CAMPING- .ATTACHMENT FOR MOTOR VEHICLES.
razonar.
T 0 all whom t mag/'concord' Be it known that I, Lonnn Vil. RAY Airnnrsr, a citizen ofthe UnitedStates, residing at Mankato, in the county of Blue Earth and vState of Minnesota, have invented a ynew and useful Campingv Attache ment for'Motor Vehicles, of whichthe fol- This` inventionl` relates to a camping tachment adapted vvto be combined with an automobile, said attachment comprising a bed, a tent, anda luggage 'zarrier,l all of the parts being so constructed' that they can becarried conveniently at a point outside of the vehicle where they willnot cause inconvenience to theV persons riding within l the machine.
Another object is togprovide an outfit of this character which does not detract from the appearance ofthe vehicle .while vthe parts are collapsed but, on the contrary, has the appearance of and can be use-d as a luggage carrier.
Another object is to provide aV structure which can be set up quickly and will form a comfortable bed andan efficient shelter or tent. n v.
. With the foregoingvand other objectsin view which willappear as the description proceeds, ltherinvevntion resides.. in theconibination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being` understood that, within tlie'fscople of what is claimed, changes inthe precise embodiment of *the invention shown can be made lwithout doparting fromv the spirit-of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form ofthe invention has been shown. In said drawings Figure '1. is aside elevationk showing the outfit'set up for use as a bed and tent. i
Figure 2 is a plan view, the tent kor shelter being removed. I
Figure 3 is an end elevationiof a portion of the tent, andlshowingpone of the side flaps extended to lform a canopy. .l

Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 15, 1922 l Application led November 19,1921. I Serial No. 516,420. y 'i l A 'Figure 5 is a sideelevation of the `frame of thestructure collapsed for use as a luggage carrier. y
Figure is a detail view of'one end por'- tion of one of the side rails.v
A Referring yto the figures by characters of'v referencel designates one of the end membersof the structure, the terminals of this `member being adapted to' be fastened .bv clamps or other suitable devices, not shown,
to the rear end of an automobile.` From the bolts 8 one ofl which hasbeenshovvn iny Figure 1.
Those ends of the side rails 7 remote from the arms 2 are adapted to receive rods 9 which can befastened therein by bolts l0, these rods being extended from Y-connections 11. y@ne member of each connection-is extended .upwardly when the, apparatus isset up for use and has an inclined post 12 mounted thereinjfiinother ymember' of each"connectiony is extended-s` downwardly and is engaged by a standard 18 which forms a leg when the parts are set up for use as shown inz Figure l. The
, A covering or tenthas been. indicated'at 2O and oneend of thetop thereof is adaptedv y y to-'be buttoned or otherwisefastened to the l rear portion of thetop T of. an automobile. The pins 14 are designed to extend through openings in the top and the walls of the tent ico are designedto close the two sidesi'and the I bach end thereof as shown at 21. @ne of the side walls can be used a canopy or sunshade by extending it laterally and downwardly away from the tent and supporting it with posts 22 having pins 23 extending through openings in the supported flap. rfhis arrangement of parts has been shown both in Figures 1 and 3. By removing the posts 22 the supported iiap can be lowered and fastened.
As shown in Figure 1 bloclrs 24 correspending` with the blocks 3 can be secured to each yrod 9, these blocks being provided with recesses or seats from which holding pins 25 extend. These blocks are so positioned that they are supported under the rods 9 when the structure is setJ up as in Figure 1.
When it is desired to collapse the structure the tent covering is removed and formed into a compact bundle. The hooks 17 are withdrawn from the openings 16 and the bed bottom 19 together with the springs 18 is also compactly folded or rolled. The side rails 7 are then detached fromfthe arms 2 and the rods v9 and said rods are inserted into and secured within the arms 2 but with the standards 13 extended upwardly instead of downwardly. This arrangement has been shown in Figure 5. rlhe posts 12 are of course detached. With the parts thus arranged the side rails 7 are placed on certain of the blocks 3 and 24 so that the pins thereon will project into openings 26 formed in the side rails. The posts 12 are also placed in certain of said seats, these posts being provided with openings 27 to receive certain of the holding pins. The posts 22 need not be parts of thel apparatus but can be cut for use from timber conveniently situated.V `With the parts assembled as shown in Figure 5 the folded tent and the bed bottom structure can be fastened on the members 7 and 15 and other articles can likewise be supported on these members and between the vehicle bottom and the standards 13, the use of straps or ropes rendering the structure an efficient luggage carrier.
`What is claimed is 1. A structure of the class described including an end member for attachment to a vehicle, side arms extending therefrom, a second end member, side rods extending therefrom for attachment to the side arms, standards extending from said second end member, the said member being reversible to position the. standards for use either as supporting legs or as upstanding members, side rails insertible between and detachably connected to the arms and rods for holding the end members apart for use as bed frame, a
- bed bottom detachably connected'to the end members'and to` the side rails, and means upon the arms and rods for engaging and y'holding the side rails when arranged trans* `versely between the end members when the arms and rods are secured together.
2. The combination with an end member having side arms, of a second end member having side rods for detachably engaging the side arms, standards extendingr from said second member, side rails interposed between and detachably secured to the arms and. rods for holding the ends members spaced apart to form a bed frame, said s andards constituting supporting legs for the frame, a bed bottom detachably connected to the end members and side rails, said second end member being reversible and its rods attachable to the side-arms to form a luggage carrier, and meanson the side arms for holding the side rails transversely of the'luggage carrier.
rlhe combination with an end ymember for attachment to a vehicle and side arms extending therefrom, of 'a reversible end member, side rods extending therefrom, side rails adapted to be interposed between and secured to the arms and rods to form a'bed frame, standards on the reversible member constituting` supporting legs for the bed frame, said reversible end member being reversible to extend the legs upwardly with the rods in engagement with the side arms thereby to form a luggage carrier, a bed bottom, means for detachably connecting' the same to the bed frame, and means on the arms and rods for supporting and engaging the side rails when the structure is collapsed for use as a luggage carrier.
4.-. The combination with an end member for attachment to a vehicle and side arms extending therefrom, of a reversible end member, rods extending therefrom, standards connected to the reversible end member, posts detachably engaging the reversible end member, side rails interposedv between and secured to the arms and rods to form a bed frame, said standards constituting supporting legs for the bed frame, the reversible end member being adapted to be reversed to extend the standards upward, the rods beingvshiftable into engagement with the arms, a bed bottom, fmeans for detachably securing the bed bottom to the end members and side rails, and means on `the arms and rods for supporting and engaging the side rails and the posts when the rods are in engagement with the arms, thereby to form a luggage carrier, and a tent cover adapted to be vsupported in eX- tended position by the posts when mounted on the reversible end member.
5. rlhe combination with fixed and mova* ble end members, standards upon the movable end member, rods kextending from said movable member and arms extending from the fixed member and detachably` engaged by the rods, of side rails and posts mounted` on the arms and rods and cooperating with the ends members to form a luggage carrier, postsl and holding them in upstanding tent- 1o said movable end member being separable supporting positions.v v v from the fixed member and reversible, In testimony that I claim the foregoing means for securing the side rails between as my own, I have hereto afIXed my signathe two end members when the movable ture inthe presence of two witnesses.
