Application filed May 29,
To o-ZZww/m t may concern ,Be itlinown that I, RICHARD ZinsoHANG, a subject of the Kino' ofGreat Britain, and residing atrLondon, tngland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illops and lringing Attachments There? .'foi, of which the v'following is a specification.
This invention relates to mops providedy with wringing `appliances for use in wringheld either open `or closed vas required, and
is released from the closed position;
The inventionl is illustrated in the ac-` companying drawings, whereinr Figure 1 shows rthe complete 4mop with its head extended .for use,
Figures 2 and 3 are views to a larger scale showing in 'front ,and Aside elevation, the wringing attachment closed over the mop head.
Figures l and "5 are corresponding views `gto Figures 2 and 3, of the' mopy with the closed wringing attachment in section.
Figure '6 is al similar view to Figure 5, but. showing the flaps opened.`
Figure 7 is an external view of a modified form of the mop and wringer,"show ing the mop head enclosed in the box. Figure 8 is a sectional view, drawn to a larger scale, showing .the catchiand release, y,mechanism of the forni of construction'- shown in Figure 7.
Figure 9 is a detail view of the wringing box and mop head drawn to a larger scale, Figure lOviis an end view of the wringing box with the flaps closed.
Referring first to Figures l mop head, consisting of a ,-tuft or tufts of textile material attached to a cap?) secured to the end of a stein c. Upon thisstem slides a :sleeve e carrying at its end the box or wringer d. This boxl is made ,of -Imetah preferably with co-rrugations;pressedin the sides thereof `to allow of the escape ofthe ywater wrung not-ch in sleeve e, so holdingtheflalis` "n tot, o is the Speccation of Letters Patent. `13j,idjllsteffi 'Aw-11g. 22, 1922,

shown, in vorder-to strengthen `it 4and to' give effective wringing action when the mop is twisted withinit. Upon the jsleeve c works an outersleeve 7, which normallyy pressed up'by ak spring g` acting between lflanges on thesleeves e and f. The sleeve" carries lugs i'to which `connected links 7c, and the otherLends ofthesellinks arefconnected'to the flaps n which serve to close lthe box (Z when used Afor wr-ingingoutthe mop head a. The flaps n are carried by end lpieces'fm `pivoted atV 'Z on the .endsof the lbox 03. The flaps a are corrugated for wringing purposes, and are perforated as shown n out. The sleeve f has an ,extension fo ,at the top, inside which is a spring tongue p; when the sleeve fis pressed down against the action kof springvg, this tonguefengages with .closed as in Figure 5. y. A sliding rin g workingon sleeve e, has atapered end w'lig-ich serves, when pressed down, to vengage with outwardly bent vhorns on the tongue fp, pressing it lbackto disengagefitffromthe notch, and so allowing 'sleeve fito rise again and the fla-ps vito open, under .the action rof, spring g. The 4ring Q yis a shortLsect-ion ,of
tubing` with an enlarged head, this 4'tubing ,being a freeusliding t on sleeve @,but
indented at one or moreplaces ,to hold itv by friction vagainst unintentional movement.
A flange or 'collar on the sleeve e carries a projecting handles whereby tliesleev-e and the box Z thereon are held against turning during the wringing Hoperation. The end 'i of sleeve @above this is arranged-to 'engage 1 in any suitable way with the handgrip t` on the stern c, inorder tof-hold` up the wringattachinent whenA notrin use. For exfamp'le, spring tongues uinfthe gripft, with little lniobs thereon which engage in holes or notches at o in the sleeve e when it is pulled up, willv serve this purpose.' Theen gagement is released readilywhen required. by pressing downrgthe sleeve `@with suiIicient pressure( away fromvthe :grip t. "Buffersor rollers nw on Ithe corners yof the end ,pieces m ofV flaps nl prevent risk Aof damage being done by such corners stri-king againStpb-l' jects when the-mop is in use.. v The methodof yuse is asffollows Assum ing the mop head a to .havebeeli Ydipped in water or ,other liquid, while ,the headisfexposed f as -,in Figure l-the ,gripv -t 'islheld "to be drawn into the box d.
rcatches u engage with sleeve e.
sleeve e is pressed down causingl theinop The fiaps'n are closed, by pressing down the sleeve f; the spring g is compressed, while sleeve slides over sleeve e, untill the flaps a are closed and tongue p engages with the notch in sleeve e. Then the wringing is'eflected by pressing down the grip t towards handle s so as to squeeze the end of the mop against the flaps a, and twisting the grip t relatively to handle s, so as to turn the mop head a in the box CZ, whereby it .is twisted and wrung out effectively. When this is done, ring g is pressed down to release tongue p and allow spring g to lift sleeve f, opening the Haps n, whereupon the sleeve e can be pulled up by continued upward pulling on extension 0 of sleeve f, or on handle s until the The mop head is then exposed again as in Figure l and ready for use, in a damp condition but with the surplus moisture wrung out. After use, it is washed out in a buclret for example, and then wrung out as above described to malte it ready for further service.
In the modified forni ot ythe mop and wringer shown in Figures 7 and 8, the box d, of the wringer is made shorter, and approximately square in section, but with the corners chanifered. The niopliead a is secured in a dome-shaped cap Zi, by stitching kthrough holes at b2, while the cap itself is secured by a pin c2 on the end of the tubular mop stem c1. The box Z1 is connected to the sleeve el by arms e2. The flaps or shutters n, are made with fingered end plates and with round bars extending across the opening `of the box when the flaps are closed. They are pivoted at n, `on the box, and connected by links or reins 7c, of springy metal, to the sleeve f1. Lugs a, on the sleeve c, serve to guide the reins 7s, and 'to prevent turning of the sleeve f1.
The sleeve el has a collai c, against which rthe spring g, bears, and it also has aprojecticn p, against which the spring catch p2 bears. This catch is shown as being formed on the end of one of the reins or links 7c, by which the shutters n, are opened and closed, the member 7c, being extended for this purpose beyond its attachment to the sleeve f1, and being arranged to project through a slot in the. said sleeve. Beyond this slot the sleeve f1 has a flange f2 to which attached a grip or handle f3. This grip is held while the inop stem c, is being turned to wring` out the mop head in the vbox all. Over the stem c1 Slides a releasing sleeve g1 projecting beyond the grip f3, and enlarged at its lower end so as to slide over the upper end of the sleeve el. A lateral projection QZ on the sleeve g1 has an inclined face whereby it .can lift out of action the spring catch p2 when sleeve g1 is .pressed down- 'wardly Beyond this projection the sleeve is slotted to allow of the passage of the projection p2 therethrough, andthe end of sleeve g1 has a flange g3 for the upper end of' spring g, to bear against. rThis flange in turn rests against an internal flange y, in the sleeve f1. ln order to provide an upward spring pressure tending to raise sleeve and sleeve g1 severally7 the sleeve f1 is provided with a bloclr f5 in front of' its flange f4 at one side, by which one edge of the spring g, is canted as shown. The result is that some spring pressure is opposed to the pressing down of sleeve g, to release catch p2, and a sufficient residual spring pressure is left against the bloclg f5 serving to raise sleeve f1 when released, and to prevent the ie-engagement of catch p2 with projection p1 so long as sleeve g1 is held. In this way a single spring is made to serve several different purposes.
ln use, after the mop has' been dipped in water it is drawn up into the box Z1 by holding the grip f3 in one hand, and drawing up ythe stem c, with the other. This movement is continued after the mop head has come to rest in 'the box and the stem c, can rise no further in sleeve e1. The further movement draws up sleeve e., inside sleeve y, until.
the catch p2 engages projection p, when the flaps or shuttersa1 will have been closed. Vilringing is then effected by twisting` the iiiop stem c, and pressing it down so that the mop head is pressed against the bars of the shutters nl. 1n' order to open out the mop again, the hand with which the grip was held is now used to grip the sleeve g1 and to push it down. This releases the catch p2, and when g1 is released the shutters spring open under the action of spring g, raising sleeve f1. The mop stem c, can now be pushed down to expose the mop head to any required extent, and to enable the mop to be used for cleaning or polishing` and so forth. Thr top of the sleeve q, will engage in the socket at the lower end of the grip if desired in order to hold the box Z1 raised with the mop head projecting to its fullest extent.
Although the mop and wringing attachnient have been described as it they were always made and sold as a complete article, lyet it will be apparent that the wringing attachment may bc sold separately from the mop, and may be used with existing mop heads and stems in so far as such mop heads have stems of a convenient size, such as that of the stein c in Figures l to 6, or the stem c, of Figures 7 and 8. The invention is not limited therefore to the combination of the mop and the wringing attachment but it in-A any suitable material and a :mopv head 'of for the sake of example.
