Description

L. B. CRAIG.
LUNETTE BRACKET.
APPLlc/JloN FILED Nov. 3. 1920.
Patented July 18, i922'.
LOUIS B. CRAIG, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA.
Specieation of Letters Batent.
Patented July 1S, 1%?2.
(FILED UNDER THE ACT 0F MARCH 3, 1883, 22 STAT. Il., 625.)
To all 1 0/tom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis B. CRAIG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Davenport, county of Scott, State of Iowa, have invented an improvement 1n Lunette Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
The invention described herein may be used by the Government, or any of its oflicers or employees in prosecution of work for the Government, or by any other person in the United States, without payment to me of any royalty thereon.
The subject of this invention is a lunette bracket intended primarily for attachment to the .middle rail of a caisson to hold the lunette, though capable of use on other vehicles. n
The main object of the invention is the provision of a bracket which is simple, durable, and efficient and to which the lunette may be readily attached and from which it may be readily detached.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel arrangement and combination of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit'of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan View of the middle rail of a caisson with abracket constructed in accordance with the invention in place thereon and a lunette attached;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the lunette detached; and
Figure 1- is a side elevation of the bracket.
Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference the forward end of the middle rail of a caisson is designated by the reference numeral 10 and to the end of this rail is secured the lunette bracket 11. t
The bracket is, preferably, formed of metal to provide upper and lower spaced apart plates bridged by a preferably curved portion 11. The plates are aperturedto receive rivets 12 or other suitable fastening units by which the bracket is secured in place on the rail.
Connected to the bridge piece 11 and the upper and lower plates is a web 13 which is disposed centrally of the bracket and eX- tends for a short distance longitudinally thereof. The web may be provided with an aperture 13 ,to permit the passage therethrough of a bolt 14 by means of which legs 15 are pivotally secured to the rail and serve to support the rail when the4 caisson is detached. from the vehicle which it has been trailing.
At the forward end ofthe bracket 11, a dependingV offset 16 is formed which is bored and countersunk at 17 to receive the shank 18 of a lunette 19 through which lunette the rail may be coupled to a vehicle. The end of the shank 18 is threaded as at 20 to receive a nut 21 by which the shank is firmly bound in the offset 16.`
It is believed that the operation of the device will be amply understood from the foregoing description without a separate and detail explanation thereof.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A lunette bracket including upper and lower plates, said plates provided with apertures for the reception of fastening means, a bridge piece vconnecting the forward ends of the plates, a web connected to the bridge piece and the plates and positioned centrally of and extending longitudinally of the bracket, said bridge piece provided with an aperture, an offset depending froin the forward end of the bracket, said offset bored and countersunk, a lunette having a shank formed to fit in the bore of the offset, and means for binding the shank in place in the bore.
2. A lunette bracket, including upper and lower plates, said plates provided with apertures for the reception of fastening means, a brid e piece connecting the forward ends of t e plates, a web connected to the bridge piece and the plates and posi- 'tioned centrally of and extending longitudinally of the bracket, an offset depending from the forward end of the bracket, said offset provided with a longitudinal-borda lunette having a shank formed to fit 1n los center rail of a caisson, anoi'set depending from the forward end of the bracket, said oteet provided with a bore, a lunette having a shank to fit in the bore and means for binding the skank in placa A lunette bracket7 including a part adjustable to the center rail of a caisson, an odset depending from the bracket, said oid set provided with a bere, a lunette having a shank formed to tit the bore and means for binding the Shank in place.
LOUIS B.l CRAIG.
