To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELMER O. BnAnns nY and WALTER F. PIPER, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mold ing Apparatus for Founding, of which the following is a full, clear, andexact desorip tion.
The invention relates to apparatus used in projecting sand int-o flasks to make moulds used in metal founding. In the practice of the invention in Letters Patent No. 1,309,833 granted to us July 15, 1919, it has been found to be impossible to project and properly pack sand in some portions of flasks which are formed with decidedly inwardly and upwardly convergent walls or wit-h undercut spaces, through a constricted inlet opening at the top, because the sand projected downwardly at a substantially nonvariant angle would leave unfilled spaces or loose sand in the pockets under the convergent sides or which are otherwise inaccessible.
The primary object of the invention is to provide means for conveniently manipulating such flasks, so that all portions thereof will be properly packed and filled by sand projected downwardly through the usual top-openings therein.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
Inthe drawings: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of apparatus embodying the invention. Fig. 1 is a detail of the projector. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, taken on line 22 of Fig. 3, ofthe apparatus forcarrying and manipulating the flasks. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, parts being shown in section.
The apparatus is exemplified in a'portable carriage which permits the flasks to be readily delivered to and removed from the projector and comprises axles 4 sustained by carrying-wheels 5 and side-frames 6 rigidly secured to the axles and provided with standards 7. A flask-carrier is pivotally sustained by a rod 8 which is carried by the upper ends of standards 7 and comprises Specification of Letters Patent.

A flask 13, having upwardly convergent side-walls 14, between which is formed a constricted longitudinally extending opening 14" to receive the molding. sand, end-walls 15 and an open bottom, is adapted to rest on the patternplate of the tiltable carrier and hold the sand around the patterns to form one section of a mould for founding. Studs 22 on the carrier are adapted to pass through holes in lugs 23 on the flask to relatively position the pattern-plate and flasks and hold them against relative lateral movement.
This apparatus is particularly'adapted to support the pattern-carrier and flask under a sand-projector of the type set forth in our aforesaid Letters Patent No. 1,309,833, in which the projector is movable horizontally in any direction to fill all portions of amould by projection of the sand downwardly ina non-variant direction. This machine comprises a projector comprising a casing 16, a rapidly revolving rotor16 with projectorbladelG to project wads of sand downwardly at high speed. A motor 17 for driving the rotor; an arm 18 which is pivoted at 19 and by which the motor and projector are supported in operative relation; a jib 20 to the outer end of which arm 18 is pivoted and which is pivoted on a standard 21, and suitable means for feeding sand in regulated quantity to the projector for rapidprojection. For a more detailed description of such a machine, reference may be had to our said patent.
In filling a flask with a constricted inlet or undercut portions or pockets not directly accessible from the top, as exemplified by the flask for making pipe-moulds illustrated in the drawings, thesand would not properly fill those portions of the mould which 1 lie under the outer portions of the sides 14 and more particularly those portions adjacent the. outer sides of the patterns 10. To make it possible to fill flasks of this character, the flask-carrier is pivotally supported by rod 8, so the flask may be tilted to either side to bring the inlet opening of the flask and the undercut portions of its Walls into position so the line of delivery of the sand will be downward in the proper-direction to p pack the sand into such portions, shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
-Mechanism is provided for securing the flask and carrier in different positions and for this purpose a segmental rack Qt is fixed to one of the standards 7 and a toothed block which is carried by and slidable on a lever 26 and is movable into and out of mesh with the rack by the lever. The latter is pivoted to the carrier at 27 and is provided with a handle 28 positioned adjacent a handle 29 fixed to the carrier. Lever 26 is normally held in position to hold the block locked to rack 24 by a spring 30 which has one of its ends connected to the inner end of the lever, as at 31, and its other end connected to the carrier, as at 32. In order to cushion the flask and carrier in their different positions, springs 33 and 34 are interposed between the ends of the locking-block 25 and abutments on lever 26.
' In operation, the flask is placed on the carrier, and the carriage is then moved into range of the projector of the molding machine. The operator will then release the carrier and "tilt it so the flask will be positioned to permit the downwardly projected wads of sand from the projector to pass through the inlet opening of the flask and directly to the spaces between the outer sides of the patterns and the flask-sides, and will then set the locking-lever so the carrier and flask will be retained in said position. The projector will then be operated to project sand into and to pack it in that portion of the flask which is then in the direct line and path of projection to form the corresponding portion of the mould. Then the carrier and flask will be tilted and set into oppositely inclined position, so as to bring the space between the outer side of the other pattern and the other flask-side in the line and path of. projection intersecting the inlet opening. The projector will be over the flask until this space has been filled and packed with sand. Next, the carrier and flask will be set into horizontal position and the projector will be operated to fill all of the unfilled space between and over the patterns and until the flask has been completely filled and uniformly packed with sand. During each step of this operation, the projector will be shifted longitudinally of the flask to fill one portion thereof from end to end. The filled flask will then be lifted ofl the carrier and placed with a mating flask to form a complete mould. In all positions, the carrierand flask will be cushioned by springs 33 and 3st and, as a result, there will be no excessive spattering of the sand by the impact of the sand against the surfaces and sand in the flask which results in high speed projection. This cushioning is also advantageous in lessening the tendency of the projected sand to displace the apparatus when it is mounted on a portable carriage.
The invention exemplifies apparatus for filling flasks by high-speed projection in which provision is made for filling covered or undercut spaces. or those which are inaccessible to sand projected in a constant direction in the flasks.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In apparatus for making moulds, the combination of a support, a flask on said support and means vtor sustaining the flask so the flask may be tilted relatively to a constant direction of projected sand so that such sand will be projected into the flask at different angles and will be packed in undercut or otherwise inaccessible spaces in the flask.
2. In apparatus for making moulds, the I combination of a tiltable flask-carrier provided with a pattern-plate, a flask on said plate having an inlet opening in its top, and means for tilting the carrier relatively to sand projected in a constant direction so that such sand will be projected into the flask at different angles and will pack the sand in undercut or otherwise inaccessible spaces in the flask.
3. In apparatus for making moulds, the combination of a support, a flask on said support, means for sustaining the flask so the flask may be tilted relatively to a con stant direction of projected sand so that such sand will be projected into the flask at different angles and will be packed in undercut or otherwise inaccessible spaces in the flask, and means for holding the flask in different positions.
4. In apparatus for making moulds, the
combination of a tiltable flask-carrier provided with a pattern-plate, a flask on said plate having an inlet opening init-s' top, means for tilting the carrier relatively to sand projected in a constant direction so that such sand will be projected into the flask at different angles and will pack the sand in undercut or otherwise inaccessible spaces in the flask, and means for holding the carrier in diflerent positions.
5. In apparatus for making moulds, the combination of a portable carriage, a flaskcarrier, a flask removably held on the carrier, and means supporting the carrier so it may be tilted on the carriage relatively to a constant line of sand projecting so that such sand will be projected into the flask at diflerent angles and will be packed in undercut and otherwise inaccessible spaces in the flask and around the pattern.
6. In apparatus for making moulds, the combination of a portable carriage, a flaskcarrier, a flask removably held on the carrier, means supporting the carrier so it may be tilted on the carriage relatively to a constant line of sand projection so that such sand will be projected into the flask at different angles and will be packed in undercut and otherwise inaccessible spaces in the flask and around the pattern, and means for holding the carrier in different positions.
7. The combination with a machine comprising a sand projector, of a flask, and means to support the flask so it maybe tilted relatively to a constant line of sandprojection, so that sand will be projected into the flask at different angles and will be packed in undercut and otherwise inaccessible spaces in the flask, the projector being movable laterally over the flask.
8. The combination with a machine comprising a sand projector, of a flask, means to support the flask so it may be tilted relatively to a constant line of sand-projection,
so that sand will be projected into the flask at diflerent angles and will be packed in undercut and otherwise inaccessible spaces in the flask, the projector being movable laterally over the flask, and means for holding the flask in different positions.
9. The combination with a machine comprising a sand-projector mounted to project sand at a non-variant angle of delivery and movable laterally, of a carrier, a flask removably held on the carrier, and means to support the carrier so the flask may be tilted relatively to the line of projection, so that sand will be projected into the flask at different angles and will be packed in undercut and otherwise inaccessible spaces in the flask.
10. The combination with a machine comprising a sand-projector mounted to project sand at a non-variant angle of delivery and movable laterally, of a carrier, a flask removably held on the carrier, means to support the carrier so the flask may be tilted relatively to the line of projection, so that sand will be projected into the flask at different angles and will be packed in undercut and otherwise inaccessible spaces in the flask, and means for holding the carrier in different positions.
11. In apparatus for making molds for founding, the combination of a flask, a carrier on which the flask is fixedly held, a support, and springs between the carrier and the support to cushion the flask and carrier from impact caused by the delivery of sand into the flask.
12. In apparatus for making moulds for founding, the combinationof a support, a
flask, means to pivotally sustain the flask on the support, and cushioning means for the flask operative to cushion it while it is being filled with sand.
13. The combination with a molding machine comprising a sand-projector, of a support for a flask, a flask on said support, and cushioning-means for the flask.
14. The combination with a molding machine comprising a sand-projector, of a flask-carrier comprising a pattern-plate, a
flask removably held on said plate, a support for the carrier and cushioning means between the carrier and the support.
