Description

W; B. WATSON.
Shirts.
N0. 143,108. Patented September23,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. WATSON, OF SOMERVILLE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,108, dated September 23, 1873 application filed July 10,1873.
`To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. WATSON, of Somerville, in the county of Fayette and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being `had to the accompanying drawings, which form v toned at the middle of the bosom, the bosom overlapping and buttoning at the side and on the shoulder, and supported and carried by an extension of the collar-band, buttonin g at the side of the neck, so that by moving the buttons slightly the shirt will be made larger or smaller at pleasure, and fit perfectly on the shoulders and about the neck.
My invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view with the bosom buttoned to the yoke at the shoulder, and the yoke extended, as indicated by dotted lines, under the bosom and buttoned to the collarband at the center of the bosom. Fig. 2 is a broken section, showing the yoke extended and fastened to the collar-band; and Fig. 3 is a back View of my invention.
A Al is the yoke, extending to and slightly past the center of the bosom; it has inserted the gore B to give a neat it over the shoulder; it is stitched to the collar-band O, to which is seWed the button a, and is also stitched to the button-plait f, and forms a brace or support for the part g of said collar-band. D is the bosom, made open at the side, andprovided with the plaits b and c, in which are worked button-holes. The half of the bosom overlapping the yoke A is stitched to and carried by an extension, d, of the collar-band, which extends to the side of the neck, where it buttons, and has stitched to it the end of the plait c, and is provided with the buttonhole e. c are buttons.
It will be seen that by removing the buttons a a the size of the neck may be enlarged or diminished at pleasure.
The yoke permits an adjustment about `,the
`neck of the wearer, so that in changing the buttons the bosom will not be drawn to one side, and the buttonhole e will always be preserved in its central position. No wrinkles will be formed except it may be a slight one at one or the other of the lower corners of the bosom; but it will not be of such character as to alter the Iit or smooth appearance of the bosom. l
The shirt may be made so that the bosom will open on either side.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A shirt having the bosom D, yoke A A', and collar-band C, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of June, 1873.
WILLIAM B. WATSON.
