To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY D. Normans, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Oran e, in the county of Essex and State 015 New J ersey, have invented a new and Im proved Electric Lock, oi which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to electric locks, and aims to provide certain new and useful improvements in connection with a device or this character, and is particularly applicable in connection with the electrical system of an automotive vehicle, although the same may readily be utilized in association with any desired circuit.
It is well appreciated that it has been customary to resort to a conventional key lock switch when it has been desired to open a circuit, and to guard against the closing of the same by unauthorized persons.
Considerable difiiculty has been experienced in connection with this expedient, in view of the fact that a key must necessarily be carried at all times by the authorized person aside from the fact that the lock is liable to become inoperative so that great delay is experienced in closing the circuit.
With this in mind, I have constructed a lock for a circuit which may readily be operated to close the circuit by those persons who are authorized to operate the same and by means of which it will be virtually impossible for an unauthorized operator to succeed in closing the circuit.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a lock of this type which does not necessitate the carrying of a key to permit of its being operated.
Another object of my invention is to provide certain improved construction, as well as av new combination of elements, over prior application for a lock, Serial #309,365 filed July 9, 1919.
Further objects of my invention will appear in the annexed specification and drawings which latter present one practical embodiment of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a lock embodying niy improved construction.

In connection with my prior application and subsequently turning the actuating member (within certain limits) so that unauthorized person would be incapable of reading the proper setting of the parts which would effect an opening of all the valves.
Although, the structure produced in connection with my prior application, has proven of great value in certain adaptations, it has been found that an expert operator is capable of manipulating the actuating element with such delicacy as to be capable of ascertaining when the lost motion ceases, and a coupling between the parts takes place, thus rendering it within he limits of possibility to effect an openoi the lock on the part of an unauthorad person.
Thus this invention contemplates overcoming this defect in that it will be virtupossible for an unauthorized person to a ertain when a coupling of the ele ments is effected.
A. further object of this invention forming the subject matter of this application, to provide a member in the element of lock, so that the circuit inay be opened, and be guarded against unauthorized closing, it being understood, however, that the actual; element illustrated is not necessarily limited for utilization in connection with an electrical circuit.
with the foregoing in mind, reference is had to Figures 1 and 3,'in which the reference numeral 5 indicates the cover of the body or lock, into which lead 6 of the circuit to be locked extend. Rotatably associated with the body of the casing 5 are rods or other suitable elements 7 carrying actuating elements 8 permitting o'f their manual rotation. Also a plurality of dials corresponding in number to the number of rods utilized, are provided upon the upper face ot the casing 5, such dials being indicated by the reference numeral 9, and a pointer or other suitable element 10 is affixed to each of the rods 7, and serves to svitch, capable of cooperating with the indicate the position of the parts to the oporator.
It is to be noted that the rod 7 is continued through the body of the casing 5 in the form of a reduced portion or stem 11, and thc whole is retained in proper position by any suitable means, such as a spring12 co-operating with a washer or flange l3 affixed to each of the stems 11.
Inconnection withthe foregoing, it is to be noted that contrary to my conventional construction, each of the above elements is preferably constructed of insulating mate rial, and itis to be noted that the stems 11 co-operate with the openings formed in the casing 5 for their reception, in such a man: ner as to necessitate the expenditure of a relatively great amount of force to effect a turning of the same for a purpose hereinafter morefully specified. i 7
Referring more particularly to FiguresQ and 3, it will be seen that the leads 6 are continued within the body of: the casing in the form of wires or rods let, having a'plurality of gaps corresponding in number to the number of dials provlded. in each. or these gaps or openings a rotatable switch element 15 is mounted, and the the rod 19 affixed to the inner end of each of the stems 11.
Thus it will be seen, incident to the relatively stilt turning permitted on the part of the rod 7, that it will be impossible for an operator to ascertain that point at which contact is effected between the elements 18 and 19 so that it would be impossible to tamper with the switch in this respect.
Further, by virtue of the disposition of the contact elements 17 at right angles to each other, or, in any other position than diametrically opposite one another, it will be necessary to turn each of the bodies 15 to the correct position, and incident to the thickness of the elements 18 and 19, the rods 7 will have to be turned in that direction for which they were set to effect a closing of the circuit. i
Thus, reference being had to Figure 4;, it will be seen that I have indicated the closing position of the switch, as being identified by the reference character 9, and full and asagna ,dot and dash lines I have indicated the correct position which the parts will assume upon the switch being turned, as has been shown by the arrow indicating a clock-wise turning. Further, upon the parts being turned in an anti-clock wise direction, as has been indicated by the dotted arrow, it will be appreciated that the switch will have its elements moved to the position indicated solely in dotted lines, at which it will be seen that it would be impossible to effect a closingoi? the circuit despite the fact that the pointer 10 was registering with the proper reference character 9. From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a lock adapted to co-operate withaswitch, and by means of which all of the objections of my invention as set forth in the preamble will be accomplished, and it will further be understoodthat numerous modificationsof structure might readily be resorted to without in the least departing from the spirit of my invention, which I claimaszp v a 1.
