To all whom it may rmwern:
Be it known that I, Janus jeet of Great Britain, and resident of Butler, in the county of Butler and State of ennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grinding and Polishing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact deseription thereof.
My invention refers to new and useful improvements in machines for grinding and polishing slabs or plates of material. such for example as marble, glass or the like, and the invention particularly pertains to murhines of the above character as disclosed in my patent for improvements in grinding and polishing machines, No. 1,375,121 pair ented April 19, 1921.
The particular object of my present iii-- vention is to provide a plurality of hurnislr in shoes having a compound planetary action upon the Work, whereby the time rcquired for eompletinga grinding and polishing operation is materially reduced, thus increasing the efficiency of the machine to a maximum without materially increasing the cost thereof.
\Vit-h the above and other minor objects in View, the invention consists in certain of construction. eomhination of hereinafter set forth with refen ring illustrations and peculiarities parts as are enoe to the aecompan subsequently claimed.

Referring by eharacters to the drawings, 1 represents an overhead frame. vrhieh frame is associated with a reciprocated table :2 for supporting the slabs to be burnished and polished.

Hence, it will be seen that the gear wheel 4 will impart rotary motion to the shaft 3, while at the same time said shaft is capable of longitudinal movement within the gear hub. The upper end of the shaft is extended through a threaded sleeve 5, whit-h sleeve is loosely mounted within the bearing a and engaged by the threaded hub of an adjusting gear Wheel 5'. The upper end of the shaft is supported by nuts or collar-.5 (3. which are in threaded union with said end, whereby a predetermined longitudinal adjustment of the shaft is bad, and the said main drive shaft is intermittently adjusted vertically by rotation of the gear Wheel .1 ahoul the threaded sleeve 5, whereby a seri s of hurnishing shoes to he hcreiiult'ter itielltti to. are mieromieally adjusted with relation to the face ofthe date to he bsrnished or polished.
The lower end of the main drive shaft 3 has secured thereto a. master head 7, which master head. shown in Figures 1 Hit} 2, at its outer end, is termed with hubs 7' t lat constitute journals for vertiraily disposed arbors 8. It follows that the burnish'lng heads carrying the shoes he revolved in either direction, depending upon an arbitrary selection of driving gears, and that this same result can 'be varied by difi'erent arrangw merits of the train of gears, with respect to the main drive shaft.
Referrin be observe that the urnishing heads are formed .with four arms, and in this exemplification of my invention, thefixed mas ter gear Wheel and fixed auxiliary gear wheel impart direct drive to the hu rnishmg shoes, whereby their direction of rotation is varied from the direction of rotation shown by the structure in Figures 1 and 2. words, in this last exemplification of my invention, the idle or intermediate gear wheels are dispensed with. Obviously, the train of gears for carrying out, my invention now be varied to produce greater or less speed,
particularly to Figure 3, it will and also to vary the dirction oi travel of llic hurnishing shoes with relation to their movement; about the main drive shaft.
