' will he etlicient and reliable and will come into contact with the road only where the same soft and muddy or when it is covered with snow.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and eilicient structure of this nature which will be durable, comparatively ii'ienpensive to manufacture, reliable in op,- eration, and well adapted to the purpose for .vhich it is designed.
lilith these general objects in view and others that will appearas the nature of the invention is better understood, the same con sists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
ln the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of the structure embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan thereof,
Figure '3 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Figure 1,
Figure is alongitudinal section taken substantially on the line 1 4 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Figure 4 looking in the direction of the arrow, and
Figure 6 is a detailed perspective of a block used in conjunction with the structure of this invention.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that 1 designates the main rim which may be of any preferred construction and attached to the felly of a wheel (not shown) in any suitable manner. This rim is provided at its edges with the turn-up annular flcfuiges 2, ,et circular band 3 is adapted to be situated in the rim 1 between its raza serial Na-561,644.
flanges' Qesis :shown to f-advantage in Figtu-res3andf5. -Afplurality of bloclrsic are" disposed about the band 3 in spaced relation to each other. Each block 4l comprises an elongated body provided on its inner face with a ridge 5 while the outer face thereof is iiat throughout its major portion while the endsfof this face are curved asy at 6. These blocks 4- are held in place by the bolts 7 which pass through the apertures 8 in the blocks a and also through the band The outer ends of the bolts are provided with sharpened projecting lugs 9. A cleat 10 is also situated along one of the sides of each of the blocks 4. n
pair of auxiliary rims 11 rest upon the curved'portions 6 of the outer faces of the blocks a and these two auxiliary rims are provided with the extending outer anges 12 which are engaged by the transversely extending bolts 13 soas to prevent cutting thereof and holding the rims in engagement with the blocks. A plurality of inwardly extending legs 14 are provided on the auxiliary rims 11 and they are arranged in pairs so as to engage the sides of the blocks fl and the. ends of each pair are engaged by the bolts 16.
The auxiliary rims 11 have therein suitable'tires 17 which may be either of the solid variety or pneumatic variety or of any other suitable construction, It will thus be seen that the wheel provided with my structure when the same sinks to some extent into mud or snow the lugs 9 and cleats 10 will prevent skidding and slipping thereof. -The present modification which I have described in detail refers only to the preferred example of my invention and it is to beunderstood that numerous changes in construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention what .l claim as new is 1. In combination, a band, a plurality of blocks iixed to the band in spaced relation to each other, and a pair of rims mounted on the blocks in spaced relation to each other.
2. In combination. a band, a plurality of biocks fixed to the band in spaced relation to each other, and a pair .of rims mounted on the blocks in spaced relation to each other, a plurality of inwardly extending on the blocks, legs depending from the rims and arranged in pairs so as to embrace the blocks and a bolt connecting the ends of each pair of legs.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH S. JAKUBOWSKI.
