Be it known that I, .KARL'HER AN a citizen of the United States, residing at (Jhester, in the county of Delaware, State of Pennsylvania, have invented-certain new and use ful Improvements in Pumps; and Ido here by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and .use the This invention relates to pumps and more particularly to that class used for feeding stea'm boilers, in which event the pump is steam operated or it may be driven with any desired fluid.
It is the object of the invention to. provide a pump that will be verysimple in construction and very efiicient in its operation and in which the motive fluid from the actuating rotor of the pump will join the discharge from the pump to contribute its heat thereto and will furthermore join the discharge in such manner as to augment the action of the impelling member of the pump.

Referring to the drawings,- the .present pump comprises a casing 10 having a single inlet opening 11 at one end and having at its other end, in the construction illustrated, a
' pair of discharge openings 12, of which one may connect with a boiler feed pipe and the other with a pipeline for any purpose, it bein of course understood that any number of discharge outlets may be used.
Within the casing 10 is mounted a fluid V some.

impelling rotor comprising a cylindrical body 13having radiating longitudinal ribs 14 of the gear type and the upper and lower walls of the casing are, curved above and be low this rotor as shown at 15 and 16 respectively and in close relation to which walls the ribs or teeth 14 move. The/rotor 13 is fixed upon a shaft'l7 that is journaled at one end in a side of the casing 10 and at its other end in the outer wall of a chamber-18 that is formed on the plate 19 that is bolted against the opposite side of the casing 10, this chamber 18 being thus formed in what may be termed a supplemental casing.-
The chamber 18 iscylindrical and coaxial to the shaft 17 and within this chamber and fixed upon the shaft 17, is disposed the driving rotor of the pump. The driving rotor comprises a cylindrical body 20 having a circumscribing flange 21 vthat radiates therefrom midway of its length and at opposite sides of this flange are the circumscribing series of ribs or wings 22. and 23 respectively. One face of each rib is in a plane including the axis of the shaft 17 while the other face i rotor will be driven in one direction and if the motive fluid be directed against the corresponding faces of the other, set of ribs and in the same manner, the rotors will be oppositely driven.
To admit amotive fluid, an inlet pipe 25 is engaged with a valve casin 26 to which the pipe leads at one side an from the other side of which casing there lead the feed ducts or passages 27 and 28 that extend to the feed ports 29 and 30 that open through the wall of the chamber 18 in position to delivermotive fluid against the radial faces of the wings 22 and 23 respectively whereby to deliver motive fluid toi either set of ribs.
Within the valve chamber is a turning plug valve 31 having a passage 32 through it that retains communication with the feed pipe 25 -when shifted to register'with the passages- 27 and 28' interchangeably. The valve is provided with a handle 33' for shifting it and thus is provided a simple means for reversely actuating the driving rotor.
From the chamber 18 there leads an exhaust passage 34 in which is connected an exhaust pipe 35 that leads to the casing at the discharge side of the impelling rotor, as and for the purpose tobe presently explained.
It will be understood that with the rotor 13 actuated to move its lower side in Figure 2 in the direction of the discharge end of the casing water that may enter through the inlet opening 11 will be moved in the direction of the outlet end of the casing. To prevent the water from continuing around between the ribs 14 of the impelling rotor, a check wheel 36 is fixed upon a shaft 37 journaled in the sides .of the casing 10 and in position to meshits ribs or teeth 38 with those of the rotor 13, the teeth or ribs 38 moving in close relation to the upper wall of the casing 10 which is curved to conform to the curvature of the path of movement of the outer edges of the teeth or ribs 38.
Leading through the under side of the casinglO is a duct or passage 39 that is forked to provide the branch passages 40 that lead throu h the bottom wall of the casing at points eneath check Wheel 36 and in position to direct flow therefrom to the discharge openin 12 respectively. The discharge pipe 35 or the motive fluid is connected with an elbow 41 with which in turn is connected a pipe 42 leading to a L-connection 43 that is screwed into the passage 39 and thus the motive fluid after actuating the driving rotor, enters the casing 10 at the discharge side of the rotor 13 to join with the fluid impelled thereby and to contribute its heat thereto, the direction of movement of the motive fluid being such as to urge the impelled liquid to the discharge openings 12. The pipe 42 includes a T 44 with which is connected a drain cock 45 through the medium of which the apparatus may be drained, to prevent freezing when not in use.
It will of course be understood that the present pump may be employed in any capacity to which it is adapted and that in the place of steam, the drivingrotor may be operated by compressed air 'or with other motive fluid. It will be further noted that when the pump is used in connection with a boiler or with any reservoir and it is desired to draw off the water this may be done by reversing the direction of operation of the impelling rotor 13, which is accomplished by shifting the valve 31 to correspondingly direct the motive fluid. What is claimed is:
1. A pump comprising a casing, an impelling rotor mounted in the casing, the casing having inlet and outlet openings, a drivin rotor operativel connected with the 6&3 impelling rotor, means or admitting a motive fluid to the drivin rotor, means for discharging the motive uid from the driving rotor to the impelled fluid within the casing, and means actuated by the impelling rotor for preventing retrogression of the impelled fluid.
2. A pump comprising a casing, an impelling rotor mounted in the casing, the casing having inlet and outlet openings, a driving rotor operatively connected with the impelling rotor, means for admitting a motive fluid to the driving rotor, means for discharging the motive fluid from the driving rotor to the impelled fluid within the 0 casing. and in the direction of the outlet, and means located between the impelling rotor and the outlet and actuated by said rotor for preventing retrogression of the impelled uid. as
3. A pump comprising a casing having inlet and outlet openings, an impelling rotor within the casing, a shaft upon which the rotor is fixed, a reversible driving rotor fixed upon the shaft and including two .annular series of oppositely disposed ribs in radiating relation to the shaft, means for directing a motive fluid to the series of ribs interchangeably, means for conveying the motive fluid from the driving rotor and discharging it into the impelling rotor casing in the direction of the outlet of the casing, and a rotatable element driven by the impelling rotor and located between the rotor and the outlet of the casin for preventing the impelled fluid from ein carried upwardly and backwardly by the impelling rotor.
4. A pump comprising a casing having inlet and outlet openings, an impelling rotor within the casing between said openings, a shaft upon which the rotor is fixed, a driving rotor fixed upon the shaft and including a pair of annular series of ribs having faces radiating from the shaft and dis: posed oppositely, means for delivering a motive fluid to the radial faces of the two series of ribs interchangeably, means for conveying motive fluid from the driving rotor into the casing between the rotor and the discharge opening of the casing, and a rotatable 11'5 longtiudinally ribbed check wheel meshing with and driven by the impelling rotor and located between the said rotor and the oulet of the casing for preventing the rotor from cairrying the impelled fluid back toward the in ct.
