CAN COVER.
Application filed August 15, 1921. Serial No. 492,382.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED H. J ONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Globe, in the county of Gila and State of Arizona,
have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Can Covers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
Ordinary garbage can covers are comparatively light and are easily blown about by the wind and are thus liable to be damaged by being run over by vehicles, or lost. This invention has for its object to provide a weighted cover for garbage cans or the like, and which is of such construction that it may be shipped unweighted, and the weighting material be added by the user. To this end the improved can cover is provided with a chamber having a removable closure preferably in the form of a screw cap and which closure may be opened or removed by the user and the chamber be filled with some heavy material of granular or comminuted form. For the weighting material finely broken up stone or sand which is very cheap, may be employed; or, if desired, some metallic material in fine form may be used as the weighting medium.
In the accompanying drawing, which is a central sectional View of the improved can cover, 12 denotes the top portion of the can cover, which may be of any ordinary or suitable construction, and which, in the present instance, is provided with a depending flange l3 and with a handle 14. These parts are formed of sheet metal, as is .usual, and attached to the under side of the upwardly tapering top 1.3, as by solder, is a concave or dish-formed disk 15 of sheet metal be tween which and the said top is a chamber 16. Attached to the central part of the disk 15 is a depending threaded metal sleeve 17 to which is fitted a screw cap 18.
From the foregoing it will be understood that when the screw cap 18 is removed and the cover reversed the chamber 16 may be filled with any kind of heavy granular material which will make the cover sufliciently heavy so that it cannot be readily displaced from the vessel to which it is fitted. The heavy granular weighting material which, as hereinbefore stated, may be sand, gravel or some kind of metallic granular material, as shot or the like, will be placed in the chamber 16 after the cover has arrived at its destination, and from this it results that the finally weighted cover may be shipped in a light or unweighted form, thereby saving costof transportation.
The top portion 12 of the cover is preferably provided with an annular hollow bead 19 into the chamber of which the outer edge of the disk 15 extends and in which chamber the said outer edge of said disk is secured by solder 20.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A weightable garbage can cover comprising an upwardly tapering top portion provided with an annular hollow head, a dishlike downwardly sloping disk the outer edge of which extends into the chamber aflorded by said hollow bead and attached to the under side of said top portion at said bead by solder, thus forming a chamber of considerable. size adapted to hold a substantial amount of heavy material, said disk being provided with a depending threaded sleeve, combined with a screw cap fitted to said sleeve.
In testimony whereof I affix my si nature FRED H. JO ES.-
