PLATE-PACK ADAPTER.
Application filed October 15, 1918. Serial No. 258,305.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHERMAN M. FAIR- omnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oneonta, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plate-Pack Adapters, of which the following is a specification.
i This inventionrelates to a plate pack adapter, for use in ada ting plate packs for/cameras, and partic arly designed for use with a plate pack described. and claimed in an application for patent filed September 23, 1918, Serial No. 255,33.
The plate pack of the said application may be briefly described as comprising a boxlike container, in which the plates are sold as a'commercial package, the container including telescopically-related sections, which in relative movement withdraws the relative foremost or exposed plate of the plate pile, and transfers such plate to the rear of and as a member of the pile.
The present invention provides an adaptor in which the described plate pack may be readily inserted without necessitating adjustment or manual interlocking, and
which provides for the ready and convenient telescopic movement vof the pack sections necessary in transferring the plates without danger of light entrance; the adapter interlocking with the plate pack through the simple insertion of the latter in place.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 'in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view, partly broken out,.of the improved adapter, the plate pack being shown therein, andthe parts-1n a position of partial operation; and
Fig.3 2 is a vertical section of the same in" a plane parallel to the edge of the plate pack and on the side of the shoulder thereon towards the edge of the side wall of the adapter.
The particular structure of the adapter here shown isdesigned more specifically for the plate pack referred to, and it is to be understood that minor variations ofthe construction described are pontemplated for co- T-operation with other plate packs.
a plate-pack receiving section 1 and a plate pack operating section 2. The recelving section'l is of hollow box-like formation and of.
a size and shape to receive the plate pack 19, 20. The face of the section 1 is open at 3 throughout an area substantially equal to the sensitized area of the plates 21,21, in the plate pack. The side walls 5 and bot- .tom edge wall 6 of the section 1 are solid,
preferably is, provided with any desired I simple type of catch 10, to secure the back in closed relation when desired.-
The operating section-2 has an upper ba 11, from which, adjacent each end, ext end parallel slide bars 12,- adapted' to slidably interfit in channels or grooves 13, out in the side walls 5 of thesection 1. The section 2 is thus adapted to be moved and guided in movement into and outof section 1; The adapter described in its particular formation to receive the plate pack 19, 20 referred to, is formed in the front marginal flange 4 adjacent the bottom edgewall 6 of the sectiop 1, with pins 14 (shown in detail in Fig. 2) or other means, to engage cooperating means on the inner section 20 of the plate pack; while the slide bars12'are provided with lugs 15 to engage beneath the 17, the opposite edge ofwhich is connected to the-adjacent portion of the section 1.- The bellows which is preferably of soft leather is of sufficient extent to permit full relative movement of the adapter sections, and maintains the otherwise open parts light proof in the relativeoutward movement of the section 2.
The plate pack 19, 20, is simply placed in the section 1, after the back is swung out wardly, the respective parts of thepack being automatic-ally fixed with relation to the corresponding sections of the adapter, as described.
The section 2 of the adapter is then operated to transfer the plates of the pack through a relative outward and then inward movement of the section2, the section lin- Theadapter of this invention comprises terlocking with the camera structure, as is edge shoulders formed by projections 16 on usual. A finger piece 18 may be secured on w the bar 11 if desired, for convenience in operating the section 2.
The adapter and plate pack when assembled, as described above, are placed in a camera of usual construction for plate packs, with the opening 3 of the adaptertoward the'camera lens. The first outward movement of the section 2- and the outer section 19 of the plate pack connectedthereto, withdraws the first plate 21, usually a protecting blank, of the plate pack from its place in front of the pack and it is transferred to the rear of said pack by the inward movement of said sections, in the manner described in the application identified above. The sensitized plates are thereafter exposed in the usual manner and the-.outward-and inward movements of the section 2 and its connected parts are repeated after the exposure of each plate until each'-plate..has
been exposed. The exposure and subsequent transfer of the plates as above described finally brings the protecting blank plate 21 into the foremost position it occupied at the beginning of the operations. At this point, the plate pack 19, 20, containing the plates 21, is removed from the adapter and a new plate packi substituted therefor, in the manner described above, and the series of operations repeated. The use of the ada ter with the plate pack, as above descri d, serves to reduce the cost of the plate pack, per se, when a number of plate packs are to be used in a camera.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A plate pack adapter comprising a receiving section having channels therein, an operating section including a cross bar to close the open end of the receiving section, and guide bars depending from said cross bar and slidably fitting the channels in the receiving section. V v
2. A plate pack adapter comprising t. receiving section having channels therein, an operating section including. a cross bar to close the open end of the receiving section, and guide bars depending from said cross bar and slidably fitting the channels in the receiving section, said guide bars being formed to interlock with one section of the plate pack.
3. A plate pack adapter, comprising a re ceiving section having channels therein, an
foperating section including a cross bar to close the open end of the receiving section, and guide bars depending from said cross .bar and slidably fitting the channels in the receiving section, and means on the receiving section to interlock with one part of the plate pack.
.Intestimony whereof I afiix my signature.
SHERMAN M. FAIRCHILD.
