REENFORCED CEMENT ROOFING.
Application led January 26, 1921.
To aZZ 'whom t may Concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. IVHITESIDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexander, in the parish of Rapides and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reenforced Cement Roofing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in reenforced cement roofing and has for its object to provide a reenforced shingle or roofing that will possess greater strength and durability than any product of this kind now on the market.
In the accompanying drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only and are therefore not drawn to scale Fig. l is a perspective View, illustrating a shingle embodying my improvements.
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section, taken on lineI 2-2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section, taken on line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view o-f the shingle prior to the application of the waterproof coating.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section, taken on line 5*5 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a detail fragmentary sectional view, with the parts represented on an enlarged scale.
Referring to the drawings for a more particula-r description of the invention and in which drawings like parts are designated by like characters throughout. the several views, the numeral l represents the base of the shingle or roofing which is formed of cement or other plastic material. In carry- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, E922.
serial No. 440,000.
ing out my invention, the base lis reenforced by a strip 2 of wire gauze or other reticulated material, which is disposecLbetween'the top and bottom faces of the shingle and extends the entire length and width ofthe base.
The top and bottom faces 3 and 4 of the base 1 as well as the ends and side edges are treated or covered by a waterproof coating 7.
In practice, the side edges and ends 8 and 9, respectively, of the re-inforcing strip 2 may be slightly exposed, as shown more particularly in Figs. 4 to 6, inclusive, to provide a more effectual binding between the base and waterproof coating at these points.
It will be understood that the shingle or roofing may be made of any desired dimensions.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is thought that the construction, operation and advantages 'of this invention will be readily understood without requiring amore extended eX lanation.
aving described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A roofing material comprising a. base of plastic material reenfo-rced by a strip of reticulated material dispose-d between the top and bottom faces of the base and extending the entire length and width thereof with its side and end edges exposed and a waterproof coating enveloping the plastic base.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
JOHN ELKANAH WHITESIDE.
