State of Illinois, have invented certain new' and useful Improvements in Elevator-Door Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in elevator door locks, and has for its principal object the provision of improved safety devices in connection with latching means by reason of which the means for driving the elevator may be thrown out of operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification, and in which,

Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates an elevator door provided with a latch member 11 in fixed position thereon near its upper end. 12 indicates a casing, of any approved type, inclosing my improved latching means, the casing 12 being mounted upon a portion the doorway is provided. A latch member 14, in the form of a bell crank lever, is-p1votally mounted upon a pin15 within the casing 12, being normally held in position by a spring 16 at the limit of its motion in clockwise direction as shown in Fig. 1. arm of the latch member 14. extends downwardly at right angles to the arm so, as to have operative engagement with the latch member 11 for holding the door 10 in its closed position, as is shown in Fig. 1. A bar 17 pivotally mounted at 18 upon the door 10 engages a pin 19 upon the latch member 14%, whereby a movement of the bar in clockwise direction in Fig. 1 serves to lift the switch 27 within the casing 12. The switch latch 14 out of operative engagement with the member 11 against the action of the spring 16 so as to permit the-door 10 to be.

The bar 17 is given the swinging movement for releasing the latch 14 through the medium of a rod 20 which is connected at its upper end withthe bar 17, its lower end being yieldingly supported by a spring 21 within a socket 22, as is shown in Fig. 3. The upper end-of the vertically extending arm 23 of the bell crank latch member 1 1 is provided with a pin 24 which is in engage- I ment with an open ended slot 25 formed in an arm 26 mounted upon a rotary "electric 27 comprises a body'portion formed of fiber, or other suitable insulating materiahh'aving a plate 28 of copper or other good conductor of electricity mounted thereon. In the construction shown, a second plate of copper 29 is also secured upon-the body of the switch, being separated from the plate 8 by means of a body of insulating material 30 of any suitable type. Brushes '81 and '32 are'mount ed upon a bracket 33 in position to engage the plate '28 at the time when the latch 14 is in operative latching position, the brushes 31 and 32 being connected bymeans of wires 3 1 and 35 in an electric circuit by whichthe operation of the elevator is controlled. As will be readily understood from an in spection of 1, when the latch member 14: is turned in counter-clockwise direction closing the circuit. It will be understood that, if desired, a condenser ofany suitable type may be connectedacrossthe circuit'fo r preventing objectionable sparking. I
Means is provided forpreventing the re-. turn of the latch me'mber 14 to locking position until after the door 1O is closed. This means comprises an arm 86 pivotallymourit ed upona pin 37 within thecasing-12. A
spring 38 tends to hold the arm 36 at the/ limit of its motion toward the right in said figure. The edge of the arm 36-is provided w th a plurality of notches 39 adapted to engage a shoulder 10 on the ad acent face of the horizontally extending arm of the latch member 14: when such arm is raised out of latching position, as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. By the provision of the catch device 86, the latch is held automatically out of latching position when retracted from latching position and at the same time the switch 27 is held open so as to-prevent operation of the elevator. For effecting subsequent operation of the elevator, it is necessary that the catch arm 36 be moved toward the left forreleasing the latch member 1'1. so as to permit the closing of the switch 27. The movement oi the arm 36 toward the left in said Fig. 1' is effected by the latch member 11 carried by the door being brought into contact with a laterally extending arm elf. carried by the arm 36' at its lower end. By this arrangement, I am assured that the switch 27 will not be closed for operating the elevator until after the door 10 has been closed.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for can rying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without depar'ing from. the spirit of the invention.

precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the class described comprising a pivotally mounted latch; an arm on said latch and provided with a pin; means with which said latch engages for holding a door against movement; and a rotary electric switch having an arm provided with a groove engaged by saidpin for actuating said switch when the latch is revolved into and out of latching position, substantially as described.
2. A. device of the class described comprising a movable latch in the form of a bell-crank lever; means with which said latch engages for holding a door against movement; an electric switch by the opening or which the elevator driving means is thrown out of operation; pin and groove connection between said lever and switch for closing and opening said switch by the movement of said latch into and out of latching position; an automatically acting catch adjacent to said latch adapted to en'- gage the latch when it is moved out of latching position and to hold the latch in retracted position; and means adapted upon the closing of the door to release said latch from said holding means for permitting a movement of the latch into latching position and for edecting a closing of the switch, substantially as described.
3. A device of the class described comprising a movable latch; means with. which aid latch engages for holding a door against movement-5 an electric switch by the opening of which the elevator driving means is thrown out of operation; means actuated by a movement of said latch into and out of latching position for closing and opening said switch; a spring-pressed catch arm pivotally mounted above said latch, and being provided with a notch adapted to engage a shoulder on the latch when it is moved out of latching position and to hold it in retracted position; and means adapted upon the closing of the doorto disengage said catch, substantially as dos-"ibed.

A device of the class described comprising a movable latch in the form of a bell crank lever; means with which said latch, engages for holding a door against move ment; and a rotary electric switch having an operative engagement with one arm of said latch for operation thereby when the latch is moved into and out of latching position, substantially as described.
5. A device of the class described com prising a pivotally mounted latch; means with which said latch engages for holding a door against movement; and a rotary electric switch having a pin and groove engagement with said latch for oscillation thereby when the latchis revolved into and out oi? latching position, substantially as described.
6. A device of the class described comprising a latch member mounted in fixed position on a door; a co-operating latch member pivotally mounted in position to engage said first named latch member when the door is closed; and a pivotally mounted electric switch adapted to be turned open by the swinging movement of said pivotally mounted latch out of latching position, substantially as described.
7. A device of the class described comprising a latch member normally held in fixed position on a door; a co-operating latch member pivotally mounted in position to engage said first named latch member when the door is closed; a rotary electric switch having operative engagement with said latch and adapted to be opened and. closed by the movement of the latch out of and into latching position; a catch adapted automatically to hold said latch in retracted position when the door is opened; and means actuated by the closing of the door for releasing the catch from operative engagement with the latch, substantially as describedc 8. A device of the class described com prising a movable latch having an arm; means with which said latch engages for holding a door againstmovemenfi an elec tric switch engaged by said arm and comprising contact brushes in engagement with a curved contact surface whichis turned to opened and closed position by the movement of the'latch out of and'into latching position; and a catch adapted automatically to hold said latch in retracted position when the door is opened, said catch being released by engagement with a said latch engaging means for permitting the latch to move lnto operative position when the door is moved to closing position, substantially as described.
9.
