bolt, comprising a body portion having an open center providing transverse front and rear members, an adjustable toe on the front member, and a ingv screw therefor having its head end extending toward the rear member and accessible through an opening therein.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
MICHAEL E. DALY.
