T 0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, DARWIN S. KARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Folders and Picture Frames, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined folder and picture frame and has for an obj ect the provision of a blank form of flexible material, which blank when properly bent will act as a mailing folder for holding some object therein, and which blank when open and properly cut and creased will form an ornamental picture frame.

In practicing the invention 1 provide a blank of flexible material which is creased along longitudinal sides thereof to form flaps, and likewise creased at the bottom edge to form a transverse flap. The folder is bent at a median portion, and the lowermost flap extends over its opposite transverse edge, whereupon a sticker may join the body portion of the blank and the flap and securely retain any medium such as a picture within said folder. It is understood -of course that a picture or any other object enclosed within the folder would be retained between the edges of the longitudinal flap members so as to prevent said picture or other object from escaping from the folder. Within the folder proper are lines, certain of which are shown dotted and others of which are solid. It is intended that the dotted lines should be cut and that the folder should be bent upon the solid lines. When the folder has been properly bent and cut an ornamental picture frame is formed. Ordinarily the interior of the blank is decorated with various colors so that a high-grade I picture frame results when properly cut and folded. A device of this character will be useful in motion picture work, as the various screen stars receive numerous inquiries from admirers requesting photographs. Ordinarily this requires a secretarys assistance in writ-- ing a letter and sending a photograph and providing a folder for the photograph. With this combined folder and picture frame it would be an easy matter to print a short history of the star upon the interior of the folder and then enclose the stars photograph, provide the folder with a nec' essary sticker and mail it. It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a com bined folder and picture frame which will act in a two-fold capacity and at the same time provide a satisfactory means for the purposev stated and at a minimum of expense. I do not wish to be understood as confining this invention simply to the purpose'above mentioned, as plenty of uses for said folder and picture frame will readily suggest themselves.

The invention has for further objects the provision of an improved folder and picture frame which is simple and inexpensive and will be generally durable.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel and useful provision and formation of an improved folder and picture frame combined in one blank form, all of which is disclosed in the accompanying drawings and described in the following statement and finally pointed out in claims.

Referring with particularity tothe drawings, A designates the blank form of which 1 representsa folder and 2 a picture frame. The folder of course includes the picture frame 2 and the picture frame 2 includes the folder 1. However, I wish to be under stood as designating thefolder 1 as being formed on the obverse side of the blank A, and the picture frame 2 representing the results of cutting and creasing certain lines on the reverse surface of the blank A. The folder 1 is formed by creasing the longitudinal edge portions along the lines 29 of, the blank A so as to form flaps 5 and 6 and likewise creasing the blank A transversely at one end as'lO to form a flap 8. The blank A is then bent as at 9 and one side is returned upon itself and the flap 8 bent over said returned portion to form the folder shown in Figure 1. A sticker 10 may be placed upon the flap 8 and the body portion of the folder 1 so as to retain any material such as a picture within said folder 1. 'The surface of the folder 1 may be provided with dotted lines as 11. upon which an address may be written and a corner as 12 may be provided a place for a postage stamp. It will thus be "seen that a picture placed beneath the flaps 5' and 6 and then locked by the flap 8 will positively be retained within said folder 1.

The frame 2 is formed as has been stated by cutting certain dotted lines and creasing certain solid lines. The lines in question are printed upon the reverse surface of the blank A. Referring to Figure 41- it will be observed that certainlines are solid and other lines are dotted, and it is the intention to cut the dotted lines. As far as the ornamental portions of the picture frame are concerned,- the above description; is sulficient. However, to form the picture frame from the blank A shown in Figures 2 and f the operation in detail is shown in the remaining figures, and may be described as lines Z) with some sharp instrument so as to penetrate all the way through the blank A. The lines 25 and 26 should next be bent either toward the observer or away from him, so as to form a downward or upward crease along said lines. Then the flaps 0; are each again bent in a contrary direction along the lines 27 and 28. It will be observed that the lines 25, 26, 2'7 and 2S designate opposite parallel lines in each case. A proper bending of the respective lines will result in a formation as shown in Figures 9 and 10. The outer surface of the frame which is presented to the observers view is now formed by creasing downwardly upon the lines 29 and 80 after cutting the lines 31, 32, 33, 3a and 85 in each corner. This will result in the removal of a portion of the blank included outwardly between the lines 81, 33 and 34;, as is clearly shown by Figures 6 and 11. The frame is then folded upon the opposite parallel lines 36 and 37 in an inward direction, or in other words, returned upon itself so as to form a back surface '0 for the frame 2. Itwill be observed that the cutting of the blank A; along the lines 33, 34 and 35 will form two opposite triangular portions d and e, and that the cutting along the lines 31 will com pletely remove the corner, as has been described. hitting along the, line 32 aids in forminga lock, and it will be observed that the line 32 has an angularly disposed cut portion. Referring to Figure 6, the triangular portions (Z and e are bent inwardly, and then one of the flap portions as 38 formed by cutting along the line 32 is bent upwardly so as to permit another flap portion as 39 to pass under the same. In Figure 8 it will be observed that the flap portion 38 has nowpermitted the flap portion 89 to pass under the same and that a flap portion 4-0 has passed over a flap 41 so as to form a square edge corner for the frame. By causing thefiap' lO to engage with the off-set portion of the cut dotted line 32, the edges of said flap portions will be caused to interlo'ckand form a rigid construction for the corner. In fact, the triangular members (Z and 6 will also aid in forming a rigid corner. Figure 11 likewise shows the frame construction before folding the same to form-the corners just described, and it will be ob served that a proper combining of the corners will allow the respective flaps formed to interlock and construction.

provide a rigid 1 ,aaacae The picture should be inserted before the corners have been locked with each other and the picture may be readily inserted by bending up the flaps a on the back of the picture frame and inserting the picture into the groove formed for the same between the bent edges 25 and 27, 26 and 28, as shown in Figures 9 and 10. In fact, the portion confined between the bent portions 25 and 27, 26 and 29, are of Z-like formation, being smaller upon the inner rim portion of the frame included by the lines 25 and 26 than that portion included by the lines 27 and 28. If desired, a glass could be inserted in the space so formed and a picture placed under the glass. The flaps a are then bent upon the picture and the corner members locked. It will be obvious that when the corner members are locked the picture will be retained in place, inasmuch as the flap members a are incapable of again being opened.

Figures 9 and 10 illustrate the final posi tion of a picture P within my frame.

It is obvious that the combined picture frame and folder described presents many novel features and that many changes and modifications in the folding of the same may be made, all, however, within a fair interpretation of the'invention.

Having thus disclosed my invention, 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A combined folder and picture frame, comprising a blank having a central portion provided with intersecting indications as to cutting the same to form flaps, said blank likewise being provided with a frame portion between which and such flaps a picture may be retained, the flaps permitting the insertion of the picture in place.

2. A combined folder and picture frame, comprising a blank having a central portion provided with intersecting indications as to cutting the same to form flaps, said blank likewise being provided with a frame portion between which and such flaps a picture may be retained, the flaps permitting the insertion of the picture in place; said frame having its inner edge portions so bent as to form a retaining edge for said picture.

3. A combined folder and picture frame, comprising a blank having a central por tion of one side provided with indications as to a cutting and folding of same to form a picture frame, while the other side has indications for forming a folder for confining an object therein to permit mailing same.

5. A combined folder and picture frame, comprising a blank having a central portion of one side provided with indications as to a cutting and folding of same to form a picture frame, while the other side has indications for forming a folder for confining an object therein to permit mailing same; certain of the indications forming flaps; said bent portion of the inner edge being in the form of a Z and included between the fiaps and outer surface members of the frame.

6. A combined folder and picture frame, comprising a blank having a central portion of one side provided with intersecting indications as to a cutting and folding of the same to form a picture frame having a back and front members spaced from each other by intermediate marginal members, while the other side of the blank has indications for forming a folded for confining an object therein to permit mailing of same.
