INVENTOR .4 TTOHWEY I Patented Sept. 19, 1922.
PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. ASH, OF HAGERSTOWN, MARYLAND.
QUICK-DETACHABLE VEHICLE WHEEL.
Application med August 6,1919. Serial No. 315,559.
To allwhomitmayconcem:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. AsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ha erstown, in the county of Washington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quick- Detachable Vehicle Wheels, of which the eflicient in service, and which is ofimprovedappearance. 5
A further object is to provide an outer hub for wire spoked wheels' which is structurally superior and functionally advan-- tageous.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a typical preferred embodiment of the invention and shows, in
b igure 1, an end elevation of the improved hu v Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section thereof; and A a Fig. 3, a. detailed section on the line BB of F1 1.
Ret erring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown a hub" of pressedsteel comprising an enlarged flange 1 at its inner end, a smaller flange 2 at its outer. end, and an intermediate body 3. In manufacture, a plurality (in the present instance six) of axially disposed, open bosses or sockets 4 are punched from the body 3 adjacent the inner spoke flange 1. The bosses 4 are at equal distances radially of the center of the hub and are symmetrically spaced circumferentially; These bosses are open at both ends and are adapted to receive the extremities of corresponding driving lugs on the inner hub when the wheel is mounted.
To facilitate the mounting of "the wheel, there are provided two metal fillers 5 radially opposite and positioned between adjacent bosses 4. The fillers 5 are preferably curved concentrically 'of the hub and are of a dimension so that their surface lies flush with the inner ends of the bosses. In mounting the wheel, consequently, if the hub does not occupy a relative rotary position to receive the driving pins, certain of the latter will abut the fillers 5, whereupon the outer hub may be readily rotated while pushed inward until the open bosses registerwith the driving pins.
In order to seal the openings through bosses 4, there is provided a thin metal rin' orannulus 6 having a central opening suc that the ring may be fitted past the hub flange 2 and t-he'inner edge of the ring forced or sprung on the body 3, Where the latter is fed inward-at 7. The ring 6 is suflic'iently wide so that its outer edge overlaps some what the outer surface of the hub flange 1,
and the ring is shaped to aflord a'smooth substantially continuous wall with the adj acent walls of the hub. In practice, the ring 6 may have a driving fit with the hub shell at 7, or may be secured to the shell, as by welding along the overlapping edge 8.
The construction of the hub as described is p'articularly-advantageous in that the cost of manufacture thereof is kept at a minimum, while, on account of the material used and the construction, adequate strength is insured to resist the driving shocks encountered in service. The bosses 4 open at both ends are thus adapted to receive the driving pins and allow the hub to be pressed snugly home, so that the fixed ends of said pins are closely encircled by the walls of bosses 4. At the same time the hub is sealed against the entry of foreign matter through the openings and presents an exteriorly imperforate appearance.
Having described my invention, what I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is g In a'quick detachable vehicle Wheel hub,
in combination, a pressed metal shell having an enlarged spoke flange at one end and having adjacent axially open bosses struck inward from the body of the shell, and means between certain of said bosses substantially flush with the ends thereof, for the purpose set forth. 7
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES S. ASH.
