Description

UNITED SITA PATENT OFFICE ARTHURM. rA'rUREAU, or BnAUMoN'r, TEXAS.'
SHUTTER FOR MOTION-PICTURE MACHINES.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
`Patented Aug. 22, 1922.
Application filed August 18, 1921. Serial No. 493,406.
tain new and useful Improvements in` Shutters k:for Motion-Picture Machines, of
i which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved shutter for motion picture machines and has as one of its principal objects to provide a device of this character which will `eliminate flickering.
The invention has afurther object to provide a shutter constructed to permit the passage of a portion of the light therethrough during the period of occultation to thus avoid the sharp contrast which would otherwise occur between full illumination of the screen and total darkening thereof.
And the invention has as a still further object to provide a shutter` so constructed that the light rays will be uninterrupted in minimum duration consistent with a complete obscuration of the effect produced by shift- `infr of the lm. i y
@ther and incidental objects will appear y opening therethrough and provided with small holes near said opening to accommodate fastening devices securing a hub to the shutter, a hub being employed, of course, for mounting the shutter upon the drive shaft. of the present invention it has not been illustrated. Extending radially from the por- Y tion 1() of the shutter at one side thereof is a segmental blade 11 in which is formed a plurality of radially disposed rows of relatively small holes 12. Five rows of these holes are preferably employed and, as will be noted, there are four holes in Since the hub forms no partr each row, making a total of twenty openings, corresponding holes of the rows belng, in each instance, disposed on an arc concentric to the axis of the shutter. Extending radially from the central portion 10 of the shutter at its opposite side are spaced Iblades 13 and connecting all of the blades is a rim 14 integral with said blades.
It is now to be noted that the blades 13 `are of equal area and are separated by any total kdarkening of the screen will be avoided. At the same time, the eii'ect produced by shifting the film'will be completely obscured. `The blades 13 are provided `to intercept the light rays during the period of illumination so as to counterbalance the effect produced by the interception of the light rays by the blade 11. As a result, sharp contrasts in the lighting of the screen are avoided and flickering is eliminated. As will be observed, relatively large openings are provided betweenv the blade 1l and each of the blades 13 while, as previously stated, between the blades 13 is an opening corresponding in area to the area ofveach of said blades. Accordingly, the screen will be fully illuminated for a major portion of the time for producing a bright sharp picture.
Havm thus described `the invention, what is c aimed as new is:
A shutter of the character described consisting of a central oircularportion, a blade extending from'one side of said central circular ortion and provided with perforations theret rough arranged in rows on radial lines land concentric arcs, equally spaced imperforate blades extending from the censpaces of greater area than any of the blades, and a rim connecting the outer edges of all the blades. l0
1n testimony whereof I affix my signature.
` ARTHUR M. PATUREAU.
